STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS FOR THE OPEN STUDIOS ART TOUR

Successful artists are actively engaged in self promotion. Here are some strategies to increase the number of visitors to your studio and improve the prospect of selling your work.

1. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EVERY SELF PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY!

Sign up to exhibit your work in the OSAT display at the Butte County Public Library. Only 3 artists during the month of October will have the opportunity to display their work at the library.

Carefully select your art work submission for the OSAT gallery exhibition. The piece you exhibit is your first opportunity to inspire people to visit your studio. People love to “discover artists” new to them. Consider selecting a work different than the one in the tour guide, especially if you have different series or work in more than one medium.

Join the CAC/OSAT promotional media campaign. Contact us if you would like to be featured on a radio or television interview or in the print media.

2. SEND OUT INVITATIONS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. *Personal relationships are the foundation for sales.

a. Send a mail or email invitation.

Invite everyone on your studio guest list, past and current patrons, your friends, and professional contacts like your doctor, dentist, financial adviser, teachers, realtor etc. Forward CAC’s email announcements to friends and associates. Ask them to “make a date for art” with you so you can share what’s new in your studio, or announce a demo you will be giving. Include an image or two of your studio and artwork to make them curious and eager to visit your studio.  Include the CAC website /OSAT link. Because they know you, they are more likely to come.

b. Make a flyer using images of your work and the email invitation content.

Include the CAC website so they can learn more about OSAT, where to buy a tour guide, and how to get the link to your personal OSAT studio website. Take it to all the professional offices where you do business, including schools, and ask them to post it in their employee lunch rooms.

c. Friends can be patrons too.

We typically invite our friends over for dinner and not to see our artwork. So this is a great opportunity to treat them like art enthusiasts. Often friends become our best patrons or the best salespeople of our work.

3. ASK YOUR FRIENDS FOR SUPPORT

Friends are often the best promoters of your work!  Ask 5-10 friends to post your studio flyer at their workplaces.

4. MAIL AND GIVE AWAY OSAT POSTCARDS.

Print your name and studio # and ask them to “make a date for art” with YOU.  The OSAT card will tell your recipients all they need to know to buy a tour guide and join the OSAT fun.

5. MAKE SOCIAL MEDIA WORK FOR YOU.

In the weeks before OSAT, keep posting images of your beautiful work and comments on Facebook, Instagram etc. Draw art appreciators and patrons to your studio and give them the incentive to join OSAT this year! While CAC will cover the platforms like radio PSA’s, local radio show features, newspaper ads and articles, bank and business displays, posters, postcards, social media platforms and email announcements, your personal outreach is very effective in doubling outreach efforts and establishing familiar connections specific to your audience.

a. Embrace the Hashtag

Descriptive hashtags on Instagram will help expose your content to more people. Adding hashtags (#) is a great way to get new followers and share your photos with more people.

To mention a friend in your caption, type @ in front of their username (e.g., “great article, @digitaltrends!”). Your friend will then receive a notification in their activity feed letting them know that you mentioned them. You can also mention people in comments.

Take advantage of CAC’s 1400 followers by including @Chico_Art_Center and #chicoartcenter in your OSAT posts. Your posts will alert our followers as well as pop up when anyone searches for anything to do with“chico” or “art”.

#ChicoCA #ButteStrong #OSAT #OSAT2020 #OpenStudios #OpenStudiosArtTour #gifts #holiday #painting #sculpture #jewelry etc….

b. Your Followers See Your Likes

If you “like” or “heart" your fellow OSAT artists' posts, your followers can see your fellow artists @handles and start to follow them, and vice versa. This creates cross promotion among a community of Chico art lovers. Try it!

c. Don’t Forget the Details

Remember to always include the dates of the Tour on all of your promotions and where to buy tour guides. Lastly, the better your photos are, the more you increase your visibility, professionalism and quality of your artwork. Go get ‘em artists!
