Navigating the learning management system (LMS) | - Google Classroom: It is not necessary to assign points for each assignment.
- Blackboard: In the grade center, you can add a grade column that is “final grade” that is manually entered.
- Forms: Create a form students fill out to let them do the work of reporting their effort. See examples from ED-677: Digital Storytelling. Students fill out the same form every week, and use a different form to self-assess larger projects.
- Google Sheets: Individually share a grade spreadsheet with each student so they can see where they are at.
- Weekly Check Ins: By email, videoconference, etc. have a weekly check in with learners to give them feedback.
* No matter what LMS you use or what methods you use to assign formative or summative grades, it is important that you communicate with your learners throughout the course. |
Things to consider | |
Questions to ponder | - How do you introduce contract based grading?
- How can you respond to students who resist grading contracts?
- How can you overcome the limitations of the LMS to make contract based grading work for your course?
