Dear _____,

We support your effort of inclusion and diversity. Ethnic Studies provides students the opportunity to build understanding and appreciation for the contributions of multiple cultures, while seeing diverse representation in curriculum. Ethnic Studies programs can build bridges of understanding and an appreciation for the contributions of multiple cultures. It also enables kids to see themselves in their curriculum, which increases engagement and better outcomes for minority students. These efforts are valuable for all students to be empowered to build a better world.

We have some concerns about the _______ program that has recently been implemented. We are asking you to ….  [this must be specific – the following are only examples]

Some unintended outcomes of this type of program expand throughout the entire community.  We have a very diverse population with a variety of backgrounds, many of which cannot be assumed simply by looking at the color of a person’s skin. Immigrants, first generation    Americans, multiracial backgrounds, varied religious backgrounds all mix together in a way that makes each child unique, with their own experiences and perspectives.  We stand with you in empowering our children to learn about each others’ differences and experiences in a way that is open, accepting, and empowering for all.

Forcing children to self-identify and identify others according to their skin color can confuse them. They don’t understand why they are being classified by the color of their skin, and they don’t know where that leaves them, or their family members, since they don’t feel that they fit into such a narrow box. Additionally, when they are marginalized because of this singular world-view, they do not feel empowered to change, look beyond color, embrace each other’s culture, and build a better world.  Lastly, putting kids into boxes, such as oppressors or victims, leads to bullying. We have seen this _______.

We want to be partners with you in teaching our children hard facts of history that have been too often ignored. One of the best ways to do this is by showing them a diversity of opinions and views.  This allows them to delve into the complexities that often accompany these issues, and to ultimately think critically by asking hard questions and learning how to have equally hard discussions in a productive and respectful way.

We know that you had our children’s best interests in mind when this program was created. However, as you can see, the unintended consequences are not meeting the district’s goals in a safe and welcoming environment for our children. Please ….  [repeat the ask from above].

Sincerely,
