HISTORICAL SKETCH.
Saint Joseph’s Academy of Seton Hill was established by the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in 1883. Housed in the former Stokes Mansion, Sister Adelaide Dunn served as its first Directress until 1894. When the Administration building opened in 1889, the Academy had grown from the first year of seven pupils to over fifty. The Academy, as was the general rule in the 1880s, followed the “finishing school” course of study, “with great stress laid upon literature and history, modern languages and music. Mathematics received less emphasis; science ... had small part in any curriculum, even in the universities. Needle-work, drawing and water-color painting, training in speech and social behavior were indispensable accomplishments of the educated young woman.”
Saint Joseph Academy provided such an education in its early years, with the addition of Church history, logic and introductory philosophy. Sister Rose Marie Maher became the Directress in 1894. She introduced first the three year, then the four year high school course, which placed the Academy in a leadership position in Western Pennsylvania. Her successor, Sister Borgia Casey, reorganized the faculty, the course of study, and implemented the college entrance examination as a requisite for graduation. With the establishment of Seton Hill College in 1918, many changes were necessary. It was essential for the Academy and the College to be totally separated. As a result, many of the teachers with years of experience were placed in the College, and less experienced one assigned to the Academy. The College needed more advanced science labs, a larger library, more classroom space. By 1947, it was the attitude of many educators in accrediting bodies that a college could not coexist with a high or elementary school. While this was certainly the major factor in the decision to suspend the operation of the Academy, it was also felt, as the College continued to grow, that the physical plant could no longer serve both. As a result, the Academy was phased out, with the last class graduating in 1947. However, as there was no other summer school for high schoolers in the area, the Academy continued to offer summer school until 1959, when that too was discontinued.
(from Mother Seton’s Sisters of Charity in Western Pennsylvania)
For an indepth history of St. Joseph Academy, as well as St. Mary’s Preparatory School for Young Boys, Seton Hill Junior College and Seton Hill College, see Mother Seton’s Sisters of Charity in Western Pennsylvania by Sister Mary Electa Boyle (1946) for the history of the Seton Hill Schools from their founding through the early 1940s.
