CSI  Lesson Plan   Blks: 5/6/7                         School: JP Elder 044

Date:  Oct 19 to 23, 2020

TEKS: 8.4A TLW collect, analyze, and record information to explain a phenomenon using tools including beakers, petri dishes, dissecting equipment, safety goggles, spring scales, balances, microscopes, computers, computer probes, timing devices, magnets, and compasses

Enduring Understandings: Skeletal remains can be critical in CSI of cold case evidence

Essential Question: how are skeletal remains useful in CSI

Key Concept: Bones tell stories beyond the fact that it is a human, we can determine, gender, age, height, and probable ethnicity

Essential Vocabulary: names and location of all bones in the human body, provided by Carolina Scientific with their models

Brain Activator: Brainpop; skeleton and joints

Instructional Activities: Video presentation of skeletal bones and how to identify them and their function, Youtube videos on the long-bones, and the features which yield the evidence needed for CSI work, work kits from Carolina Scientific which accompany the bones for lab purposes,

We will begin with identification of long bones and where they are located within the body.  Next we will measure a variety of long and determine the height of each “original person” from their long bone with its proper identification.  Once all long bones are identified and heights established, we will move to the Pelvic girdle to determine the gender of the various victims.  Then we will open the study of the Skull and determine ethnicity of the original owners based on data as presented in our lesson documents.  Having established the height and ethnicity of the victim we will move on to odontology.

During this portion of the unit students will ID their own personal “BITE” in a wax piece provided for this purpose form a kit by Carolina Biological supply.  Measuring the required teeth byte and angles that make theirs totally unique, with the new knowledge that in Feb 2016, the federal courts ruled this not admissible as key evidence. This will allow a completed view of the science as used in osteology by forensics experts in modern day cases of missing persons, and grievous assaults.

  1. Who established the measuring system we are using
  2. When di scientist start doing this type of work
  3. When did police begin using it in their cases
  4. Why are we only doing these few parts of the body and not using other bones
  5. How are the various bones reliable in forensic work
  6. Can bones be used for DNA research
  7. What other features or things can be used from bones in forensic work

Assessments: TLW (each student) compose a narrative on how, when, where and why the bones were found based on evidence and data from the packets  This is a 2 week lab set and will culminate in the CSI Semester final at the end of next week
