Other Examples

Navigating the learning management system (LMS)

  • Google Classroom: It is not necessary to assign points for each assignment.
  • Blackboard: In the grade center, you can add a grade column that is “final grade” that is manually entered.
  • Forms: Create a form students fill out to let them do the work of reporting their effort. See examples from ED-677: Digital Storytelling. Students fill out the same form every week, and use a different form to self-assess larger projects.
  • Google Sheets: Individually share a grade spreadsheet with each student so they can see where they are at.
  • Weekly Check Ins: By email, videoconference, etc. have a weekly check in with learners to give them feedback.

* No matter what LMS you use or what methods you use to assign formative or summative grades, it is important that you communicate with your learners throughout the course.

Things to consider

Questions to ponder

  • How do you introduce contract based grading?
  • How can you respond to students who resist grading contracts?
  • How can you overcome the limitations of the LMS to make contract based grading work for your course?
