Physical Education

Our goal as physical education/wellness professionals is to ensure students with the “best practices” toward developmentally appropriate instruction related to physical activity and health. By providing students with a program that develops the knowledge and skills for a healthy lifestyle, students will have the highest potential for life-long well-being. In order for students to obtain their full potential, the physical education teachers strive to provide students with age appropriate knowledge and skills about movement/fitness activities. The teachers develop their grade level curriculum and daily lessons by staying current with researched-based instruction. Of course, modeling appropriate fitness activities/skills and health practices are effective for student learning too. The key to learning new skills is appropriate practice. Providing students with high percentages of engaged daily physical activity is not only important to mastering skills, but also to the students’ overall personal well-being. Using a “Multiple Intelligence” approach to learning allows kinesthetic learners to thrive and feel confident about their own skill development. In order for students to improve their mastery of skills/activities, it’s critical that appropriate assessment yields information about the student’s progress towards their personal learning goals. The FitnessGram assessment provides health related data that students and parents can use to remediate or enrich their child’s personal health goals. In addition, daily formative assessment by the physical education teacher allows for immediate skill correction. The physical education program strives to provide a safe environment for learning, problem solving, teamwork and practicing skills. In order for students to have the best possible instruction, physical education teachers are provided quality professional learning that is relevant and purposeful, which in turn maximizes student achievement and the life-long enjoyment of physical activity for all students.
