Days 1–5

Day 1 – Choose eight of the following learning opportunities to do today!

As you work through these activities, please be mindful of your personal health and well-being as well as that of those around you.  Be safe, work with an adult when possible/necessary, and practice social distancing.

Read a fiction story with someone and write what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Find 2 items in your house that you can put side by side and find which one is the longest.

Look outside your window or go for a walk.  What animals do you see?

Describe one plant and one animal and how its parts help it to survive.

Talk with your parents or caregivers and if it’s okay, ask them

  • Why is it important to save money?

Go to the Hawaii State Library online site   and find a fiction book that you like.  Write what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Use Khan Academy, 1st grade math course for 15 - 20 minutes.

Look at some examples of biomimicry with a helper.

Draw a model of one of the animals or plants you read about.  

Describe how that plant or animal inspired engineers to create a design.

How should we treat others?  

Watch a video What Makes A Good Friend?  and make a poster  showing ways people should treat others.

Act out what happened at different parts of the story.  Pretend you are the main character, act out one thing that happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story.  

Use paper shapes to create a picture. Write down how many of each shape you used.

Design and create a device or object that is inspired by the parts of an animal or plant that help it survive.

For example, some seeds have sticky hooks that let them hitch a ride on animals.  You could design an item that uses hooks to stick.

Keep a journal and write one thing that happened during the day.  Include the following:

  • What happened?
  • How did you feel?
  • Would you do it again?
  • Why or why not?

Write your numbers from 1-120. If you think you can write numbers higher than 120, see how high you can go.

Find the moon!

Observe and sketch the location of the moon in the sky every hour throughout the day.  Do this every day for a week and look for patterns.

What questions do you have about how the moon moves?

Play a board game with friends or family. After the game, talk about why taking turns is important.

Use an online tool to record one thing that happened.  Include the following:

  • Would you do it again?

Create a  simple book of what happened.  Draw a picture and write a sentence on what happened at the beginning, middle and end.

Choose a board game or card game to play with your family member or caregiver.

Stand in a sunny spot until you cast a shadow on the ground or wall.  Mark your shadow (with pencil, chalk, or tape) every hour throughout the day.  

What happens to your shadow during the day?  Why do you think this is?

Have someone read to you about Marie Curie.  Name three reasons why she is still remembered today.

Read a non-fiction book and write down interesting facts about the topic you are reading.  

Share what you learned with someone.

Compare the numbers 19 and 91.

Stretch a piece of cling wrap over a cup or bowl and sprinkle some salt on top of the cling wrap.  Point different sources of sounds like your voice, a speaker, or an instrument at the cup or bowl.

Design an investigation to use sound to make the salt move.

Natural resources are things found in nature that we use in our everyday lives, like water, soil, plants and minerals.

Using things around your home, create the subject you read about and see if you can use the book to help you.

Create a poster, a model or anything else to show what you learned.

Use materials that you have at home to build a device that can send a message using sound.

Create a secret coded message for a partner to figure out.

Learn about: The Wright Brothers!  After watching the video, think of two questions you would like to ask.

Make a card for someone.  

Write a special message to them to make them feel happy.  

Choose 4 numbers from 0-100.

Write the number down and show how to make that number as many ways as you can.

Use a flashlight to explore how light goes through different objects.  Find things that light can go all the way through, a little bit through, and not at all through.

What do you think causes light to go through different objects differently?

Create a map of your neighborhood on blank paper. Be sure to label your map.

Create a “How to” book and write down the steps in order on how to do something (e.g., make a peanut butter sandwich, brush your teeth, feed a pet).

Count to 120 (or higher if you can)! Also, try counting by 10s and see how high you can go.

Think of a baby animal and its parents.

Draw or write some of the ways that the baby is like its parents and some of the ways that it is different from its parents.

Jobs are an important part of communities.

Talk with a family member about the different kinds of jobs in your community.
