A Call to Faith and Civic Duty
By Jim MacDonald
As election day draws near, anxiety is at its peak across the political spectrum. Many Americans believe that if their side loses, it will mark the end of the nation as we know it. While I don’t subscribe to this extreme view, I do believe that if certain forces prevail, America will face challenging times ahead.
A nation that turns away from God cannot prosper indefinitely. The very God who created the universe also played a role in establishing America as a Christian nation—regardless of what detractors may claim. As John Adams wisely noted, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
Unfortunately, for several generations, We the People have allowed our children to grow up without an understanding of our nation’s founding principles or the numerous ways in which God’s hand shaped our history. Our progressive culture has distorted or erased the miraculous stories that defined America's founding. Our children have been misled into despising the country they are blessed to live in, instead of recognizing the unparalleled freedom and opportunity it offers.
There’s Hope for America by Turning Back to God
Yet, despite the darkness, there is hope. Just as ancient Israel experienced restoration when they turned back to God, I believe the same is possible for America. As Scripture teaches, when God’s people seek His face, turn from their wicked ways, and pursue righteousness, God will heal their land.
Benjamin Franklin once said, “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.” How can a nation as morally corrupt as ours be restored to greatness? The answer is simple, though not easy: We must return to the God-inspired principles found in our Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
These documents are powerful because they are rooted in biblical principles—principles that work every time they are applied. This is why progressives have worked so hard to suppress their teaching. But we can reverse this trend by re-engaging with these founding truths and passing them on to future generations.
Restoring the Republic and the Power of Local Governance
The U.S. Constitution created a unique compound republic, giving us two layers of government—federal and state. Each state is to have its own republican form of governance, with no elite rulers but instead servant leaders. In this structure, God is sovereign, and We the People are entrusted with the responsibility to govern ourselves. Our elected officials are meant to serve the needs of the people, not to rule over us.
Today, this servant-leadership role has been largely forgotten. Many Americans are unaware of how the Constitution limits federal power and how much authority we hold at the state and local levels. Civic engagement is not just a right; it is a duty. This is the true meaning of the phrase “freedom isn’t free.” As Chief Justice John Jay emphasized, “Every member of the State ought diligently to read and to study the constitution of his country, and teach the rising generation to be free. By knowing their rights, they will sooner perceive when they are violated, and be the better prepared to defend and assert them.”
The Path Forward with Education and Action
God established this nation to be a beacon of light for the world. But since we have lost sight of the founding documents, we no longer know how to govern ourselves, and as a result, corrupt leaders have seized control. It is up to God-fearing Americans to seek God's guidance and become well-versed in our founding documents to lead this country back to righteousness.
Programs like Constitution Alive, Biblical Citizenship in Modern America, and Just Say Know are essential for equipping citizens with the knowledge they need to restore our constitutional republic. By understanding the principles of the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence, we can reclaim our rightful role in governance and bring our nation back to God’s design.
Let’s work together to place God back on the throne of our country and take our rightful place at the helm of our government. It starts with knowing and understanding the U.S. Constitution.
