BENTANG JAWA
Bentang Jawa is a self-supported and self-navigation ultra cycling race event across Java Island, which will depart from the west side (Carita Beach) and head to the east side (Banyuwangi) of the island. Bentang Jawa participant will travel a distance of approximately 1.500 kilometers with 16.000 meter of elevation gain, which must be covered in a maximum time of 156 hours, starting on Sunday, August 14, 2022 at 05.30 WIB, ending on Saturday, August 21, 2022, at 17.30 WIB.
Each participant of Bentang Jawa is required to read, fully understand, and comply with the race Rules & Regulations.
RISK
- Bentang Jawa is a self-supported and self-navigation ultra cycling race event which is an extremely high-risk sport where the activity will be carried out in an open environment that is exposed to:
- Various types of weather such as rain, storm, heat, avalanche, fallen tree, and other instances of climate events.
- Various types of road traffic conditions, such as road surface, accidents, other vehicle behavior, etc..
- Various other human factors related such as collision, crimes, etc..
- Participants might be experiencing extreme fatigue, high intensity of cardiovascular activity, sleep deprived, dehydration, hypothermia, accidents, and other injuries or sickness that might be trigged by cycling activity or by food/drinks consumed during the race.
- It is the sole responsibility of the participant to fully understand these risks, and to perform sufficient preparation and planning to anticipate and/or minimize any risks.
- Bentang Jawa DOES NOT PROVIDE supporting facilities in any form, including: safety, accommodation, transport, drinks, food, first aid, medical evacuation, technical assistance and or other forms of liability.
RULES
- Cycling from start to finish through a predetermined route. Mass starts for all participants and must finish within the specified time limit.
- Participants need to validate their brevet card upon arrival at each checkpoint, if they arrived within the specified cut-off-time.
- Participants must have their supporting documents (identity card, insurance card, etc.) in hand, at all times during the event.
- The nature of Bentang Jawa is an unsupported / self supported event.
- Food, hydration, navigation, safety, health, and accomodation are entirely participant’s personal responsibility.
- All supplies and logistics must be brought by the cyclist themselves or purchased/obtained from commercial and/or public service providers such as hotels, inns, stalls, supermarkets, post office, bike workshops, police station, etc..
- Any kind of support (i.e. team support, pacers, and/or vehicle following participants) are not allowed throughout the race course.
- Pre-arranged logistics (i.e. sending supplies to any point within the race course) by any means are not allowed.
- Asking / accepting help and/or assistance from third parties (family, friends, relatives, acquaintances) are not allowed.
- Unsolicited assistance from local residents is allowed
- Visits from relatives, friends, relatives, acquaintances, communities during the competition are not permitted.
- Bentang Jawa does not provide any kind of assistance.
- Drafting is not allowed, unless within the same team.
- Collaborating with other participants (outside of their team mate) in the form of drafting/peloton is not allowed
- Pacing with non-participants either with other bicycles, motorbikes, or cars is not allowed.
- Drafting behind any kind of vehicle is not allowed.
- All forward movements must use their own power, must not be pushed (by motorbikes/cars/other cyclists) or use other assistive devices such as e-bikes.
- Recommended type of bicycle: road/race/touring/hybrid/gravel bike, hardtail mountain bike, folding bike.
- Not recommended type of bicycle: fixed gear with both front & rear brake installed, full suspension mountain bike.
- Prohibited type of bicycle: ebike, bicycle with any form of motorized power, tandem bike, and fixed gear without any brakes installed.
- All cyclists must keep their proof of cycling (such as GPS in the form of a GPX file, or activity logs on Strava), and be able submit their proof to Bentang Jawa, if requested.
- GPS tracker must always be active; inactivity for 12 (twelve) consecutive hours is considered to have resigned from the competition (scratched).
- Participants must use GPS tracker provided by Bentang Jawa, or
- Using a supported GPS tracker device (SPOT)
- Participants need to make sure that their tracker device is active at all times during the competition.
- Participants will be deemed to have resigned (scratched) from the competition should they be (1) not having insurance coverage, (2) not using a helmet on any ride during the competition, and (3) not using sufficient bike lights.
- Participants must have an insurance that is valid at least from 14 August 2022 to 20 August 2022, which covers personal accident, medical expenses, emergency assistance, medical evacuation, and personal liability.
- Participants must wear a helmet on any ride during the competition.
- Participants must have at least 2 front lights and 2 rear lights.
- Cyclists must obey and respect the applicable traffic rules.
- Cyclists agreed to follow and adhere to the spirit of unsupported and equality.
- Bentang Jawa does not provide support in any form including security, ambulance and medical, mechanical, evacuation or other forms of assistance.
Bentang Jawa team will process and investigate all forms of regulatory violations indications reports, received through participant, public, committee team observations, tracking system data observations, and other reports. Bentang Jawa reserves the right to penalize and/or disqualify the participant. The Bentang Jawa team's decision is final and cannot be contested.
WINNER’S RATING, CATEGORY, PRIZE
Bentang Jawa finishers will be assessed based on these criteria:
- Regulatory compliance
- Time limit / Cut-off-time compliance
Assessment process:
- Participants who meet criteria A and B, will be included in the General Classification category (rank and time will be officially recorded).
- Participants who meet criteria A but failed to comply with criteria B, will be recorded as a Finisher, and excluded from General Classification (rank and time result will not be officially recorded.
- Participants who failed to meet criteria A, will be deemed to have resigned from the competition (Scratched).
Bentang Jawa will only have 3 (three) winner category, based on their fastest official finish time:
- Men - Solo
- Women - Solo
- Team - Pair
Bentang Jawa is not committed to provide any form of prizes to the winners of the competition.
COMPETITION CATEGORY
There will be only two competition category in Bentang Jawa 2022:
- Individual (Solo)
- Team (Pair)
REGISTRATION
General Information
Applicants for Bentang Jawa 2022 need to register themselves through our website within the registration period. Bentang Jawa team will conduct a collective and thorough selection process for all applications that have been submitted. Applicants who successfully pass the selection process will be announced through Bentang Jawa website and will subsequently receive a series of further information to confirm their participation status in Bentang Jawa 2022.
Bentang Jawa 2022 will have a total of 75 (seventy five) slots for both Individual (Solo) and Team (Pair) category. Slot for Team (Pair) category will be counted as 2 (two) individual slots per team. Additional total slots might or might not be added on a later date at Bentang Jawa discretion.
Registration Requirements
- Registration is open to all Indonesian citizens, foreigners who are domiciled in Indonesia, and foreigners who have a temporary visa in Indonesia.
- Applicants must be 17 years old and above when registering.
- Applicants must complete the online registration form in its entirety, in accordance with the instructions/questions given when filling out the form.
- Applicants are highly expected to possess adequate experiences in endurance sports in general, and unsupported long distance cycling in particular. Examples of such adequate experience (but not limited to) are completion of several Audax / Randonneuring with > 300 KM distance, completion of several multi-disciplined long distance competition (Ironman 140.6), and many other similar events.
- Successful registrants are then required to submit these following information and/or documents:
- Digitally signed (must use Privy* application) Approval and Waiver Letter. The said document must be signed by the participant themselves and their next of kin. Bentang Jawa will provide the document template at a later date.
- Copy of valid insurance certificate or insurance card.
- Proof of transfer of registration fee.
Registration Fee
Bentang Jawa 2022 registration fee is IDR 3.000.000 for Indonesian citizens and residents (with valid KITAS/KITAP), and USD 250 (payable only via Paypal) for non-residents. Registration fee is not refundable without any exception.
Included in the fee are as follows:
- Participant event cycling cap
- Brevet Card
- Tracking system and tracking device
- Manned checkpoints and manned finish point during the competition, subject to the cut-off-time of each point.
Bentang Jawa will provide each participant with a tracking device (GPS tracker or mobile phone) which needs to be returned in a good condition at the finish point.
In the event that participants did not reach the finish point within the cut-off-time and/or not able to return the tracking device, they may send in the device to Bentang Jawa within the next 10 days. Please send the tracking device to this following address: xxxxxxxxxxx (ATTN: xxxxxxxxxxx)
If the tracking device is damaged upon returning and/or failing to return the tracking device, participants are required to pay a compensation of IDR xxxxxxxxxx.
These following (but not limited to) are not included in the registration fee:
- Accommodation before, during, and after finishing the competition.
- Meals and beverages before, during, and after finishing the competition.
- Transportation before, during, and after finishing the competition.
- Insurance, first responder, any form of evacuations including medical, medical care, and any other medical needs.
- Technical support, safety, and other forms of support.
EVENT TIMELINE
- 16 April 2022 - 15 May 2022: Registration Period
All interested applicants are welcomed to submit their applications. No fees will be charged at this stage.
- 16 May 2022 - 28 May 2022: Selection Period
Bentang Jawa team will conduct a collective and thorough selection process for all applications that have been submitted.
- 29 May 2022: Participant List Announcement
Successful applicants will be announced through Bentang Jawa website and will subsequently receive a series of further information to confirm their participation status in Bentang Jawa 2022.
- 30 May 2022 - 12 June 2022: Payment Period
Successful applicants will be required to pay the registration fee in full within this period. Payment outside this period will not be entertained and their slot will be automatically forfeited.
- 12 June 2022 - 13 August 2022: Participant List Announcement
Confirmed participants will receive further information following up to the event start.
- 13 August 2022: Race Pack Collection & Briefing at (to be announced)
09.00 - 15.00 Race Pack Collection
There will be strict screening of required documents and equipment beforehand. Participant need to prepare the following items:
- Official identity document (KTP, Driving License, Passport, etc.)
- Proof of valid insurance
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination status*
- Full setup of the bicycle, particularly mandatory gear.

*For the convenience of all parties involved in Bentang Jawa, all participants must have completed 3 doses of COVID-19 vaccination. During race pack collection, participants are required to show their proof of completion of all 3 doses COVID-19 vaccination. If due to certain medical conditions, participants are unable to receive the COVID-19 vaccination, then the participant must have a Doctor's Certificate stating the said condition.
RACE COURSE, CHECKPOINTS, and TRACKING SYSTEM
Race Course
Bentang Jawa will start from Carita Beach and finish at Banyuwangi, covering approximately 1.500 KM with approximately 16.000 meter of elevation gain. Road surfaces throughout the race course are a mix of 95% asphalt/concrete and 5% non-asphalt.
Participants are highly suggested to observe the weather forecast throughout the race course. We recommend using the Epic Ride Weather application (available for iOS and Android devices) or other similar applications. Temperature will vary between 15°C - 36°C, depending on time and weather conditions in the specific area. There will be a few sections where temperature can drop significantly below 15°C especially during the night.
Note:
- Final race course will be communicated to all confirmed participants at least 1 (one) week before start time.
- Accommodation sign in the race course online map only refers to the possibility that accommodation/hotels/inns are available at the particular area and not refers to a specific address.

Note:
- Final checkpoints and its cut-off-time are not final and will be communicated to all confirmed participants at least 1 (one) week before start time.
Tracking System
Bentang Jawa use RACEMAP (www.racemap.com) as a tracking and monitoring system. Participant have to options regarding the use of tracking device:
- Using their own personal GPS tracking device such as SPOT tracker. Participants are required to inform Bentang Jawa their unique SPOT device number for registration to the tracking system.
- Using mobile phone with GPS capability, which will be provided by Bentang Jawa
Bentang Jawa will provide each participant with a tracking device (GPS tracker or mobile phone) which needs to be returned in a good condition at the finish point.

BICYCLE AND MANDATORY GEAR
Bicycle
- Recommended type of bicycle: road/race/touring/hybrid/gravel bike, hardtail mountain bike, folding bike.
- Not recommended type of bicycle: fixed gear with both front & rear brake installed, full suspension mountain bike.
- Prohibited type of bicycle: e-bike, bicycle with any form of motorized power, tandem bike, and fixed gear without any brakes installed.
Mandatory Gear
- Helmet
- 1 (one) front light plus 1 (one) spare front light including spare batteries
- 1 (one) tail light plus 1 (one) spare tail light including spare batteries
- A minimum of 1 (one) water bidon / bottle
- Rain Jacket
- High Visibility vest and/or jacket
- Emergency Blanket
- A minimum of 2 (two) spare tube
- Mini-tools
- Hand pump, or any kind of portable pump
Bentang Jawa highly recommends that participants use high visibility apparels at all time, especially during dark hours (early morning and/or at night)
All mandatory gears will be checked during race pack collection. If during the competition, any of these mandatory gear is found missing / broken / turned off, then participants will be deemed in violation of rules and automatically scratched from the competition.
