Welcome to Brattleboro Union High School. You are part of a school community that is dedicated to helping all students reach their full potential. Our programs are designed to help every student become college and career ready. From math and science to the arts, we have comprehensive programs that will challenge you, educate you and prepare you for life after you graduate from BUHS. In addition to exemplary academics, we also offer a wide range of athletic and extracurricular opportunities that will enhance your experiences here at BUHS.

One of our greatest strengths as a school is family involvement. BUHS has a long history of family and community support and we continually seek out parent involvement and input at both the student and school level. We are looking forward to your involvement this year as we continue to foster a safe, healthy and dynamic school environment.

The BUHS community identified four core values that we use to define our goals and to shape our community. The BUHS Community has adopted the following five Transferable Skills. These skills are embedded in course content and will be assessed on a regular basis. Students will track their own progress in completing Transferable Skills using their Personal Learning Plans. The class of 2020 will have to successfully achieve and document in each of the Transferable Skills in order to graduate. Personalized Learning Plans (PLPs) help students achieve academic success, be prepared for post-secondary opportunities, and engage actively in civic life. Students will work with adults in the building to identify their goals, learning styles, and abilities, and align this with the BUHS academic expectations and graduation requirements, as well as post-secondary goals. Students will use their PLP to document extracurricular activities as well as academic proficiency, and the PLP can be used to support resume development as well as the college application process. At least once a year, students will reflect on the progress they have made on their PLP. Parents and guardians will partner with teachers and other adults at BUHS to support student success.


Brattleboro Union High School believes that assessments such as tests, quizzes and projects should be the basis for a productive conversation between students, teachers and parents. To support this belief Brattleboro Union High School is transitioning to a proficiency based evaluation system. This allows students to receive a more complete report on how well they are meeting the BUHS Transferable Skills and various BUHS Content Standards. While we do still award credit for courses and academic grades, our proficiency based system will allow teachers to evaluate progress more effectively and will provide more comprehensive progress reports to students.

As part of a proficiency based system, academic grades will also be reported separately from Habits of Work such as participation, attendance, collaboration and behavior will be assessed and reported to students on a biweekly basis. Students are expected to maintain a Habits of Work average of no less than 2.5 in order to be eligible for co-curricular activities. This is in addition to the academic requirements for co-curricular participation.

Administrator Assignments

Brattleboro Union High School is divided into grade level administration to provide personal and efficient delivery of services to students and their parents/guardians.  Each student is assigned to one administrator for the duration of his or her high school program.

Students and parents are encouraged to work closely with their Administrative Office in order to enjoy academic success and personal growth.  Please call the Administrative Office with any concerns.  


Absence from School – Attendance is taken in every class, including advisory and ACE. If a student is going to be absent or late to school, a parent/guardian should call Andrea Goggin (451-3419) before 8:30 a.m. to report this information. An automated phone call will go out to parents/guardians by late morning for students who are not marked absent and have not attended Block 1 and/or 2. If contact is not made, a note to the Attendance Office is required when the student returns to school. If we have not received verification of the student’s absence after 24 hours, the student is deemed truant and a truancy letter is sent. Please be advised that both safety concerns and Vermont law on compulsory attendance require that we refer the names of students unaccounted for to the truant officer.  

Late Arrival – The school day begins at 8:45 am.  Students who arrive late should report to the Attendance Office to sign in. Late arrivals or early departures may be excused by parents up to six times a semester, with either a phone call or a note. Late arrivals or early departures beyond those limits will not be excused without medical or other official documentation of the reason. Late arrivals must have official documentation on the same day if a student plans to participate in any BUHS extracurricular activity.

Signing out/leaving during the school day – Students may leave during the school day if:

When students do leave the school with permission, they are expected to depart from the school grounds immediately. Upon returning to school, students must sign back in at the Attendance Office or show their card to the receptionist at the desk and then proceed immediately to their class.  

PLEASE NOTE: BUHS and WRCC students are not permitted to leave school for fire calls. A student’s first responsibility is school.

BUHS Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend and participate in every class in which they are enrolled at Brattleboro Union High School. Further, the BUHS faculty and administration believe it is the individual student’s responsibility to get to classes on time. Absenteeism and tardiness of a few students can impact instruction to all the students that do attend a given class and do arrive on time. Teachers and administration are committed to providing essential basic education, as well as the most varied and challenging courses they can offer. BUHS also offers a wide variety of student activities, and students may need to make choices about participating in these activities. We believe that students who miss class cannot expect to achieve at the same level as if they were present, particularly in classes which incorporate daily participation into the course grade.

Students may lose the option for a numerical passing grade for a course if they are absent for more than 10 classes in a semester course that meets every day, or for five (5) classes in a semester course that meets every other day. Students may lose the option for a numerical passing grade for a full year course if they are absent for more than 20 classes. In the event that the student passes the course after exceeding 10 absences, their course grade is recorded as an S and a grade of 60% is used for the purposes of GPA calculation.  School sponsored activities are not included in the total.

In order to earn a numerical passing grade after exceeding 10 absences, a student must provide documentation from a health care provider, court clerk, etc. for the additional absences, and must make up the written work.  “Participation” grades for missed classes, however, are nearly impossible to make up and this should be a topic of conversation between a student who really must miss some classes and the teacher of the missed classes.  Written work must be made up according to a schedule agreed to by the student and the teacher, with 2 days per missed class as a general guide to this process.

When students take responsibility for making up work they miss during an absence, teachers will help them depending on the teacher’s availability and the guidelines and limits in each course syllabus and/or published course requirements.

The school will notify parents/guardians when a student has reached 7 non-school sponsored absences in a class.

Definitions and Understandings

“Tardiness” means entering the classroom after passing time is over.

“Absence” means missing more than half of the scheduled time of any class for any reason other than school sponsored activities.

“School-sponsored” activities include such things as school trips, school athletic contests, school activity trips, documented college visitations, school music auditions and festivals, restorative justice meetings, required testing, student council events, and other special events advocated or required by approved school activities.

Other “Excused Absences” would include documented illnesses, a death or other tragic family event, a medical appointment, court appearance, or those days associated with a religious holiday not recognized by the school calendar.

Even in cases of excused absences, “participation” aspects of a course may eventually affect the grade earned and awarded.

Absences considered as “unexcused” would include such things as sleeping late, family vacations, private or non-school concerts/performances, non-school sponsored athletics, shopping trips, preparing for other school sponsored activities, and undocumented and repeated illnesses.

Suspensions are neither excused nor unexcused.

Absences based upon a request to participate in a family vacation are strongly discouraged and should not be contemplated unless other absences are at a minimum or unless teachers agree that there is an excellent chance that work will be made up successfully. Students must talk with their teachers to get an understanding of the coursework they will miss before their departure. It must also be understood by students and parents that teachers will not be expected to provide advance work assignments to students who will be missing classes if that work is not yet available for students who will be in attendance.

After school participation on days students are absent – Students who participate in extracurricular activities are expected to attend school, go to class and do well academically. If a student does not, then they will jeopardize their ability to participate. Students must be present for the entire school day, or have a documented absence for a scheduled appointment, in order to participate in any school sponsored activity scheduled that same afternoon or evening. If a student cuts a class on a Friday, they may not participate in any school sponsored activity on a Saturday. If they have an excused absence on a Friday, they may participate in a school sponsored activity on a Saturday.

Decision on how to make-up work/certification of make-up work – It is school policy that students are allowed to make up work for the reasons outlined and according to stipulations listed above. The process, schedule, grading, and certification that the work has been made up will rest exclusively with the teacher.

Class Cuts – A class cut is when a student misses more than half a class without an acceptable excuse. Each class cut will result in:

Students dropped from courses due to excessive unexcused absences may have their schedules changed and be required to leave school after their last class or when they have no scheduled class. Transportation in such cases is the responsibility of the student and family.

Attendance and cuts in Windham Regional Career Center courses will be dealt with by WRCC staff and administration in accordance with WRCC policies and procedures.

Truancy – We want all students in school and receiving an education as required by Vermont Law on compulsory attendance. When a child (ages 6-16) is enrolled in school and fails to attend without sufficient reason, that child will be considered truant under Vermont law for compulsory attendance. Part of that responsibility is to follow up by phone calls, letters, and meetings when students are absent and, if truant, to follow the state truancy laws.

Obtaining assignments when absent – Students who miss school are encouraged to utilize their Chromebooks for contacting teachers for assignments. Assignments also may be obtained for students who are absent due to illness by calling the main office (451-3405).  If requested early, assignments may be ready to pick up by the end of the day but 24 hours is usually necessary so that teachers can be contacted and given adequate time to respond. It is also possible to contact teachers during their office hours or via voicemail and email.


A complete description of courses, programs and graduation requirements can be found in the Program of Studies. Students and parents are urged to consider the numerous possibilities carefully and plan ahead. Help is available from, school counselors, teachers, department heads, and administrators.

Advisory – All students are assigned to a student advisory group.  In most cases, students will remain in the same advisory for the duration of their years at BUHS. The purpose of the advisory period is to provide students with support through regular contact with a staff member and a small group that remains constant and makes the institution feel smaller and more manageable for some students. Advisories are also used for weekly student check-ins and other activities including ACE scheduling, discussions and course selection/registration. All students are required to attend the advisory period and remain there. 

ACE Period – On Tuesdays through Fridays, students can ask a teacher to be “called back” to get extra help, work on a project, finish a test or quiz, etc.  Teachers can also “call back” students.  ACE period is in place to allow for more time within the school day for students to get help with or work on their academics. If students do not attend a scheduled ACE period, it will be treated as a class cut. It is the expectation that the students are proactive in scheduling ACE time with their teachers.

Student Schedules and Enrollment – Students in grades 9-11 must be enrolled in 14 credits per semester and have classes in all four blocks. Grade 12 students must be enrolled in 10 credits per semester and have classes in at least three blocks. Students in grades 9, 10 and 11 must be fully enrolled. Seniors should be enrolled in sufficient classes to meet graduation requirements. A conference with the student, parental approval and approval by an administrator is required if a student is to be less than fully enrolled. All requests for schedule changes must be made prior to the start of the semester.  No changes will be made after that date except to correct a scheduling error.

Class Drops – Administrative approval is required to drop a class. Requests to drop due to illness, extenuating personal or family circumstances should be brought first to the attention of a counselor who will arrange a meeting with the Principal. A written statement from the parent and supporting documentation will be required. If a student has a passing grade at the time of the drop, the withdrawal mark will be a WP (withdraw pass). If the student has a failing grade, or is removed from the class for disciplinary reasons, the course grade will be a WF (withdraw fail). When students are enrolled in courses through another institution, such as Virtual High School or a community college, that institution's add/drop and withdrawal policy may conflict with that of BUHS. Students will still be required to document their reasons for dropping these courses but the providing institutions’ withdrawal policies for assigning grades and credit will be followed.


Course Syllabus – All teachers provide students with a course syllabus at the beginning of the course. The syllabus contains important information about the teacher’s grading procedures, redo and retake procedures, consequences for late assignments, and deadlines for making up work and how to contact the teacher.

Proficiency Based Grading- BUHS is in the process of transitioning to a proficiency based grading system. For this school year we will continue to use course credits and a 0-100 grade scale on progress reports, report cards, and transcripts. In addition, we also use common assessment tools (such as rubrics) and habits of work rubrics to ensure that students are meeting the transferable skills. in order for students to be awarded credit for class they must achieve a min grade of 60 and score proficient or higher on designated performance indicators in each of their classes. Course syllabi will indicate which performance indicators are required.

Grading Marking period, exam and final course grades are numerical (0-100) except as noted below. A grade of 60 or above is considered passing. The final course grade may not be the absolute numerical average of all grades. Grading criteria will be set forth in the syllabus of each course. If students and parents have questions or concerns about grades, we ask that you first speak with the teacher and/or the Department Head who can assist in resolving any dispute. Their decision can then be appealed to your administrator.

Final Exams – There is a final exam period at the end of each semester. The final exam may account for up to 20% of the course grade. We expect students to attend the scheduled exam. If this is not possible due to illness or family emergency, a written excuse is required and the student must make arrangements with the teacher to make up the exam. If a scheduled exam conflicts with some other planned activity, the parent must obtain prior approval from the school administration for a student to make up the exam after the regular exam period. We do not allow early administration of exams unless a student is leaving the area permanently or for an extended period of time.

Pass/Fail – BUHS courses are graded on a numerical (1-100) grading scale except in a few circumstances. Grades for all credit earned through an independent study are on a Pass/Fail basis. For independent studies and independent study courses, “High Pass” may be used to reflect outstanding achievement. For elective courses beyond those needed to satisfy specific departmental graduation requirements, students may select to be graded on a pass/fail basis during the first five weeks of the semester. A student may elect the pass/fail option only once in a semester. Pass/fail grades appear on the transcript but are not reflected in the cumulative grade point average. If a student’s grade is “Pass” or “High Pass” it will appear on the student’s transcript and credit will be given for the course, but it will not have an impact on the student’s grade point average or rank. If the grade is a “Failure” it will appear on the transcript, but will not have an impact on the student’s grade point average or rank.

Academic Honesty – Brattleboro Union High School does not tolerate cheating in any form as this is in conflict with our core values. Examples of cheating include, but are not limited to, copying another student’s work, copying other sources without appropriate attribution and using notes or other unauthorized materials during a test. Any use of electronic devices to capture or share assessment information is also considered academic dishonesty. Consequences for academic dishonesty may result in a zero on the assignment, activity or the unit of study. The teacher makes the initial decision regarding the consequences for cheating. The student may appeal that decision first to the Department Head and subsequently to an Assistant Principal. The penalties may result in the student’s failing the course.

Academic Recognition

Honor Roll – Students are eligible for the honor roll only if they are fully enrolled, have no incomplete grades at the end of the marking period and are passing any courses being graded on a Pass/Fail basis.  For High Honors a student must attain a 90 or above in all courses.  For Honors, a student must attain 80 or above in all courses.

Lamp of Knowledge Pins - High Honors in at least two marking periods during the current academic school year.

Senior School Letters - GPA of 85% and a minimum of 100 credits earned by the end of their seventh semester at BUHS.

Graduating with Honors – GPA at the end of quarter 3 senior year is an 85% or above and fully enrolled at BUHS for 7 semesters.

Incomplete Grades - In cases of illness or other extenuating circumstances, a student may be allowed additional time to make up assignments or tests beyond the end of a marking period. For any extension of more than two weeks (10 school days) beyond the end of the marking period, a written completion plan approved by the teacher must be submitted to the student’s administrator. If no plan is submitted, the registrar will change any incomplete grade to 55 (F if pass/fail) after two weeks. It is the responsibility of the student to request an extension, agree on a completion date with the teacher, and complete the necessary coursework by that date.

Progress and Grade Reports – Report cards are issued to parents/guardians two times each semester.  In addition, parents/guardians will receive a progress report about half way through each marking period.  If any of these reports raise concerns, please contact your student’s teacher. Parents and students may also view current grades and attendance by accessing the Parent Portal, which is available through the BUHS website. Parental login information is sent home at the start of the school year for outlying students. Students may log into the Parent Portal using their existing BUHS account information. If there is any difficulty in logging in, please contact the counseling office.

Repetition of Courses – Credit can be granted for a course only once. A course may be repeated for improvement. Credit will be given for the course with the higher grade. The course with the higher grade will be included in GPA calculation. Both courses will be listed on the student’s transcript. A course grade may be replaced by a grade earned for the same BUHS course.  The following exceptions may be approved by a department head:

In all cases where a student is taking a course over and planning to replace the grade of a previous course, a Grade Replacement Form must be filled out with the assistance of the student’s counselor. The grade for a BUHS course may not be replaced by a course taken at another institution.

Transfer Credit – Only credit earned at accredited institutions will be accepted and counted towards graduation. When a student transfers to BUHS, the students’ transcript is evaluated to determine which graduation requirements have been completed.

Graduation – It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of their progress towards fulfillment of graduation requirements, which are outlined clearly in the Program of Studies. Additionally, in order for students to receive a diploma, they must have a debt-free record in school.  

Early Graduation – A student wishing to apply for early graduation should see their counselor and complete a request form. A statement of the student's reasons and parental support is required. This should be completed by the end of the first marking period for graduation in January (3 ½ years) and the end of the first semester for graduation in June (3 years). For all students, but especially for those planning to attend college, we recommend going beyond minimum graduation requirements.  

Keyboarding – Proficiency in keyboarding is a graduation requirement. Students must be able to type 30 words per minute with no errors and without looking at the keyboard. This requirement can be met in any of three ways:

Community Service – BUHS believes that community service is a worthwhile and rewarding experience for high school students and is a clear commitment to our core value of community. We have, therefore, a graduation requirement of 40 HOURS of community service, a commitment that may be spread over four years. You can volunteer for a non-profit organization or a worthy individual. A non-profit organization is not a business but is an agency which serves the needs of a group of people or the community. A worthy individual can be a senior citizen who needs specific assistance, or a person with serious illness or disability. Service hours must be documented on the BUHS Community Service Form, available in your administrative office. Work done during the summer should be filed by September 30th. Work done during the school year should be filed by June 1st.  Community Service forms should be returned to your administrative office. Information detailing more specific guidelines and volunteer opportunities can be found on the Community Service Bulletin Board by the main entrance to the high school or at buhs.wsesu.org/community-service. College Courses /Courses Taken Outside of BUHS – We encourage students to pursue their interests and to seek enrichment and academic challenges. Students must apply to have a course accepted for BUHS credit. An outside course may not be used to fulfill a specific subject area requirement. Prior approval is strongly recommended and required if the student wishes a course to count towards full enrollment. Institutions that grant credit must have appropriate education accreditation. Forms are available in the counseling office.

Course Extension – On-line or summer school course work may be taken as an extension of a failed BUHS course. A student must earn a final grade of at least 45 to be eligible for this option. Other possibilities (retaking the course, community college courses, etc.) should also be explored. The appropriate Department Head must approve the proposed extension. The course grade is determined by the following formula: original BUHS course=60%; extension course=40%.

Community Based Learning Program – This program is designed to provide students with real world learning opportunities to earn high school credit towards graduation. Students work closely with the program coordinator to develop an individual learning plan that includes a selective community learning site, designing and completing an academic portfolio, and meeting daily with a mentor and/or the program coordinator. Dual Credit Courses – Windham Regional Collegiate High School offers opportunities for students to take courses for BUHS and college credit.  For a complete listing of offerings see the Program of Studies.


Independent Study – Independent Study is an option for students to learn something not offered in the regular curriculum. Students are graded on a pass/fail basis. Interested students may obtain the complete guidelines on the BUHS website. Proposals for the first semester must be submitted by June 1st and for the second semester by the last day before the December holiday vacation.    

Co-enrollment for High School Completion – Since 2007 Vermont High Schools have been required to provide alternative pathways to high school graduation, and in May 2009 provisions were put in place for students to be co-enrolled at BUHS and Vermont Adult Learning. Vermont Adult Learning is not a BUHS institution and has separate criteria and policies. Students accepted into this program prepare an individual graduation plan with Vermont Adult Learning representatives and then negotiate their plan with the Principal. This program is intended for motivated, independent students. Students interested in co-enrollment options should speak with their school counselor.

Job Corps – BUHS and the Job Corps work together to allow students to complete Job Corps training and still earn a BUHS diploma. Interested students should discuss this option with their school counselor.

Virtual High School – This is an option for a highly motivated, self-disciplined student. There are over 250 online courses to take for elective credit. Applications may be obtained in the counseling office.

Windham Regional Career Center – We encourage our students to take advantage of career center programs. Certain courses will satisfy a core graduation requirement. For further details, please consult the Program of Studies or call the Career Center.

STEM Academy/Visual & Performing Arts Academy/International Studies Academy – policies pertaining to the STEM Academy, VPA Academy and ISA are found in detail in the Program of Studies.

Educational Support Systems

We are committed to the successful education of every student.  In order to maximize each student’s success we provide a range of learning opportunities in a variety of settings.  Students who have documented learning challenges may qualify for services through Special Education or be protected under Section 504, but assistance is available for all students.  Examples of supports include:

Educational Support Team – BUHS has an Educational Support Team consisting of a cross section of 5-7 high school staff, most likely your student’s current teachers. This team meets to develop school-based systems for students’ academic and social success. A parent or student may make a referral for this support service by contacting the Counseling Department, your student’s administrator, or a classroom teacher. Teachers and counselors also make referrals.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act – In compliance with Section 504, BUHS offers all students who have a documented disability, equal access to education and all related activities offered at the school. Information can be obtained from the student’s counselor.

Academic Support Services – Direct instruction for the acquisition of academic skills is available through the Academic Support Program. There are detailed criteria that must be met in order to qualify. Students should speak with their counselor for more details.

Special Education Services – BUHS has a comprehensive Special Education department for identified students. Please see you child’s case manager or counselor for more details.



The activities offered outside the classroom are an enriching part of any student’s education. At BUHS there are many co-curricular options, from a host of theater and drama productions, to international trips, numerous clubs, and some sixty interscholastic and intramural athletic teams. Since these activities are voluntary and a privilege, and because those participating represent Brattleboro Union High School, we require that participants strive to meet the highest standards possible as outlined in our core values. Co-curricular participants will be required to read, sign, and adhere to the Code of Conduct. The privilege of co-curricular participation may be limited or withdrawn as a disciplinary consequence. Any exceptions to written administrative policies will reside exclusively with the principal.

Eligibility – Academic eligibility for co-curricular activities (athletic and non-athletic) is posted on the BUHS website.

Concussions – There are a number of new facts and laws concerning student concussions. Students will not be allowed to participate in co-curricular athletic activities until the student and parent have read and signed the BUHS concussion education form. Please reference the full BUHS concussion policy on the BUHS website.


Absence due to co-curricular and other school related activities –There are a number of activities (athletic competitions, field trips, music events, assemblies, etc.) for which students may be excused from class. It is the responsibility of students and their parents to set priorities and limit the amount of absences from class. This provides an opportunity for both the student and teacher to discuss assignments and what the student will miss. Students who elect to participate in an activity are responsible for meeting all deadlines and keeping up with class work. Students are not allowed to miss classes that they are failing in order to participate in co-curricular contests, field trips or other events.


Cafeteria – Breakfast and/or hot lunch is available for those students who wish to purchase them. Food may also be purchased from the vending machines that are located in the cafeteria area. Eligible students may apply for the free and reduced lunch program through the Principal’s Office.  

Library – The library is open for student use from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 3:30 on Friday. The library is a place for serious study, research, pleasure reading, and quiet discussion. Students are responsible for any library materials they use. Books and materials that are overdue more than six months must be paid for before the student can resume borrowing. Students who visit the library during an academic class or study hall must have a pass from a teacher and must sign in at the front desk.  

Special Education Services – BUHS offers a comprehensive array of services and accommodations to support each student who is eligible under Vermont regulations to a free and appropriate education as outlined in Special Education law. It is the strong commitment of the Special Education teachers to involve parents and/or guardians in the design and implementation of an individual education plan that meets the student’s needs and is crafted for educational success at the high school. English for Speakers of Other Languages – BUHS has an extensive program to serve its ESOL population. If you think that this service may be relevant to your child’s needs, do not hesitate to contact the school counselor or your administrator. All students are screened for English language proficiency in order to determine who might need this service.

Counseling Services – The counseling department provides numerous services to help students be successful academically and personally. Counselors provide assistance in academic planning, course selection, and decisions regarding continuing education and career direction. They also help students deal with adolescent issues and problem solving, connecting them with community services where needed and appropriate. Counselors serve as a resource, not only to students, but also parents, teachers, and other professionals.

Health Services – Health services provided by the professional school nurses include health assessment, health counseling, the storage and administration of prescription medication in the school, coordination with community agencies and medical care facilities, emergency care, health instruction, and assistance to students with special needs and chronic health problems.


Our school community has chosen four core values: Respect, Relevance, Responsibility and Community. These core values guide our actions in how we treat ourselves, others and the school. These core values are important because they are agreed upon and shared by all members of the BUHS community. All rules and behavioral expectations are based on these core values.

Harassment, Hazing and Bullying: Harassment, hazing and bullying are prohibited by state law and will not be tolerated at BUHS.  

Students who experience harassment, hazing or bullying that affects our school community are encouraged to report it to any adult member of the staff or directly to the Principal or an Assistant Principal. It is mandatory for school personnel to report anything they witness or to pass on any report they receive to the administration. Any retaliation against a victim who reports harassment, hazing or bullying will be considered very serious and dealt with accordingly. All reports of harassment, hazing and bullying are investigated.  

Suspension from School 

Suspension from school is governed by BUHS Board Policies F1 and F1A.  Copies may be obtained from the Administrative Office. Generally stated, a student may be suspended from school for up to ten (10) school days for violation(s) of school rules. Prior to a suspension, the student and their parent/guardian shall be given the opportunity for an informal hearing with an administrator or his/her designee. The student and their parent/guardian will be given notice of the charges, an explanation of the charges against the student, and an opportunity for the student to tell their version of the events.  The parent/guardian will receive a decision in writing. A student may be suspended for more than ten (10) days. Long term suspensions (more than 10 days) must be preceded by a written notice and include formal due process procedures including the right to a hearing before the School Board. It is the policy of the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union to ensure that students with disabilities are provided any additional procedural and substantive protections afforded to students with disabilities by Federal and State law.

A student suspended from school is prohibited from entering school grounds during the period of suspension. Students who violate this rule may be subject to further action up to and including trespass charges.

The following actions are considered to be severe in nature with a consequence of suspension or further disciplinary action up to and including expulsion:

Some consequences for the above actions are set by board policy.  The circumstances and severity of a particular incident, as well as the disciplinary record of the student(s) involved, will be taken into consideration in determining consequences.  

Alternatives to suspension: We recognize that suspension out of school does not always address the underlying causes of problem behavior and that it can have a negative impact on a student’s education. When administrators deem it appropriate, the following may be used in lieu of suspension out of school or to reduce lengthy suspensions.

  1. Restorative School Day: A quiet, closely supervised room. Teachers send assignments and the RSD supervisor oversees their completion. Due to limited capacity, this option is generally reserved for younger students.  Students may only be assigned to RSD three days each semester. For incidents that occur after the student has served three days of RSD, out of school suspension will be the consequence and a parent meeting may be required.  
  2. Conflict Resolution and Restorative Justice: Counselors and other BUHS staff often work with students to resolve conflicts before a violent incident occurs or, afterwards, to defuse hostility. The benefit to the offender is a reduction in the length of suspension and an opportunity to address any personal issues that contributed to the behavior. The benefit to the victim is an opportunity to bring closure to the incident and reduce the likelihood of further incidents.  
  3. Student-led Restorative Panel: Students may be offered the option of going before a panel of trained peers to resolve a conflict or make amends for an offense against a fellow student, teacher or other community member.

Below are some possible consequences for a first infraction.  Repeated infractions will have more serious consequences. School administrators may place students on individual progressive discipline plans if they feel it is warranted by the student’s actions.

Detentions - Students may be assigned after school detention for infractions of school rules. Parents will be notified by mail and bus students will be given a 24-hour notice prior to serving their detention. One postponement of the date of detention may be granted at the request of a parent. A detention may not be changed to accommodate extracurricular obligations (sports, concerts, etc.). If a student misses an office detention, there will be additional consequences assigned. Office detentions are held each school day from 3:30 p.m. until 4:05 p.m. The location is posted outside Attendance Office.  

Individual Behavior Plans – Occasionally a student has committed multiple disciplinary infractions over the course of a semester or longer, consequences have been consistently applied, appropriate interventions have been tried and the student’s behavior constitutes a significant disruption to the operation of the school. When this is the case, the student and parent are given notice that further discipline infractions will result in progressively greater consequences including referral to the School Board.

Hallways – Students in the hallways during class time create a disruption of the educational process. For this reason, students may not gather in the hallways during class times except to carry on legitimate school-related activities. Aside from passing times, students who are in the hallway should have a pass from a teacher or staff member. Students found in the halls without passes will be returned to their scheduled class or study hall or taken to their administrator for the remainder of the block or period.

Leaving Grounds – Students do not, in general, have permission to leave the school building except to participate in a supervised educational activity or get to the next class or activity in their schedules (by an approved route). Students who leave the building without permission shall be deemed “off grounds” and subject to consequences for that offense. Students who leave grounds without permission will be assigned a minimum of one office detention. Any classes missed as a result of leaving will be class cuts. Repeated or chronic violations may result in suspension and a parent meeting will be required to review the student's educational program.    

Off campus conduct – State law provides that a student can be disciplined for misconduct that occurs off school grounds if the misconduct directly harms the welfare of the school or interferes with the educational process. Such misconduct includes but is not limited to:

Playing cards and games – Students may play cards and games during unscheduled time but gambling is not allowed. No cards or games are allowed in study hall.


Bake Sales  Only officially recognized student groups may hold bake sales on school grounds or at school-sponsored events. All bake sale offerings shall be compliant with district nutritional policies. No candy or soda may be sold at a bake sale during school hours. Students may not be excused from a class to work a bake sale. They may work during lunch, study halls or free periods only. An application must be filled out by a student representative, signed by the advisor and approved prior to the date of the sale. Applications may be obtained in the Principal’s office.

Building Hours – The building is open at 8:00 am on days when school is in session.  The administrative and counseling offices close at 4:00 p.m. Students who do not have any after school activity should plan to leave campus by 3:45. Students may only be in the building after classes are dismissed to use the library, see a teacher or participate in a supervised school activity. If that activity does not begin by 3:45 p.m., students should leave the building and return for their activity.  

Bus Regulations – Bus transportation is provided for all students who reside outside of a two mile radius from school.  School rules and policies for behavior apply to all students riding the bus.  In addition, there are specific bus regulations which students must follow:

  1. Obey the driver promptly and respectfully.  The bus driver is in complete charge of the bus and the pupils and shall have the same authority in maintaining discipline as a teacher in the classroom.  
  2. Arrive on time at the designated bus stop.
  3. Wait in a safe place, clear of traffic and at least 10 feet away from the bus until it stops.  Walk quickly to, from, and in front of the bus.
  4. When boarding the bus, go to the first available seat or to your assigned seat.
  5. Walk 10 paces in front of the bus before crossing.  Stop and cross at the driver’s signal (thumbs up).
  6. Do not cross behind the bus or walk along the sides of the bus.  Wait for the bus to drive away before attempting to retrieve objects that fall underneath the bus.
  7. Keep the aisles clear.  Students may bring items on the bus only if the items can be carried on the students’ laps.  Skis, animals, or other dangerous objects are prohibited.  Skates must have adequate blade guards in place.
  8. Backpacks must be worn or carried in front while entering or exiting the bus.
  9. Remain seated while the bus is in motion.  Keep all parts of your body inside the bus.
  10. Use the rear door only in the case of an emergency.
  11. Do not eat or drink on the bus.
  12. Unnecessary talking with the school bus operator is prohibited.
  13. Respect the rights and safety of others.  Loud conversation, horseplay, profanity, fighting, name calling, throwing objects, etc. are prohibited.  
  14. Students are prohibited from using or carrying tobacco products, alcohol, drugs, any controlled substance, drug paraphernalia, weapons, objects that shoot any type of projectile, and items that could cause a fire on the bus (matches, lighters, etc.).  Offenses relative to this item shall result in the pupil’s immediate removal from the bus and/or indefinite suspension.
  15. Hitching rides via the rear bumper or other parts of the bus is prohibited.
  16. A bus pass is necessary to get off anywhere other than the student’s scheduled stop or to ride a different bus. To obtain a bus pass, bring a note from a parent/guardian to the Administrative Office before 1:00 pm.

As BUHS Policy F2 states: “Maintaining student control on the bus is a primary responsibility of the driver. Unmanageable behavior will be reported to the school principal. In the event a student is denied transportation privileges for a period of time, parents will be given notice by letter as well as direct verbal contact when possible.” If a student is denied bus privileges, the parents must assume the responsibility for transporting the student to and from school including transportation for students removed from the bus for disciplinary reasons on the last day of school. Please be aware that the buses have been equipped with video devices (cameras) so all riders should have no expectation of privacy. The district and F.M. Kuzmeskus Inc. will use the tapes only for required business purposes and student discipline matters.

Parents are urged to call their Administrative Office if they have any questions pertaining to bus transportation rules or concerns about student behavior on the bus.  Questions regarding routes, pick up points, etc., should be directed to F.M. Kuzmeskus Inc. at 490-2817.

Cameras and Video Recorders – To protect everyone’s privacy in the school community, cameras may not be used in school except for educational purposes which have been planned and/or approved by a teacher. This includes cameras that are part of an electronic device including cell phones.

Senior Privileges – During unscheduled time, seniors may choose to study in the Library, go to the Senior Lounge, or be in the cafeteria. Abuse of this privilege will result in disciplinary consequences which could include loss of the privilege, assignment to a study hall or exclusion from the campus during unscheduled time. Seniors may also apply to their Administrator for an off campus pass.

Computer Use Guidelines – Students are issued a Chromebook to complete schoolwork during the school year. Students may use school computers for schoolwork and other legitimate educational purposes such as researching career opportunities or planning for further education. School computers may not be used for games, personal e-mail or other personal/recreational use. All students must abide by the provisions of the WSESU Electronic Information Acceptable Use Policy. The Acceptable Use Policy contains guidelines that are issued to help students understand their obligations under this policy. These guidelines are intended to provide examples of prohibited uses of technology, but will never be a comprehensive list. Students should, at all times, remember that their use of technology must be safe, legal, ethical, secure, and responsible. Violations of the Acceptable Use Policy will have disciplinary consequences and may have legal consequences as well. A copy of the Acceptable Use Policy and Guidelines is on the BUHS website. All students receiving a Google Chromebook must follow the same computer use guidelines and have also read and signed the guidelines specifically pertaining to the use of their Chromebook.  Parents of students receiving a Chromebook must also have read and signed the policy form. All Chromebooks are collected at the conclusion of each school year.

Dance Regulations –  

The following rules apply to the Senior Semi-Formal and the Prom:

Dress Code – The board of Brattleboro Union High School District #6 recognizes that students' mode of dress and grooming is a manifestation of their personal style and individual preference. Our decisions regarding dress are based on the need to foster a climate conducive to a caring learning environment that nurtures personal growth and promotes safety, security, and positive attitudes. Paramount to this effort is the expectation that students dress appropriately for the school setting. Apparel that draws undue attention to the wearer can detract from the educational process and is therefore inappropriate. School is a work/learning environment; as such, acceptable standards of dress for a school setting will naturally differ from those standards associated with social attire. We believe adherence to this policy will contribute toward a positive, safe and healthy learning environment. Accordingly, the BUHS District #6 Board shall authorize school regulations that prohibit student dress or grooming practices which:

• Present a hazard to the health and safety of the student or to others in the school.

• Materially interfere with schoolwork, create disorder, or disrupt the educational program.

• Cause excessive wear or damage to school property.

• Prevent students from achieving educational objectives because of blocked vision or restricted movement.

• Obscure or mask a student’s identity. Exceptions to the dress code may be made for certain school-approved events or programs.

Driving and Parking – The privilege of driving to school is granted to students subject to the following regulations:

Fundraising – Only recognized BUHS or WRCC student groups and organizations may engage in fundraising activities on school grounds.

Immunization Required – All students, grades K-12, will be required to show proof of immunization or exemption before entering or returning to school in the fall. Exemption forms must be signed annually for all students whose parents have claimed an exemption. In order to sign the exemption form, parents must read and understand evidence-based educational material found on the Vermont Department of Health website. Students not meeting vaccine or exemption requirements may not attend school without a provisional admittance form. Students provisionally admitted to school must be fully immunized within six months of enrollment.

Inappropriate Language – Students should not use language that is obscene or that may reasonably be perceived as disruptive to the educational process.

Locks and Lockers – Combinations for hall lockers may be obtained in the main office. Personal locks are not allowed on hall lockers. Lockers are the property of BUHS and are subject to being searched at any time, with or without the student's permission, as outlined in BUHS School Board Policy F4. Lockers are emptied and cleaned at the conclusion of each school year. Students’ personal items that have not been removed will be disposed of in an appropriate manner.        

Lost and Found – Lost property may be turned in and/or claimed in the main office.  

Lunch – There are three 30 minute lunch periods.  Students are assigned a lunch period between 11:35 and 12:55. Students go to lunch during the period assigned to their period 5-6 class. While in the cafeteria students are expected to clean up, respect others, keep aisles clear, socialize quietly and be seated except to get food or leave. Students may seek out a teacher, stop at the library, visit the counseling office or do other necessary tasks on the way to lunch, but once in the cafeteria, students may not leave without a pass. NOTE: Off Campus Lunch passes may not be used to exit the cafeteria. Students who come to the cafeteria during lunch have made a decision to remain there until that lunch period ends.

The courtyard adjacent to the art wing will be open at administrative discretion, students who choose to eat there should be sure to sign out with the staff member on duty. Students should not eat or congregate in the area between the library and the courtyard.

Medication – Students who are required to take medication during the school day must take the medication to the Health Office in a pharmacy labeled container. Any medication, including over the counter, natural treatments or prescription must be turned in to the health office in their original containers. With parental permission students may be allowed to carry their inhalers and/or EpiPens. Medication will be administered to the student with written permission from the parent or guardian, and written orders from a physician detailing the name of the student, the drug dosage, reason for giving, and time the medication is to be given, in accordance with BUHS Policy F-8.

Middle School Building – All students in grades 9-12 are to stay out of the Middle School Building at all times unless there for a class or conducting business with a teacher or the Middle School Office.  

WRCC – BUHS students are not allowed in the buildings or hallways of the Windham Regional Career Center unless they have a scheduled class there.

Off Campus Privileges – Seniors may request Off Campus Privileges for lunch, whole blocks, or periods 1 and/or 9.  No permission will be granted for single periods which fall between scheduled classes. Forms are available in the Administrative Office and a parent’s signature is required. Criteria for eligibility are:

The school reserves the right to revoke this privilege if it is abused or as a disciplinary consequence.

Other means of transportation – Students coming to school by bicycle should secure their bikes to the bike rack located next to the main entrance. Students and staff who use the rack are responsible for bringing their own lock. BUHS does not accept responsibility for the security of these items. Once on campus (parking lots, walkways, etc.) bicycles, mopeds and skateboards are to be walked or carried. Students using these forms of transportation are strongly encouraged to wear proper safety gear. Students who ride mopeds, scooters or other forms of transportation to school should check in the safety office for the best location to park.

PE Excuses – For a temporary excuse from physical education, a parent note is required. If a student is to be excused from P.E. for a longer period of time, a medical excuse from a physician stating any limitations to physical activity and suggested alternative activities should be given to the Administrative Office and will be kept on file for reference in the Health Office.

Posters & Notices – The bulletin boards and walls in Brattleboro Union High School are intended for school use. Public notices must carry the official stamp of approval that is available in the Principal’s Office. When putting up any item on the walls of the school, the following rules apply:

Prohibited Items – The following items are either prohibited by law and School Board policy, or are disruptive to the educational process and to the operation of the school.

Public Displays of Affection – Anything other than a brief display that does not disrupt the educational environment and that is not offensive to passersby, is not appropriate. Students will be warned about this behavior and reported to their administrator if they persist or repeat the behavior.  

Stolen Property – Thefts should be reported to your Administrative Office. Students are cautioned not to bring valuable items or large amounts of cash to school and not to share locker combinations.

School Property – BUHS furnishes textbooks and other materials to all students. Students are assigned numbered books and are responsible for the care of any books or other materials issued. Loss or damage of any school property will result in payment to the school.

Student ID Cards – Students are issued picture ID cards each year, in the fall. They may be used to check out library materials. Students must also show their ID when using Off Campus and Lunch Privileges. There is a fee for replacement cards if they are lost.


Telephone Use  Students should not ask to use classroom telephones. If there is a legitimate need to call parents, students may request to use a phone in either the counseling or administrative office. Phone calls from outside are discouraged. The school will handle emergency calls from parents, but other calls will receive a low priority. Parents, guardians and other family members must refrain from calling or texting their student during school hours; this is extremely distracting to the student and the rest of the class. If the student is observed using their phone at an inappropriate time, it will be confiscated regardless of whom they are in contact with.


Our highest priority is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of our students and staff. All school personnel wear identification badges for security purposes. We ask students and parents to assist us in maintaining building security by following campus regulations regarding visitors, exiting the building, and entering the building.

Body Fluid Exposure – Students may be exposed to diseases at school by coming in contact with someone else’s body fluids (blood, urine, or vomit). In order to reduce the risk of contracting a transmittable disease (HIV, HEP B) at school, we ask students to come to the Health Office for treatment if they are bleeding or have had contact through their mouth, eyes, nose, or cut in skin with anyone else’s body fluids. The student may be referred to a health provider if there is serious exposure.

Building Evacuation – At times, for reasons of safety, it may be necessary for school officials to direct students and staff to leave the school building or move to sheltered areas within the building. During these times, all students are expected to follow the directions of staff members. All passes, permissions, leaves, and privileges are cancelled during school evacuations.


Fire Alarms – Directions for evacuating the building are placed in all classrooms. Once out of the building, students should move quickly to the designated area. All driveways, parking lots, and walkways near the building must be kept open so that fire and emergency equipment may get to the building.

Other Evacuations – At times it may be necessary to evacuate the building for non-fire related reasons including bomb threats, weather emergencies, nuclear accidents, chemical spills, etc. During these events, students will be given specific information over the public address system. Students are expected to respond as directed during such events. Following an evacuation, school officials will re-open the building when our Incident Command Center staff has determined that the situation has been resolved.

Precautionary Transfer – In the event of an emergency that requires evacuation of the site and transfer of students to another location, students will be transported by bus. Students may also leave in their own cars, the cars of other students or with staff members provided parental permission to do so is on file. Permission forms are distributed in the fall and may be updated at any time. Please note that in a true emergency, the authorities would block access to the school site from the outside to facilitate evacuation.  

Exit and Entry – During the school day, all outside doors are locked. Students and visitors must only use the main entrances of the high school except in cases of a building evacuation. Please do not prop open doors.

Secure the Building drill – WSESU has recently adopted ALICE: Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate as a procedure in response to a threat at the school. BUHS will continue to practice and train using ALICE throughout the school year.

School Delays and Cancellations – Radio stations WKVT and WTSA will announce the closing of school in bad weather or for emergency reasons. School delays and cancellations will also be announced over the automated phone system. It is important that parents keep updated phone numbers at the school for the phone system to function properly.

Please note: In the event that the school is evacuated and the school closed for the day, it may not be possible to notify every parent. For this reason, parents and students should develop a family plan whereby the student will go home or to some other location and notify his/her parents of the situation.

School Resource Officer – There is a certified law enforcement officer whose primary assignment is BUHS/BAMS. As a member of our educational community, this officer has three roles: 1) law enforcement/safety specialist, 2) educator, 3) law-related counselor, mentor and liaison to the community.

Child Find Notice – Under Public Law 94-142 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, all children need, deserve, and have a right to a public education. Federal Law states that the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union has a duty to ensure that this right to a free education should also be available to all handicapped children with disabilities.The Windham Southeast Supervisory Union, including the school districts of Dummerston, Guilford, Putney, Vernon, Brattleboro, and Brattleboro Union High School, need to know if there are handicapped children, or children or youth with disabilities, between the ages of three (3) and twenty-one (21) years who are out of school and not receiving any education at all.In addition, the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union wishes to locate all infants 0 years to 2 years 11 months who may be disabled and in need of an evaluation. Confidentiality – The Windham Southeast Supervisory Union school district wishes to remind parents and students over 18 years of age who do not want children's names publicized for any reason(s), to indicate that desire in a letter to the Superintendent of Schools. Public Law 93-380 includes an amendment, popularly referred to as the "Buckley Amendment,” which requires school systems to refrain from publicizing any information at all about children when the parents do not wish such publicity to occur. Examples of the school's publication of a list of names would certainly include athletic events, honor roll lists, music or dramatic performances, and other student activity functions such as Future Farmers of America, Future Homemakers of America, etc. Unless written notification from the parent is received by the Superintendent of Schools, it will be assumed that publication is agreeable.

Search and Seizure – School administrators have a responsibility to all students to maintain order and discipline in a safe learning environment while on school property. Desks, lockers, textbooks, and other materials or supplies loaned by the school to students remain the property of the school and students should not expect the contents to be private. A student's person and/or personal effects (e.g. purse, book bag, etc.) may be searched whenever a school authority has reasonable suspicion to believe that the student is in possession of illegal or unauthorized materials. Searches of students, their personal belongings and/or vehicles parked on school grounds will be conducted if there is reasonable suspicion to believe that a breach of school policy or law is being committed.  Searches conducted of students and their belongings will be conducted by a school employee of the same sex and, whenever possible, in the presence of another school employee. School employees are not the agents of law enforcement officials. Search and/or seizure by law enforcement officials on school property may occur when a warrant or other legal basis exists, authorizing such search and/or seizure, and when the requirements of the board's policy on interrogations by law enforcement officers has been complied with. Interrogation or Searches by Non-School Personnel  - A student in school may not be interviewed, interrogated, or searched by any authority without the knowledge of a school administrator who will be required to make a determination regarding whether to gain parental permission before allowing the interview, interrogation or search, unless the investigation is conducted by the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services in accordance with Chapter 49 of Title 33 of the Vermont Statutes Annotated. Any interrogation by non-school personnel must be conducted in private with an administrator or his or her designee present. No questioning by non-school personnel of a student under the age of eighteen who may be accused of an offense shall occur unless the parent(s) or guardian(s) have been notified and have been given the opportunity to be present at the time of the questioning. Questioning may, however, take place without notification of parents if such questioning is a result of the school involving the police because of actions at the school or is required due to emergency or urgent potential danger to life or property, as determined by an administrator or designee. Non-Discrimination – It is the intent of Brattleboro Union High School District #6 that the Board and its employees will not discriminate against any intended beneficiaries of statutory protection (including but not limited to students, employees, parents, guardians, other members of the community or applicants for employment or admission, and unions or professional organizations holding collective bargaining or professional agreements with the school district) on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, handicap, and/or age, in admission and access to, or treatment or employment in, any of the high school programs and activities, policies, procedures, and practices, and to the extent provided by law. Any person having inquiries concerning the Brattleboro Union High School District #6 compliance with the regulations implementing Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, or Section 504 is directed to contact the Equity Coordinator, Ms. Kate Margaitis, Assistant Principal at Brattleboro Union High School, who has been designated by the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union District to coordinate the District's efforts to comply with the regulations implementing Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, and Section 504.

Unlawful Harassment – It is the policy of Brattleboro Union High School District #6 to maintain a learning and working environment that is free from harassment and violence on the basis of disability, gender (sex), marital or parental status, national origin, race, religion, or sexual orientation. [BUHS Policy F23, Vermont Statutes 16 VSA Section 565] This policy includes language for sexual harassment, BUHS Policy D12. It is a violation of this policy for any pupil, teacher, administrator or other school personnel of the School District to harass a pupil, teacher, administrator, or other school personnel through conduct or communication on the basis of disability, gender (sex), marital or parental status, national origin, race, religion gender identity, or sexual orientation. School personnel are required to take prompt action and report any act of harassment as defined by this policy to their building administrator.  If the complaint involves their building administrator(s), the report should be made directly to the School District Equity Coordinator, Kate Margaitis, or the Superintendent. (For purposes of this policy, school personnel include school board members, school employees, agents, volunteers, contractors, or persons subject to the supervision and control of the School District.) The School District will act to investigate all complaints, formal or informal, verbal or written, of harassment due to disability, gender (sex), marital or parental status, national origin, race, religion, or sexual orientation, and to discipline or take appropriate action against any pupil, teacher, administrator, or other school personnel who is found to have violated this policy.

Any pupil, teacher, administrator, or other school personnel who believes he or she has been subjected to harassment or violence under this policy, or any person with knowledge or belief of conduct prohibited by this policy, is entitled to make an internal complaint to be responded to pursuant to this policy and/or to pursue additional remedies provided by federal and state law.  Complaints of harassment may be made to the following agencies:

Threats and Disruptions to School Operations – The Brattleboro Union High School District #6 has adopted a comprehensive policy on what to do in the event of a bomb threat or threats to disrupt school operations. You may obtain a copy of the complete policy by requesting one from the principal’s office.

        While the School District intends to respect the legitimate privacy interests of all persons, it is lawful for school authorities within constitutional boundaries to conduct reasonable examination of personal property on school grounds, including but not limited to, lockers, desks, backpacks, book bags, and motor vehicles. In the event of a bomb threat or other threats, the School District may have to search such items in order to assure the safety and protection of people and property.

        It is important for members of the school community to know that any academic time lost as a result of a bomb threat, or other threats intended to disrupt school operations, will be rescheduled, either on a weekend, vacation day, or following what would otherwise be the end of the school year.

        In addition, under State law, the making of a bomb threat is a very serious criminal offense, punishable for even a first offense by as much as 2 years in prison and a $5,000 fine. The making of such a threat may also lead to civil liability.

Animal Dissection – BUHS Board Policy G14 states that students may have the right to be excused from participating in or observing activities that involve the dissection or vivisection of animals. A student excused under this policy shall be provided with an alternative method by which they can learn and be assessed on material required for the course.

Pesticides – As a general rule, pesticides are not used at Brattleboro Union High School. In the event that pesticides become necessary, the application will be performed by qualified individuals, following all pertinent state and federal regulations. In addition, students and parents will be notified.

Asbestos – Brattleboro Union High School District #6, which is composed of Brattleboro Union High School, Brattleboro Area Middle School, and the Windham Regional Career Center, has complied with the Environmental Protection Agency Regulations (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act) contained in CFR Part 763 which pertains to the requirements for having all school buildings owned, rented, or leased inspected for asbestos containing materials and the preparation of Asbestos Management Plans based upon the results of the inspections. These plans are available for inspection by the public, parents, teachers, and all other school personnel and they may be viewed at Brattleboro Union High School, 131 Fairground Road, Brattleboro, VT 05301.

Teacher Qualifications – As a parent of a student at Brattleboro Union High School, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct your child. Federal law allows you to ask for certain information about your child’s classroom teachers, and requires the school to give you this information in a timely manner if you ask for it. Military Recruiters – Federal regulations require school districts to allow the same access to students by military recruiters as they do college and job recruiters. This access includes releasing secondary school students’ names, addresses, and telephone numbers to military recruiters, who can use the information for armed services recruiting and for informing these students of scholarship opportunities.  However, secondary school students and their parents can request that the information not be released. A form is available from the BUHS registrar for those students and their parents who do not want this information to be provided to military recruiters. This form is mailed home to all freshmen, but parents may request another form at any time.

Seclusion and Restraint – The Vermont State Board of Education rules on seclusion and restraint went into effect on August 15, 2011.  These rules require public schools to annually inform parents of enrolled students of the policies pertaining to the use of physical restraint and seclusion, the intent to use positive behavioral strategies and supports and its intention to avoid the use of physical restraint or seclusion to address targeted student behavior.  The complete BUHS policy may be obtained at the administrative offices.
