What does being a Catholic mean?

What is the Eucharist?

This is the sacrament of  Holy Communion, the body (bread) and blood (wine) of Christ

Why the Eucharist is important?

  • It is when we receive the body and blood of Christ.
  • It is a way to remember the last supper and the sacrifice that Jesus made for us.
  • Catholics believe that when the priest blesses the bread and wine it actually becomes Jesus. This is called ‘transubstantiation’

What does Apostolic mean?

Something that relates to Jesus Christ's apostles or their teachings.

The Church is Apostolic because it continues on from Jesus’ first apostles (disciples)

Name key features inside a church and explain their importance

  • Altar - It is very important because the sacrifices of Jesus (The body and blood) will be placed on the altar and given special prayers and blessings.
  • The stained glass windows- These often tell a story from the Bible and remind worshippers of Bible teachings.
  • Font- it is symbolic of welcoming new life into both the church community and Gods family.
  • Tabernacle -It is a small cupboard or box which is important because it holds Eucharist outside of the mass.

Why is it important for Christians to attend Church?

  • To receive the Eucharist
  • To hear the word of God through the Gospel and readings
  • To show their dedication to God by giving up their time to pray with other members of the community

How the Bible can guide Christians?

  • The word of God: if Christians follow the Bible they will be fulfilling the word of God.
  • Stories about Jesus: Jesus was an example of how to live a good moral life. He did things such as helping the poor, this can guide Christians to do the same.
  • Includes Jesus teachings (guidance): Jesus provided us with many teachings in the Bible such as ‘Do to others as you would have them do to you’ (Luke). These teachings provide a moral guidance for Christians.

How can Catholics show their faith?

  • By following Jesus example shown in the Gospels
  • By praying the Our Father and Hail Mary
  • By going to mass and having the Eucharist

Where does everything come from?

What does it mean to say the world was created Ex-Nihilo?

Creation out of nothing. God creating the world out of nothing through his omnipotence.

What scientific theory explain the creation of the universe?

The big bang theory: before space and time existed all matter was squashed together into a tiny point as small as a speck of dust. This speck is known as a singularity. The singularity exploded and the energy that caused it also caused the universe to expand outwards.

According to Scientific research this is how the universe came into existence.

What is the theory of evolution?

A man called Charles Darwin created the theory. Evolution is the slow, continual change of organisms over a very long time. He studied fossils and found that they had they had become more suited to their environment as they had adapted to it. This is known as the theory of evolution.

What do different Christians believe about the creation of the world?

Evangelical Christians: Take the Bible literally and believe that creation happened as is stated in the Bible. They think this because the Bible is considered to be the word of God therefore it must be the truth.

Roman Catholic Christians: Do not take the Bible literally; instead believe that Religion and Science can complement each other. They believe the story of Genesis does not hold factual truths but, mythical truths instead. It teaches us about God and his characteristics such as his omnipotence.
