iPad Responsible Use Policy

Participation in Saint Mark School’s 1:1 iPad program is a privilege provided to the sixth through eighth grade students that has tremendous potential and involves tremendous responsibility.  This agreement, in conjunction with the school’s Parental/Guardian Permission for Access to the Internet, Appropriate Internet Use by Minors Student Contract, and Archdiocesan Acceptable Use Policy and the school handbook, outlines responsible use when using technology resources including, but not limited to, iPads, digital communication, and the internet.  Saint Mark School reserves the right to amend this agreement at any time with or without notices.  Each student must abide by the guidelines set forth in this agreement and given in writing or orally by school faculty and staff.

Knowledgeable and practicing Catholic or Christian

Student action with or without technology should always uphold the mission of Saint Mark School, which includes the charge to “promote respect for self, others and the environment in a safe and supportive Catholic learning community”, and fulfill the student learning expectation that includes making “life choices based on Christian morals and values.”  Saint Mark School also recognizes that personal liberty must be balanced by personal responsibility and individual action by the needs of others. This includes use of the iPad and online behavior.

We expect responsibility and accountability for all actions below:

Usage: During school hours and while on campus, the iPad is intended for educational purposes only.

Messaging, playing games, watching entertainment videos or listening to music are not allowed during class unless approved by the teacher.  Students may not install apps that are not provided by or approved by the school.  Contact Ms. April Saez if you would like to add an app to the approved list for educational purposes.

Class/School Use:  During the school day (including recess and lunch), settings for Facetime, Messaging, Skype, AirDrop etc. must be turned to OFF in the settings, unless you are asked to use them by an instructor.  When in class, it is expected that all students are on task, and faculty have the right to check which apps are open at any time. All apps not assigned by the teacher should be closed.  Violations of these guidelines will result in appropriate disciplinary action.

iTunes Account: Saint Mark School will create and provision each student with an iTunes account that will be associated with all necessary apps and content related to schoolwork.  The school will purchase and distribute all necessary apps for students while enrolled at Saint Mark School.  Your iTunes and email settings should not be altered as this will interfere with academic use of the iPad. Do not use a second iTunes account on this device to load additional content or rename your iPad, as it will interfere with the process of resetting and restoring a disabled iPad.

Photo, Video, and Audio recording: The iPad is a powerful tool with many features installed, including a camera and microphone.  Video and audio capture and photos may only be taken at school under the direction of a teacher. However, at no time, on or off campus, may a student record video or audio, or take photos of anyone (student, teacher, parent, presenter, etc.) without permission from the parties involved. To do so will be considered a serious offense. In addition, students must obtain permission from the parties involved before publishing content in any format.

Storage and Content:  The iPad must only be used to store content related to school.  Inappropriate content should not be accessed, viewed, or stored on the iPad.  The iPad is equipped for communication and students should evaluate whether content or context are appropriate prior to sending any messages or content.  The iPad should be considered an extension of the classroom, and therefore all school and US Federal Rules and Regulations apply.

Software: Students may not use unlicensed software, audio or visual materials.

iCloud and Backup: Because students will have their own iTunes account, we ask that they back-up their iPads to their iCloud accounts. This will enable periodic backups so that if their iPads breaks or is lost, their data is recoverable. Saint Mark School is not responsible for lost work.

Insurance: All iPads provisioned by Saint Mark School are covered by AppleCare+ for the duration of the school year. However, it should be remembered that iPads are delicate and students need to provide ample care for them while using, storing, or transporting.  A case has been provided by the school; removal of the case may nullify any care guaranteed by Apple Care and repair or replacement will become the full financial responsibility of the student.  Loss of the iPad becomes the full financial responsibility of the student.  When not using the iPad at school, students must store them securely within the classroom on top of a desk or within a backpack.  Screens can easily crack within the backpack if too many items are placed with the iPad.

Cracked Screens:  While a case with a cover are provided to reduce the risk of damage to the iPad, students employ care and good judgment when transporting or storing an iPad.  Cracked screens interfere with student learning by making it more difficult to see the required material and make the iPad more prone to malfunction.  Students must immediately report a cracked screen to their homeroom teacher and the Technology Assistant (asaez@stmarkschool.com). Failure to immediately report a cracked screen will result in disciplinary action.  In the event of a cracked screen, a student must turn in his/her iPad to the Technology Assistant for repair, incurring a $50 fee for a first occurrence and $100 fee for each occurrence thereafter.

Lost Device:  In the event that a device gets lost or stolen, it must be reported to the school immediately. Parents/students are responsible for loss or damage to a mobile device.

Charging and Bringing iPads Daily: Students are expected to come to school every day with a fully-charged iPad. Make sure you set up a charging station in your house outside the student’s bedroom that will help you easily charge the device and remember to bring it to school the next day.

Security:  All students are required to lock their iPads with a four digit screen lock code. Share this code with your parents; do not share it with your friends. Do not change it unless you feel it has been compromised (please share a changed screen code with your parents). When you bring your iPad for service, make sure you remove the screen lock in Settings.  You must provide your code to the Director of Educational Technology and report any changes throughout the year.

Projection: Most classrooms will have an AppleTV or other display system so students can project their iPad screens. Students should use this capability with the guidance of a teacher and may not project to any classroom unless instructed to do so by a teacher.

In Summary:

PARENTAL/GUARDIAN’S PERMISSION FOR ACCESS TO THE INTERNET

(signed August 2018)

A safe environment for all members of the community should be the hallmark of Catholic locations that engage in electronic communications. This is accomplished, in part, by fostering a climate based on Gospel values that emphasizes the dignity of and respect for all persons. Words, actions, or depictions which violate the privacy, safety, or good name of others are inconsistent with that goal.

This policy applies to all communications, attachments or depictions through email, text messages, social media or website postings, whether they occur on the location’s network or through private communications, which:

(1) threaten, libel, slander, malign, disparage, harass or embarrass members of the community;

(2) are of a sexual nature; or

(3) in the discretion of the person in charge cause harm to the location or their communities (“Inappropriate Electronic Conduct”).

Inappropriate Electronic Conduct shall be subject to the full range of disciplinary consequences.  The school principal (for school matters), the pastor, priest administrator or parish life director (for parish activities) or the person in charge (for other locations) shall investigate and act upon all reported or observed instances of Inappropriate Electronic Conduct.

Students, parents/guardians, members of the location staff and volunteers are expected to report promptly to the person in charge all suspected or observed instances of Inappropriate Electronic Conduct.

The location at any time may add additional rules and restrictions. The location has the right to monitor all use of electronic communications as set forth in the Archdiocesan Acceptable Use and Responsibility Policy for Electronic Communications (“Archdiocesan AUP”).

I hereby release Saint Mark School and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, its personnel and any other institutions with which it is affiliated, from any and all claims and damages of any nature arising from my child’s use of, or inability to use, the internet, including, but not limited to claims that may arise from the unauthorized use of the system to purchase products or services.

I will instruct my child regarding Inappropriate Electronic Conduct. I will emphasize to my child the importance of following the rules for personal safety. As the parent/guardian of this student, I have read the Archdiocesan Acceptable Use and Responsibility Policy for Electronic Communications and any supplemental local policy, if applicable. I hereby give my permission for my child to use the internet, subject to those policies and will not hold Saint Mark School or the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles liable as a result of my child’s use of the internet on school premises. I understand that my child has agreed not to access inappropriate material on the internet.

Appropriate Internet Use by Minors - Student Contract

The Internet is a place where I go to learn, meet friends and play games. I know that through the Internet I can reach all sorts of people all over the world who are of good will and who, like me, sign on to the Internet to share ideas, feelings and what we’ve discovered about ourselves and the world around us.  It’s a place where I can be myself or sometimes pretend to be someone else.  I can have deep discussions or let my imagination roam.  I can be creative and do serious work.  But I also know that the Internet can be a place where I can get lost, waste time and sometimes say or do things that I shouldn’t. It’s also a place where I need to be careful about people who could harm me.

Because I want to be the best person I can be and live my life as a friend of Jesus, I promise to abide by the following rules:

I understand that if I violate any of these rules, I may be disciplined by:
