3 things cause condensation (the drops of water you see on the inside of windows)
1. If there is too much moisture in the air:
- dry your washing outside if you can
- don’t dry your washing on a radiator (it makes your boiler work harder, costs as
much as a tumble dryer and creates a lot of condensation)
- dry your washing on a rack by a slightly open window
- make sure your tumble dryer is properly vented
- when running a bath, put the cold water in first
2. If there is not enough ventilation:
- never block air bricks or air vents
- open windows a little bit when cooking and after baths or showers
3. If rooms are not warm enough:
- in cold weather, condensation is a problem in many homes
- try to keep temperatures between 18-21 degrees centigrade in main living areas when you are indoors. This will stop condensation forming on the outside walls and on surfaces

Rising Damp
- this is not as common as condensation it is caused by a failed damp proof course
- you can tell if you have rising damp by a tide mark on a ground floor wall
Penetrating Damp
- any water that comes from outside to indoors
- growing areas of damp on walls or ceilings
- wet, crumbly plaster
- mildew
- drips and puddles
This can be caused by:
- leaking pipes
- damaged roof
- gaps around window frames
- leaking or blocked guttering
Did you know?
A family of 4 can add up to 40 litres of moisture in the air - just by breathing!
Cooking, baths, showers and washing can add up to 20 litres a week.
One load of washing puts one litre of water into the air.
