Evening Prayer

Monday 5 August

O God, we call,

O God, we call,

From deep inside we yearn,

From deep inside we yearn,

From deep inside we yearn, for you

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me:

because the Lord has anointed me

to bring good tidings to the afflicted.

The Lord has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted:

to proclaim liberty for the captives,

and release for those in prison,

O God, we call…

To comfort all who mourn:

to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,

The oil of gladness instead of mourning:

a garment of splendour for the heavy heart.

They shall be called trees of righteousness:

planted for the glory of the Lord.

O God, we call…

The day is now past and the night is at hand.

Let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence may be kept.

Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

Romans 7.1-12

1 Do you not know, brothers and sisters—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only during that person’s lifetime? 2 Thus a married woman is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives; but if her husband dies, she is discharged from the law concerning the husband. 3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man, she is not an adulteress. 4 In the same way, my friends, you have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 While we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we are slaves not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit. 7 What then should we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet, if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, ‘You shall not covet.’ 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law sin lies dead. 9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived 10 and I died, and the very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.

Word of God; Word of Life:  Thanks be to God

In Christ Jesus, the life-giving law of the Spirit:

has set us free from the law of sin and death.

All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God:

it is the Spirit that enables us to cry, ‘Abba!’ Father.

The Spirit bears witness

that we are God’s children:

and if God’s children, then heirs of God.

We are heirs of God and fellow-heirs with Christ:

If we share his sufferings now

we shall be glorified with him hereafter.

These sufferings that we now endure:

are not worth comparing

with the glory that shall be revealed.

For the creation waits with eager longing:

for the revealing of the children of God.

Song  - Come People Of The Risen King

Come people of the Risen King

Who delight to bring Him praise

Come all and tune your hearts to sing

To the Morning Star of grace

From the shifting shadows of the earth

We will lift our eyes to Him

Where steady arms of mercy reach

To gather children in

Rejoice rejoice let ev'ry tongue rejoice

One heart one voice

O Church of Christ rejoice

Come those whose joy is morning sun

And those weeping through the night

Come those who tell of battles won

And those struggling in the fight

For His perfect love will never change

And His mercies never cease

But follow us through all our days

With the certain hope of peace

Rejoice rejoice let ev'ry tongue rejoice

One heart one voice

O Church of Christ rejoice

Come young and old from ev'ry land

Men and women of the faith

Come those with full or empty hands

Find the riches of His grace

Over all the world His people sing

Shore to shore we hear them call

The truth that cries through ev'ry age

Our God is all in all

Rejoice rejoice let ev'ry tongue rejoice

One heart one voice

O Church of Christ rejoice

Lighten our darkness, Lord, we pray: and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us praise the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Amen.
