Our Community

Neighborhood Enrollment

Centennial is neighborhood school first. As such, admission is open on a rolling and unlimited basis to all families who reside within the school’s mandated attendance zone, which consists of Centennial Place, Atlantic Station, Castleberry Hill, Downtown Atlanta Corridor, Home Park, Howell Station, and West Marietta Street in addition to the Atlanta Union Mission, Salvation Army, and My Sister’s House homeless shelters.

Charter Enrollment

Families who reside outside of the mandated zone but who live within the Atlanta Public Schools district, may apply for entry into our randomized lottery process and will be admitted in wait list order only as space permits within the determined enrollment cap.

Community Partnerships

North of downtown and neighbors with world­-class institutions, an essential element of the Centennial model is the cultivation of a strong network of community partners. Centennial has been strategic about using corporate and non-profit partnerships to unite around common educational goals. Our partnership efforts provide tangible, hands-on learning experiences and support school-wide events and professional development opportunities that enhance scholar outcomes and school and professional culture. Centennial Academy’s partners in education include:

Community Affiliations

Centennial also maintains a strong relationship with The Coca Cola Company, which is located directly across the street from the school. Coca Cola sponsors the school’s annual iNspire Educators Banquet at Coca Cola and provides eighth grade apprenticeships, and volunteers for school events and charities.

Centennial also engages with various mentoring, learning enhancement and athletic programs such as Everybody Wins Mentoring, A+ Squash, and FCA Atlanta Urban Baseball.

General Information

ENROLLMENT AND REGISTRATION

Enrollment Policies and Procedures

Centennial will continue to comply with the open enrollment and admissions provisions set forth in O.C.G.A. 20-2-2066 and does not discriminate against any scholar on the basis of disability, gender, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation. All admission and registration deadline dates and target enrollment numbers are set by the Enrollment Department and approved by the Head of School annually. The dates are placed on Centennial’s website and on all admission application materials. The dates are also prominently placed around the school. The application is available online and can be accessed in the Enrollment Office.

The open enrollment period runs from early February to mid-March of each year to allow ample time to re-enroll returning scholars and account for any new, in-zone scholars. Families wishing to return must notify the Enrollment Department by the end of February and provide proof of residency in accordance with APS district policies. Since Centennial also serves as the neighborhood school for families living in the school’s mandated primary attendance zone, which consists of Centennial Place, Atlantic Station, Castleberry Hill, Downtown Atlanta Corridor, Home Park, Howell Station, and West Marietta Street in addition to the Atlanta Union Mission, Salvation Army, and My Sister’s House homeless shelters, the mandated attendance zone is the top enrollment priority and families residing in these neighborhoods can enroll their children at any time during the school year.

All scholars who reside outside of the mandated primary attendance zone, but within the boundaries of APS (unless the child of teacher, staff or board member), are considered out-of-zone. Any out-of-zone scholar, inclusive of the child of a teacher, staff or board member, that does not indicate an intent to re-enroll by the stated deadline will lose their seat for the following year. In the event that an out-of-zone family wishes to re-enroll after the deadline, they will have to reapply for admission via the school’s lottery.

During open enrollment, Centennial will accept applications from new out-of-zone families. Because the school maintains a mandated attendance zone (in-zone), it assumes there will be more applicants than spaces available for each grade level. Therefore, the names of scholars who submitted an application by the deadline are placed in a randomized lottery for the requested grade level to be conducted in March of each year.

Section I: Annual Enrollment Process Overview

Enrollment is handled as a four-step process:

Step 1 (on-going): Enroll scholars who reside within the Centennial Academy mandated primary attendance zone.

Step 2: Re-enroll current scholars via the Intent to Re-Enroll Form.  (See Section II below.)

Step 3: Enroll siblings and children of staff/board members. (See Section III below.)

Step 4: Open enrollment for scholars who reside outside of the mandated primary zone and within the Atlanta Public Schools attendance zone. (See Section IV below.)

Section II: Re-Enrollment

  1. Current Centennial Academy families are sent an Intent to Re-Enroll Form on February 1st. The form must be returned by the deadline and families must verify census and residency information.
  2. Families residing outside of the Centennial Academy mandated attendance zone are eligible for the Out-of-Zone School Choice Permit as a result of Centennial Academy’s Charter Agreement. All families must maintain residency within the Atlanta Public Schools attendance zone in order to maintain enrollment at Centennial Academy.
  3. Out-of-zone families who do not return the Intent to Return Form by the stated deadline will lose their scholar’s seat. In the event that the family wishes to re-enroll after the deadline, then the family will have to reapply for admission via the school’s lottery.
  4. Families who move outside of the Atlanta Public Schools attendance zone are no longer eligible for enrollment and must immediately withdraw their scholar(s).
  5. Families who are currently in transition may not automatically re-enroll and must verify transition status at the beginning of every school year per the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (Act), 42 U.S.C. Section 11434a (2) et.seq.
  6. If false information is provided, or the circumstance under which enrollment was granted has changed, enrollment may be revoked.
  7. Failure to comply with any provision of the Re-Enrollment Policy shall authorize the school to withdraw such scholar and/or deem the scholar in-eligible for re-enrollment.

Section III: Enrollment of Siblings and Children of Staff/Board Members

  1. Current Centennial Academy families indicate on the re-enrollment paperwork if a sibling will be entering Centennial Academy for the following school year.
  2. Children of current full-time staff members or current board members who are enrolling for the first time must indicate their intention to enroll the child by submitting a completed enrollment application form by the stated deadline. *Full-time staff members or current board members must be the custodial parent/legal guardian/step-parent with whom the child is domiciled and may live outside of the APS District. In the event the employment contract ends, the children may remain only if the former staff member maintains residency in the APS District.
  3. If false information is provided, or the circumstance under which enrollment was granted has changed, enrollment may be revoked.
  4. Failure to comply with any provision of the Enrollment Policy shall authorize the school to withdraw such scholar and/or deem the scholar in-eligible for re-enrollment.

Section IV: Open Enrollment/Lottery

  1. Families residing outside of the Centennial Academy mandated attendance zone are eligible for the Out-of-Zone School Choice Permit as a result of Centennial Academy’s Charter Agreement. All families must maintain residency within the Atlanta Public Schools attendance zone in order to maintain enrollment at Centennial Academy.
  2. The online enrollment application is posted on the Centennial Academy website on February 1st.
  3. Prospective families must complete the online enrollment application in order to receive a lottery number. Computer assistance will be available to complete the online application, if needed.
  4. Children who matriculate from a pre-kindergarten program which is associated with the school, including, but not limited to, programs with share common facilities or campuses with the school or programs which have established a partnership or cooperative efforts with the school must submit a completed enrollment application form by the stated deadline and will receive enrollment priority via the lottery as stated in Centennial Academy’s Charter Contract.
  5. After open enrollment closes, Centennial Academy will hold a lottery at the school. The lottery is public and all interested parties are invited to attend. Families are not required to attend the lottery drawing.
  6. Centennial Academy will utilize an online lottery application to determine each prospective scholar’s placement for enrollment or wait list for their grade level. All prospective scholars will either be placed for enrollment or assigned to the waitlist.
  7. All families will receive an email through the online lottery application indicating their lottery status. If a prospective scholar was placed for enrollment, then the family will either ACCEPT or DENY the placement within 7 business days.
  8. All families that accept their placement must submit registration and residency verification paperwork by the deadline before a scholar is confirmed for enrollment and class assignment.
  9. Transportation for scholars enrolled via the lottery must be provided by the parent/guardian.
  10. Acceptable attendance and behavior are required in order for lottery admitted scholars to remain eligible for enrollment as noted below:

A scholar’s enrollment is valid through the completion of the highest grade of the school but may be rescinded at any time for the following reasons:

  1. The parent/guardian is expected to maintain a cordial and cooperative working relationship with school personnel.
  2. If false information is provided, or the circumstance under which enrollment was granted has changed, enrollment may be revoked.
  3. Failure to comply with any provision of the Open Enrollment/Lottery Policy shall authorize the school to withdraw such scholar and/or deem the scholar in-eligible for re-enrollment.

Section V: Wait List

  1. Prospective families are notified via email if they have an opportunity to move off the waitlist and offered the ability to enroll. Parents have 48 business hours to accept their child’s placement.
  2. Once the placement is accepted, the family must complete registration and residency verification paperwork.
  3. Centennial Academy may offer scholars a position up until the last day of the first semester in the applicable school year.
  4. A new wait list is formed for each grade level following the lottery process each school year.

Section VI: Proof of Residency Requirements

  1. Centennial Academy follows the most current residency requirements of Atlanta Public Schools.
  2. All new scholars and re-enrolling upcoming 6th graders must submit residency verification paperwork.
  3. If Centennial Academy receives returned mail for a scholar, then updated residency verification paperwork will be required.
  4. All families must maintain residency within the Atlanta Public Schools attendance zone in order to maintain enrollment at Centennial Academy.
  5. If false information is provided, enrollment may be revoked.
  6. Failure to comply with any provision of the Enrollment and Proof of Residency Requirements shall authorize the school to withdraw such scholar and/or deem the scholar in-eligible for re-enrollment.

Withdrawal

If it is necessary to withdraw your child from Centennial Academy, please adhere to the following protocols.

  1. Notify the Enrollment office of your withdrawal date as soon as you are aware. Please indicate a specific withdrawal date on the withdrawal form.
  2. Return all classroom books and technology to the teacher.
  3. Return all books and materials to the media center.
  4. Return all uniforms to the uniform bank.

There will be a 48 hour turnaround time to receive your withdrawal packet from the Enrollment Department.

ATTENDANCE POLICY 

Scholars are expected to be present and on time to school in accordance with the provision of the Georgia Compulsory Attendance Law (O.C.G.A. 202690.1, et seq.) and Centennial Academy Policy. Scholars who are absent or tardy miss valuable instructional time and other important school activities and are less likely to master those skills, concepts, and principles needed for success. Excessive unexcused absences and/or truancy may lead to legal action against the parent/guardian in addition to a review of the scholar’s enrollment status.

When a scholar is absent, he/she must bring a note to school signed by the parent/legal guardian or physician stating the reason for the absence.  The note must be given to the Hero Desk Receptionist within 48 hours of returning to school. An excused absence does not exempt a scholar from being marked absent. An excused absence may prevent the school from seeking legal action should the scholar miss 10 or more days. Teachers will provide make-up work and scholars will be allowed up to 3 days to complete the assignments without penalty.

At Centennial Academy, the school day begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. All scholars are required to report to school and all classes daily on time every day. On time scholars are present in their classroom ready to receive instruction at 8:00 am. Any scholar who arrives to class after 8:01 a.m. is considered to be tardy and will be recorded as such. When a scholar is tardy to school, they must be escorted to the Hero Desk by their parent to receive a tardy slip.

In order to manage and maintain optimal scholar attendance, Centennial Academy will use both positive reinforcement and progressive discipline measures to address tardiness and absenteeism.  Positive incentives will be awarded to scholars who maintain good attendance over specified periods of time.  At the same time, the progressive discipline policy outlined below will be used. Please note, acceptable attendance, behavior, and grades are required in order for scholars to remain eligible for enrollment.

Please note the following definitions for the attendance policy:

Excused:

Absences due to:

a. Personal illness of the student or when attendance in school would endanger the health of the student or the health of others. Upon the student’s return to school, appropriate medical documentation may be required within three days of the absence

b. Serious illness or death in student’s immediate family necessitating the absence. In the case of serious illness, students are required to present medical documentation to validate the absences as an excused absence within three days of the student’s return to school.

c. Court order by a governmental agency mandating the student’s absence from school.

d. Special or recognized religious holidays observed by the faith of the student.

e. Weather or environmental conditions rendering attendance impossible or hazardous to the student’s health or safety.

f. An absence not to exceed one (1) day for registering to vote.

g. Other absences to be determined by, and at the discretion of, the local school

Unexcused:

a. Failure to attend school, with or without the knowledge of the parent/legal guardian, for reasons

other than those specifically outlined as excused absences.

b. School days missed as a result of an out of school suspension shall not be counted as unexcused  for the purpose of determining truancy.

Tardy to School

Parents must escort scholars into building.

10 tardies:

  • Out of Zone Revocation

15 tardies:

  • Parent meeting with school leadership
  • DFCS Referral

 

Absent to School

(Excuse for absence must be sent to Hero Desk within 48 hours of returning to school.)

Excused Absences

  • Personal illness of scholar and when attendance in school would endanger the health of the scholar or the health of others.  Upon the scholar’s return to school, appropriate medical documentation may be required.
  • Quarantine either by the county health department or by the family’s physician
  • Medical or dental appointments with verifications; however, such nonemergency appointments are encouraged during nonschool hours whenever possible
  • Special and recognized religious holidays observed by the scholar
  • Administrative early release
  • Court proceedings

Absences

Attendance Interventions

10 or more absences

A certified letter is mailed to parent(s)/guardian(s) notifying them that their child has at least ten absences, reminding them of possible penalties/consequences of misdemeanor violation (in accordance with the Compulsory School Attendance Law, and requesting a meeting with the Head of Elementary or Head of Middle School Divisions. Scholar residency will be reviewed and the revocation process will begin for any out of zone scholars. Department of Family and Children Services will be contacted.

*Excused absences will be reviewed and a determination will be made if those absences are subject to unexcused absence protocols.

Acceptable attendance, behavior, and grades are required in order for scholars to remain eligible for enrollment.

SCHOOL SCHEDULE AND TARDY PROCEDURES:

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

Arrival Procedures

Our instructional day begins promptly at 8:00 am; however, our building opens each morning at 7:15 am. Whenever possible, please allow your child to ride the bus to school. This helps with traffic congestion around the school in the mornings. If you must bring your children to school, you may not drop them off at the front door any earlier than 7:15 am. In order to ensure the safety of all scholars and to assist with the flow of traffic, we ask that children not be dropped off at any other entrance to the school. For the safety of all scholars, please stay in line and do not go around any car or cars in front of you. All scholars should exit the car from the passenger side of the car so scholars are not walking between cars. Once entering the school building, Elementary School scholars will report to the cafeteria. All Middle School scholars will report to the Y’Cafe. All scholars will be dismissed to their homeroom classrooms beginning at 7:30 am.

Teachers arrive each morning at 7:30 am. Teachers are required to begin duties and monitor scholars between 7:30 am­ & 7:50 am. Teachers have been instructed not to hold individual parent conferences during this critical intake period. The school requires all parents wishing to conference with a teacher to schedule a parent­-teacher conference with the individual teacher. If parents are trying to notify the teacher of an afternoon dismissal change, early dismissal or other information, please do so by completing the appropriate form or including a note in the child’s folder and/or submit a change to the Hero desk.

*For the safety and security of our scholars, parents are not allowed to alter or interrupt the flow of the intake process, i.e. parking in the carpool line, escorting scholars into the building during the scholar intake period or disobeying the agreed upon transportation route during the arrival time, etc.

Dismissal Procedures

If your child is a walker, they will be dismissed in the first group in one of two ways. Scholars in grades 3-8 will be dismissed and allowed to walk out on their own. Scholars in grades K­-2 will be dismissed from their class once the parent/guardian presents our staff member with their assigned dismissal number. When the (K­-2) scholars arrive at the walker exit, a staff member will log their arrival. It is important that all parents remain orderly, wait in line, and cooperate with all staff members to ensure a safe and effective dismissal.

If your child is a car rider, they will be dismissed upon the arrival of a parent/guardian beginning at 3:00 pm for Elementary School.  All Middle School Car Riders will be dismissed at 3:35 pm. Car Riders in grades K-4 will be dismissed to the Yellow Zone at the front of the building.  If your Elementary School scholar has an older sibling in Middle School, they will be picked up in the Yellow Zone at 3:35 pm.

Van riders will be dismissed upon the arrival of the After School Program Vans.

If your child is a Bus Rider, they will be dismissed at 3:25 pm in Elementary School and 3:30 in Middle School. Elementary School scholars will have their dismissal from class logged by their classroom teacher and their entry onto the bus recorded by a school staff member assigned to their bus. Buses should leave the school at approximately 3:35pm.

Elementary School Dismissal

Dismissal for Elementary School (K-4) begins at 3:00 pm daily. If you are picking up your child through Car Pool, you MUST have a Centennial Car Pool Tag with you. The dismissal number needs to be visible so that the people entering the names in our Silent Dismissal System can do this accurately and efficiently. Car Pool ends at 3:30 pm for Elementary School scholars.

Any parent who arrives prior to 3:00 pm should wait in their car or in the designated walker waiting area.  Parents are not allowed to enter the building during dismissal as this causes a safety concern for our scholars and is disruptive to the dismissal process. All scholars will remain in their homerooms until their group or number is submitted. We utilize an electronic dismissal system allowing us to be more efficient and accountable for how scholars are dismissed. Every scholar in the school will be assigned a dismissal number.

Elementary School Scholars will be dismissed in the following order:

  1. Walkers
  2. Car Riders
  3. Van Riders
  4. YMCA
  5. Clubs /Special Activities
  6. Bus Riders

Middle School Dismissal  

Dismissal for Middle School (5-8) begins at 3:30 pm and will take place in the rear of the building (Blue Zone.) Carpool ends at 3:45 pm for Middle School scholars. Middle School car riders with Elementary siblings will be released to the Yellow Zone at 3:30.

Middle School Scholars will be dismissed in the following order:

  1. Bus Riders/Car Riders with siblings in the Elementary Division
  2. Walkers
  3. Van Riders/Martin Luther King
  4. Boys and Girls Club
  5. YMCA
  6. Clubs /Special Activities
  7. Car Riders

The administrator on duty will attempt to contact a parent and/or emergency contact at 3:30 pm for Elementary Scholars and 3:45 pm for Middle School Scholars. If contact is not made within 30 minutes, then the administrator will call the Atlanta Police Department who will make a determination if the situation warrants child abandonment and an appropriate call will be made to the Department of Family and Children Services.

An accumulation of three late pick ups may result in enrollment revocation for out of zone scholars. In zone scholars that have accumulated three late pick ups will be asked to show proof of enrollment in an approved after-school program (Arthur Blank YMCA, MLK Center, or Boys & Girls Club).

*For the safety and security of our scholars, parents are not allowed to alter or interrupt the flow of the dismissal process, i.e. removing scholars from the line, instructing scholars to disobey the agreed upon transportation route during the dismissal time, etc.

Authorization to Release Form

Enrolling parents are required to complete the Authorization to Release Form to specifically identify individuals that have permission to pick up your scholar from school. Persons will be required to provide their state­ issued identification card prior to the scholar’s release. Please note ­the identification card will be copied for our records. If the individual is not listed on the Authorization to Release Form, then scholars will not be released. In addition, it is the enrolling parent’s responsibility to update the Authorization to Release Form as soon as there is a change.

Dismissal Changes

Parents wishing to change a scholar’s afternoon transportation route are required to complete a Change of Transportation Form in advance. On the morning that your scholar requires a transportation change, please send a completed Transportation Change form in your scholar’s folder. Changes will only be honored if they are sent in writing. Please note that if the transportation change requires a person other than the parent or guardian to pick up, the designee may not sign a scholar out unless they are listed on the Authorization to Release Form and will be required to present a valid driver’s licenses. Dismissal changes must be submitted by 1 pm.

Early Dismissal

Parents wishing to pick up scholars prior to the end of the school day (3:00 pm - Elementary School; 3:30 pm - Middle School) are required to sign scholars out at the Hero Desk for early dismissal. Early Dismissals must be arranged in advance. On the morning that your scholar requires an early dismissal, please submit an Early Dismissal Request form to the Hero Desk with the name of the person who will pick your child up. We will arrange for your child to be waiting in the front atrium for pickup. Early Dismissals will only be granted between the hours of 11:30 am and 2:15 pm. Dismissals prior to 11:30 am will result in your scholar being marked absent for the day. Please note: In order to ensure the safety and proper dismissal of our scholars, Centennial Academy’s Hero desk will close daily from 2:45 pm until 3:30 pm.

Teachers will not release scholars from classrooms without an early dismissal pass. Anyone other than a parent or guardian may not sign a scholar out unless they are listed on the Authorization to Release Form and they must present a valid driver’s license or state issued identification prior to the scholar’s release. When scholars are dismissed early from school, they miss important instructional time. Parents should avoid habitually checking scholars out from school early. The school will monitor instructional time and will consult with families should habitual early dismissal interfere with academic progress or the orderly operation of the school day.

Hero Desk

The Hero Desk is open Monday - Friday from 7:15 am - 4:15 pm. However, in order to ensure the safety and proper dismissal of our scholars, the desk will close daily from 2:45 pm until 3:30 pm.

Enrollment Office

The Enrollment Office is open Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 2:00 pm. Families that register will receive a schedule and teacher placement within 24 business hours. Newly enrolled scholars will start the next business day with the exception of Friday. Internal and external media may frequently showcase school events and activities. If a parent prefers for his/her child to not be on television, the school’s website, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube) or photographed, you must submit a request in writing to the school office.

This is the source for parent contact information and how the school communicates to families both general and critical school information. Contacting Your Scholar’s Teacher

If a parent/guardian would like to discuss a matter with any staff member, the following procedures should be followed:

  1. The parent/guardian should call or email the teacher and expect a response within 2 business days after initiating the communication.
  2. If a face to face conference is required please make sure the requested time is two (2) business days in advance.
  3. The parent/guardian must report to the Hero Desk at the time of the agreed appointment and the main office staff will provide a visitor’s pass and notify the faculty member.

4.  Parents should not report directly to the classroom in order to minimize disruptions to the learning environment. (Please refer to the School Visitation Policy on Page 29)

Addressing Concerns/Protocols

A high quality educational program for scholars at Centennial Academy can be achieved when all parties to the educational experience (parents, staff and scholars) work together cooperatively. There will be times, however, when a parent or scholar would like to express a concern or complaint about his or her experience. These questions are best expressed and resolved within the school, directly with the staff member(s) involved or affected. The following protocol should be followed when addressing specific concerns; however, when this process seems to fail at providing a satisfactory resolution, a parent or scholar may seek further review and counsel by the school’s Board of Directors following Grievance Policy and Procedures (page 26).

Centennial Academy Grievance Policy and Procedures

The Centennial Academy Grievance Policy is established to address complaints or concerns associated with the school, the school community, and its Board of Directors. The policy is established to set clear guidelines on how to address complaints to ensure they are dealt with fairly, consistently, and timely.

Any grievance at the school will fall into one of three primary categories:

  1. Complaints about a scholar, the classroom experience, or with a teacher.
  2. Complaints or concerns about a school­ policy or administration.
  3. Complaints or concerns about a parent or community member involved with the school.

As often as possible, the issue should be brought forth as close to the origin of the grievance.

For a complaint about a scholar, the classroom experience, or a teacher:

  1. Individuals should first seek to resolve the issue with the classroom teacher.
  2. If a resolution is not reached after a discussion with the classroom teacher, the individual pursuing the grievance should seek to resolve the issue with the appropriate administrator within either the Elementary or Middle School Division as follows:

The grievance should be acknowledged via written response within 2-5 business days with a final response within 10 business days.

  1. If resolution with the above is not feasible or efforts to resolve the issue have been exhausted, then the individual should bring the grievance to the attention of the Head of School.
  2. If resolution with the Head of School is not feasible or efforts to resolve the issue have been exhausted, then the individual should bring the grievance to the attention of the Governing Board. Procedures for bringing a grievance to the governing board are below.

For a complaint or concern about a school policy or administration:

  1. Once all efforts to resolve an issue have been exhausted with the school’s staff and other school leadership, then an individual may bring a grievance to the attention of the Head of School. The grievance should be acknowledged via written response within 2-5 business days and final resolution provided via written response within 10 business days.

Title I

Centennial Academy has been identified as a Title I School. Title I is designed to support state and local school reform efforts tied to challenging state academic standards in order to reinforce and enhance efforts to improve teaching and learning for scholars. SCHOOL VISITATION POLICY

 

Centennial Academy not only welcomes, but also encourages its parents and other stakeholders to be involved in and to support the school’s educational program and activities. While stakeholders are welcome at the school to observe and learn about the educational program, the paramount concern of the school is to provide a safe, orderly and inviting learning environment in which disruptions to instructional time are minimized and in which staff are able to perform their professional responsibility of managing the safety and professional environment for 800+ scholars, each other, and the visitors who we aim to warmly and graciously welcome.

 

To pull this off, we must be mindful that certain activities require the full attention of teachers and all staff as well as scholars. In an institution like ours, we will always have unexpected visits and these have to be well managed because an uninvited guest is not always unwelcomed but always poses a potential threat to the safety of our scholars and professionals. We try to vet these visitors as warmly as possible but even that requires certain cooperation from our most frequent and most welcomed visitors, our parents.

 

Unmanaged visits, even by parents, can hamper the educational experience and present unsafe conditions; it can distract us, causing us and scholars to not readily recognize strangers, suspicious activity or danger. To encourage involvement and engagement from parents and other stakeholders in a way that can be well received and enjoyed by all parties – scholars, visitors, teachers and other staff – the following protocols and opportunities are provided to ensure a positive visit to the school.

WHEN THINGS COME UP

Visitors may visit the school for other reasons, even those that are positive impromptu occasions or unfortunate emergency situations. In all cases when permission is not obtained in advance, permission must be obtained by reporting to the Hero Desk to seek the clearance and approval in order to ensure the safety and unhampered learning and professional environment for our scholars and staff.

 If a parent wishes to celebrate their child’s birthday at school, the following protocol must be followed:

Volunteering and Chaperoning

Centennial Academy encourages all parents to volunteer at least once a month. There are many different standing and special volunteer activities that will be advertised in the weekly parent bulletins. Parent volunteers can assist in classrooms, common areas, cafeteria, playground, building entrances, etc.

Volunteers (all non-­staff members that assist scholars, including parents) must participate in a screening process. Anyone that comes in direct contact with scholars must complete the APS Volunteer Release Form and submit a copy of their state ID. This form gives permission to check volunteers against the State and Federal Registered Sex Offender registries. This check takes approximately one day to complete.

Parents wishing to accompany scholars on field trips must be cleared as a registered volunteer and have completed the mandatory chaperone training prior to the date of the trip. Chaperone trainings will be offered twice a month during the academic year.

Mandatory Reporting

All school personnel and volunteers are mandated reporters of suspected abuse and/or neglect of scholars. Mandated reporters are required to report suspected child maltreatment immediately when they “have reasonable cause to believe that a child who is under 18 years of age known to them in a professional or official capacity has been harmed or is in danger of being harmed physically, sexually, or through neglect and that a caregiver either committed the harm or should have taken steps to prevent the child from harm.”

Money and Valuables

Scholars should not bring money, property, or other values to school, except to purchase items from the cafeteria or to pay for field trips and/or other classroom fees. Money should be sent in a sealed and labeled envelope. If money is required for other reasons, scholars and parents will be notified. The school will not assume the responsibility for any lost or stolen items.

While it is the responsibility of the scholar to secure and maintain the safety and control of any and all of their personal valuables, the school will hold a scholar accountable for any deliberate theft or misuse of another scholar’s property. Scholars are not allowed to sell items or solicit funds of any kind unless it is done as a part of a school sanctioned club or activity.  

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Centennial Academy teachers will review emergency procedures with scholars at the beginning of the year and periodically throughout the year. Every instructional area in the building has an evacuation route posted and scholars practice evacuation routes for different scenarios periodically during the school year.

Inclement Weather and Other Environmental Conditions

In the event of inclement weather or other environmental conditions impacting the school community, a decision about whether school will have a delayed opening or be closed as soon as possible and no later than 5:00 am on the day of such delay or closure. Notification will be publicized using several media outlets, WSB­TV ­Channel 2, Centennial Academy Website (www.centennialacademycharter.org), Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), Robo-calls, Emails, and Text Messages. To ensure that school communication is received, it is encouraged to periodically update your contact information in Infinite Campus.

Centennial Academy and APS Decisions

Please follow the decision and instructions shared directly by Centennial Academy and NOT by APS. As a conversion charter school, Centennial Academy is able to base its decisions about school opening and closure, using specific information that applies particularly to the school, including conditions as relates to its particular scholars’ and staff geographic location and condition as well as the school’s unique challenges and conditions on and surrounding the campus grounds. Therefore, the school does not necessarily follow the decisions that APS will make, which, unlike for Centennial Academy, must be  based on the collective conditions of the district’s multitude of schools. However, in the event the Governor of the State of Georgia declares a state of emergency for the State and/or for Fulton County, school will closed according to the Governor’s mandate.

Fire Drill Procedures

Posted in every room is a map detailing the evacuation protocol. Scholars are to follow their teacher outside in the event of a fire drill or fire event and to stay with their class. Scholars must proceed directly to the designated area.

All scholars will be given instruction on fire exit drills. The instructions will be as follows:

Any scholar violating this procedure is jeopardizing the safety of our school and will face consequences including possible suspension. Any scholar found guilty of pulling the school’s fire alarm without cause will be subject to strict disciplinary action, including disciplinary tribunal.

Tornado Emergency Procedures

In the event of a tornado warning, scholars will be required to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves. When a tornado warning has been announced by the National Weather Service, the School Leader or designee will be responsible for communication directly with scholars and teachers about the impending danger via an “all ­call announcement”. Teachers will be asked to follow the same procedures as above for Fire Drills, except the scholars will proceed to the posted tornado ‘shelter in place’ location.

Relocation

In the event of an actual emergency which requires an evacuation, the scholars will be escorted to an undisclosed relocation site. The school safety team (Facilities Manager, Security Officer) and other identified personnel will conduct checkpoint procedures – bus pick up, record of attendance, first aid, and begin communication notifications. The school safety team will check to see who is missing, injured and in need of emergency first aid. While at the relocation site, information will be gathered about the critical incident to forward to the Police, EMS, and Transportation. After gathering information on the incident and arranging transportation, staff and scholars will proceed to the reunification site via buses.

Reunification

The reunification Site is the location where the school will reunite parents with their children. This location will be announced on the public using WSB­TV ­Channel 2, Centennial Academy Website (www.centennialacademycharter.org), Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), Robo-calls, Emails, and Text Messages. Unlike the relocation site, the reunification site is not a private site. After information has been collected, the scholars and staff will be transported via school transportation to the reunification site (listed below) for parents to retrieve their child(ren). Parents will be required to show photo ­identification and to sign a release form.

Student Support Team

Centennial Academy is committed to each scholar’s success. We have many ways to help scholars who are struggling to learn and need additional supports to be successful. Response to Intervention (RTI) is one form of support. Response to Intervention (RTI) is a learning process which matches general education classroom instruction to each scholar’s learning needs.

Centennial Academy uses Georgia’s four-­tiered scholar Achievement Pyramid of Interventions to provide appropriate and effective response to Intervention services incorporating universal screening, targeted interventions, and a team approach to decision making and the development and implementation of services. If your child presents challenges during the course of the school year, additional support may be required to make decisions regarding interventions at the Tier III level which employs the focus of the Scholar Support Team (SST). The SST Chairperson ensures the process is followed and team decisions are made according to the outcome of data indicating scholar progress. Tier IV Interventions and services are facilitated through specialized programs or instructional delivery models such as the Department of Special Education, English Language Learners, or Gifted Instruction.

Special Education Services

Centennial Academy is committed to providing Special Education services in an inclusive environment. Special Education teachers work with scholars in a variety of settings using best practices based on the scholar's’ needs as outlined in their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Special Education teachers regularly monitor and assess each scholar’s progress, collaborate with families, write and review IEP’s and provide instruction. The Special Education Coordinator ensures services are provided in accordance with federal and state mandates/laws.

Gifted Program & Services

The Gifted Education Program provides differentiated instruction for intellectually advanced and creatively gifted scholars. According to Georgia Board Rule 160-­4-­2­-.38, a gifted scholar is defined as one who demonstrates a high degree of intellectual and/or creative abilities, exhibits an exceptionally high degree of motivation, and/or excels in specific academic fields, and who needs special instruction and/or special ancillary services to achieve at levels which are commensurate with his or her abilities. Gifted scholars receive five segments of instruction each week from a gifted endorsed teacher. Services in grades K­-4 will be provided using the resource model (meeting outside of the regular education classroom with a gifted endorsed teacher). Scholars in grades 5­-8 will be provided gifted services in the regular education classroom of a gifted endorsed teacher. Additionally, gifted instruction takes place at Georgia Aquarium at least once per week for all scholars in the gifted program. The specific courses for a scholar are determined by past classroom performance, nationally normed achievement test scores and teacher recommendations.

English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

The Centennial Academy ESOL program is committed to meeting the needs of English Learners (ELs) and their families. ESOL is a federally ­mandated instructional program for eligible ELs in grades K-12 (Georgia School Law Code 1981, 20-­2­-156, enacted in 1985). The ESOL program is standards­-based and emphasizes academic and social language development. ESOL coursework is based upon WIDA Consortium English Language Development Standards while simultaneously integrating grade appropriate content standards. Centennial Academy’s ESOL program also provides access to resources and facilitates communication between the school district and home to allow parents and families of ELs to play an active role in their scholar’s education.

GENERAL SERVICES

Bus Transportation

Centennial Heroes have the right to a safe and comfortable trip to and from school. Centennial Academy utilizes Mainline Transportation Services (MTI) to transport all scholars within the school’s attendance zone. Additionally, scholars with disabilities are transported using APS transportation services when stipulated in the scholars IEP. Scholars residing outside of the school’s attendance zone are not eligible for bus transportation. Scholars must appear on the passenger list generated from the attendance data pulled from registration documentation provided by the scholar’s parents and then, verified by Infinite Campus. New scholars should expect a 3-5 day waiting period before new routes are assigned. All scholars and parents must be aware of the Bus Safety and Conduct Standards.

Cafeteria

Centennial Academy utilizes Atlanta Public Schools’ Nutrition Department to provide the breakfast and lunch programs for our scholars.

Centennial Academy participates in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which allows all scholars to receive all school provided breakfast and lunch free of charge. The CEP provides an alternative approach for offering school meals to local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools in low income area. Instead of collecting individual applications for free and reduced price meals, the CEP allows schools that predominantly serve low ­income children to offer free, nutritious school meals to all scholars through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs.

Adult Prices: ­ The cost for adults to eat breakfast or lunch is $3.00. Parents must stop at the front desk and get a visitors pass before going to the cafeteria.

Restrictions for Outside Food:­ Because of food allergies and our focus on nutritious meals for all scholars, outside food (other than sack food from home) is not permitted; this includes meals from local fast food chains. Please note that Centennial Academy is a 100% nut-free school.

Heating Lunch for Scholars: ­Scholars are not permitted to heat meals in the cafeteria.

Clinic and Health Services

Centennial Academy understands the importance of good health and has employed a full time, registered nurse. Our nurse is responsible for assessment, intervention, and management of health related concerns in the school setting. This service is not to replace the care a scholar receives from a regular doctor or clinic, but will provide:

Clinic Card: ­ Parents are required to complete an updated Clinic Card each year. The clinic card provides the school nurse with important health information, including identified allergies, physician information, preferred hospital in case of an emergency, emergency contacts, etc.

Medication: ­ Prescription medicines must be in the original container. Parental permission slip must also accompany the medication. This form may be obtained from the nurse’s office. A parent/guardian must deliver prescription medications that are classified as controlled substances to the nurse’s office. Scholars may not administer their own medication. All medication will be stored and dispensed through the nurse’s office.

Contagious Health Problems: ­ We do not diagnose health problems; however, in the event a child appears to have a contagious health problem such as lice, chicken pox, ringworm, scabies, etc., the parent will be notified and arrangements must be made for the scholar to be taken home. The scholar will be readmitted to school when the problem has cleared up and/or with written notice from the physician stating that the health concern is under treatment and is no longer contagious.

Sick Call: After an assessment by the nurse, if it is determined that a scholar should not be at school, a parent, guardian, or emergency contact will be notified. Additionally, please contact the school office and the nurse’s office when changes occur with the emergency contact information.

Media Center Services

The Media Specialist manages electronic, print, video, and other information resources in order to help scholars and staff within the school retrieve and organize information. The media center is for all scholars, parents, and staff members. Hall passes are required to use the media center during the instructional day. While in the Media Center, scholars are expected to respect all scholars who are entitled to a quiet work place, and to take good care of media center materials. Scholars wishing to check out books from the Media Center must have written parent permission on file. Scholars are responsible for all materials checked out from the media center and are expected to treat all books and magazines carefully and responsibly. If books are lost and/or damaged scholars are expected to pay any replacement fees. The school is authorized to withhold report cards and records pending return of media center books or payment of lost books.

Responsible Technology Use Policy ­ At Centennial Academy, we use technology to enhance our mission to teach the skills, knowledge, and behaviors scholars will need to succeed in the global community. We expect scholars to embrace the following principles so they may become responsible, digital citizens. These technologies may include, but are not limited to, school­ provided equipment as well as personal devices (computers, tablets, cell phones, laptops, netbooks, e­readers, interactive whiteboards, etc.).

  1. Centennial Academy technology is intended for educational purposes only.
  2. All activity over the network or while using Centennial Academy technologies will be monitored.
  3. Access to online content via the school network will be filtered in accordance with our policies and federal regulations, including the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA).
  4. Users are expected to follow the same rules for good behavior and respectful conduct online as offline.
  5. Misuse of school resources will result in disciplinary action.
  6. Centennial Academy makes every effort to ensure users safety and security online, but will not be held accountable for any harm or damages that result from use of school technologies

Internet Use: ­Centennial Academy has Internet access in the Media Center and classrooms. Prerequisites for Internet connection are a signed Acceptable Use Policy and Internet training. All Internet users must sign the Acceptable Use Policy and Internet Use Authorization Form. Scholar users must also have a parent or guardian sign the Parent Guardian Authorization Form. The purpose of school internet is to support research and the educational curriculum. The use of the Internet is a privilege and inappropriate use will result in the cancellation of those privileges and disciplinary actions taken. Scholars are not permitted to use the Internet without the supervision of a trained adult.

Electronic Devices: Centennial Academy Scholars are not permitted to use personal electronic devices on campus. Cell phones should not be on or visible on campus. Parents should contact the main office at 404-802-8550 to communicate with scholars. If a scholar brings a cell phone to campus, it will be confiscated and the scholar will be assigned a detention.

Counseling Services

We are fortunate to have four full time Counselors at the school. Our counselors provide quality programs for scholars in all grades in three broad domains: self­-knowledge; educational and occupational; and career planning. Our Counselors support our entire school population in the areas of classroom guidance, small group non-­therapeutic counseling (grief, divorce, etc.) bully prevention, college and career awareness and exposure, and support with school-­wide initiatives such as Red Ribbon Week, Career Day, and Morning Meeting, Advisement, and our High School Transition process.  They are also important members of our Lighthouse Team that leads our Leader in Me program which guides our scholars through the 7 Habits of Highly Effective scholars.

Lost & Found and Uniform Bank

Any article that has been lost and returned will be held for one grading period. After that time, items will be donated to a local charity. Items can be claimed by request at the Hero Desk. Please ensure that all of your child’s belongings are properly labeled.

The school has an established uniform bank. Any family who cannot afford to purchase uniforms may consult with the Family Engagement Specialist. Parents are expected to launder the uniforms and require scholars to wear the uniform on a daily basis once received.

Academic Program Overview

Centennial Academy employs a rigorous and relevant curriculum with an interdisciplinary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) design, which will provide scholars with the ability to learn in STEAM-­based units of learning, intentionally blending the core content into authentic, real­-world application opportunities. Centennial Academy provides scholars with real­-world, interdisciplinary project­-based learning opportunities during the 2018-2019 school year which will be celebrated through the Elementary School Division Project Showcase and the Middle School Division iCurate Showcase. Through our careful grade­band curriculum development and intentional, data ­driven teaching and learning process, scholars will acquire all necessary pre­requisite skills in reading; writing; listening and speaking; grammar and English proficiency; mathematics; scientific method; social studies and geography; visual arts; performing arts; independent study skills; and technology skills to meet the scholar performance objectives. Through this design, our scholars will focus on developing a broad range of “thinking skills” - critical thinking; creative thinking; decision making; logic and problem solving.

Curriculum Nights

Centennial Academy has Curriculum Nights once every semester. Curriculum Nights are designed to provide parents with content ­specific support for each quarter of instruction. During the one and a half hour sessions, parents will receive face­-to-face, hands-­on learning experiences in each of the four major content areas of reading/language arts,mathematics, science and social studies. By the end, parents will identify the major standards needed for comprehensive understanding and mastery and receive resources to support their child’s development during the course of the quarter. We strongly encourage parents come ready to learn, experience the learning expectations of their child and receive resources to support their child’s work at home.

Syllabus (Middle School Division Only)

A course syllabus serves as a contract between the teacher and their respective scholars. A syllabus is both a   document about the class content, goals, and elements and a guide for scholars to the kind of teaching and  learning they can expect in class. Course syllabi will be provided to each scholar in each period, core content and connections.  It is required that a parent/guardian sign and return the course syllabus to the homeroom teacher,

Scholar Consumables/Textbooks

Textbooks (when applicable) are provided without cost to scholars. Scholars are responsible and accountable for their upkeep and return in good condition. Scholars are responsible for all lost and damaged books and are expected to pay for replacement. The school will withhold report cards and records pending return of textbooks or payment for lost or damaged books.

School Supplies

Scholars are required to buy their own school supplies as determined by their teachers. Scholars must bring supplies to class every day. Please refer to your scholar’s grade level supply list for specific school supplies needed.

Homework Guidelines

Homework is an extension of the school day. Scholars are expected to meet the deadlines and expectations set by their teachers. The school­wide homework focus is on building reading fluency and math fluency and automaticity. In addition to the assigned homework, scholars should read appropriate texts and practice mathematics facts during non­-school hours. Homework is graded for completion and not accuracy.

Make up Work

Scholars must complete all work missed in a time frame equal to the number of days absent. The parent and scholar share the responsibility for getting the make­up work completed and turned in on time. If a scholar will be absent for an extended period, work should be requested at least three days prior to the beginning of the absence. Failure to make up missed work assignments will be reflected in the scholar’s grades, and in some cases, could have long­-range effects on a scholar’s overall progress.

Middle School Division (only) - Procedures regarding Make-Up work will be outlined in the Course Syllabus.

Intervention Block

The master schedule in elementary school has been carefully constructed to support the needs of our scholars in third and fourth grade. Scholars will receive specialized instruction at their instructional level in the areas of reading and mathematics. Progress monitoring will be included in the Intervention Block. Teachers will use the data gleaned from the assessments to determine the instructional group for which the scholar will be placed. Scholars will receive standard and/or skill instructional support for 30 minutes each day. Our goal is to assess the scholars often to ensure scholars are grouped and instructed at the appropriate academic level. 

Middle School Division

The master schedule in middle school has intervention times built into the connections periods. Scholars will receive specialized instruction tiered to their individual needs in the areas of math and reading. Each intervention class will provide 45 minutes of support each day to ensure that he/she is getting additional support in their areas of need.

Educational Field Trips (Day Trips)

Participation**: ­ Field trips are an integral part of the educational experience. Periodically throughout the school year, grade levels will participate in off site and/or on­site field trips. Field trips are designed for scholars to engage in real­-life experiences to support the learning of the classroom. All field trip requests are approved by each division’s Director of Curriculum & Instruction.

**Please Note: Excluding scholars from field-trips is not a consequence for classroom behavioral concerns. If a scholar exhibits a pattern of behavior that potentially poses unsafe conditions for the scholar, his/her peers, or teachers, an alternative plan will be discussed with parents in advance of the field trip.  

Permission Slips: ­ In order for scholars to participate in any off site field trip, parents must complete the 2018-2019 Field trip Permission Form.

Payment Expectations: ­ While we do our best to offset the cost of field trips, some field trips require the financial contribution of the family. We ask that parents remit payment for field trips on time in order to ensure their scholar’s participation.

Fundraising Opportunities: ­The school and the PTA provides fundraising opportunities for families to help defray the costs of field trips and other extended learning opportunities. What if I would like to attend with my child? ­ Parents are welcome on field trips if and only if they serve as chaperones. Since this is an off­-site educational experience, all adults accompanying scholars will be responsible for the safety, security of all scholars attending the trip. It is not allowable to attend the trip only to experience the trip with your child. In addition, all chaperones must complete the Volunteer Release Form and complete the Chaperone Training prior to attending any trip.

Infinite Campus

Parents can keep track of their child’s class schedule, attendance records and grades via Campus Portal for Parents (CPP). Additionally, CPP enables parents to verify and update household information, including your e­mail address, home address and telephone numbers. All parents and/or guardians will have access to the tool. CPP can be accessed online using any Windows PC or Mac computer that has Internet access and one of the following web browsers:

We will provide parents with information on how to create a CPP username and password. Once parents have received a login (activation key), they can go to https://ic.apsk12.org/portal and select the link that reads “…have been assigned a Campus Portal Activation Key” under the “First time using Campus Portal? ” heading.

ASSESSMENT
Progress Monitoring

Centennial Academy’s policy stipulates that the progression of scholars will be continuous from one level to the next and will be characterized by early diagnosis, quality instructional and supporting services, including activities beyond the regular school day. By the end of third and fifth grades, scholars are expected to learn the basic skills in language arts and mathematics that are necessary to perform the course of study offered in the fourth and sixth grade. Except for scholars with an approved Individual Education Plan (IEP), which includes an exemption from this policy, no scholar will be promoted to the fourth or sixth grade who does not possess the skills needed to be successful in the regular curriculum.

Parent Conferences

Centennial Academy designates two mandatory conference periods during the course of the academic school year. During these times, all teachers are required to meet with 100% of their parents. Dates will be posted on the Community Calendar, School Website, and Weekly Parent Bulletin. The purpose of these mandatory conferences is to provide face­-to-­face reviews of the scholar’s progress during the course of the academic school year. Please note, this is the minimum number of conferences that the parent and/or teacher may request, and we strongly encourage parents to request a conference whenever needed. Conference requests by parents or teachers can be made by note, email or telephone. To minimize disruption of the instructional day, we ask that you plan to schedule conferences to be held after school.

Progress Checks are dates when parents MUST access Infinite Campus to view their scholar’s current progress in each content area. This date is critical; it is the mid­point of each academic quarter, a total of 4 progress checks have been scheduled for the 2018 -2019 school year. Please Note: If any of the grades posted in Infinite Campus are at a C or below, this check-in serves as the deficiency notice.

Schoolwide Discipline

In order for teachers to teach and scholars to learn in such an environment, a school­-wide discipline plan will be used. All instructional staff will teach our Centennial Academy Heroes to make good decisions and accept responsibility by helping them cultivate the character traits of a HERO.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a researched and proven way to systematically and proactively create and sustain positive school culture and climate. By using scholars’ natural proclivity for recognition, PBIS acknowledges and catalyzes positive behavior, leading to decreased negative incidents and more motivation and productivity in the classroom.

At Centennial Academy, we utilize the LiveSchool software platform that enhances the PBIS system to help achieve goals for sustaining a positive climate and culture. The LiveSchool platform is a merit-based point system that focuses on acknowledging specific positive social and academic scholar behaviors.

Everyone is entitled to a safe, secure, orderly, and enjoyable environment in which to learn and work.  The rules and regulations in this code are designed toward that end and are effective during the following times and places:

  1. On school grounds at any time;
  2. Off school grounds at a school bus stop, on a school bus, school activity, function, or event;
  3. When either the alleged perpetrator or the alleged victim is en route to and/or from school, or to or from a school activity, function or event;
  4. Off school grounds when the behavior of a scholar (1) could result in the scholar being criminally charged with a felony or which could result in a felony criminal charge if committed by an adult; and which (2) makes the scholar's continued presence at school a potential danger to person or property at school or which disrupts the educational process.
  5. Off school grounds while the scholar is participating in or attending school-sponsored or school-related activities such as field trips, conferences, or athletic events; or is otherwise subject to the jurisdiction of school authorities;
  6. Off school grounds when the misconduct is directed at a school scholar or employee and is related to the victim's school affiliation, or when the off-campus conduct directly affects the safety and welfare of the school community or the orderly mission and function of the school; and
  7. Off school grounds and when a scholar leaves without permission (AWOL) of a school official.

Definitions

Discipline Levels

Centennial Academy follows a progressive discipline process that is designed to create the expectation that the degree of discipline will be in proportion to the severity of the behavior leading to the discipline, that the previous discipline history of the scholar being disciplined and other relevant factors will be taken into account, and that all due process procedures required by federal and state law will be followed. (O.C.G.A. § 20-2-735)

Level 1 infractions are minor acts of misconduct which interfere with orderly school procedures, school functions, or extracurricular programs, approved transportation, or a scholar’s own learning process.

Level 3 infractions are serious acts of misconduct. These behaviors include, but are not limited to, repeated misbehaviors of a similar nature, serious disruptions of the school environment that may threaten health, safety, or property and other acts of serious misconduct. Scholars who reach this level will automatically be referred to an administrator.  Any misconduct that threatens the health, safety, or well-being of others may result in immediate suspension of the scholar from the school and/or school-sponsored activities for up to ten (10) school days, pending disciplinary investigation of the allegations. In addition to possible suspension, scholars who commit these offenses may be recommended for long-term suspension or expulsion and reassignment to an alternative school.

  1. ALCOHOL/ILLEGAL DRUGS/INHALANTS:
  1. No scholar shall possess, consume, store, or be under any degree of influence of alcoholic beverages (including related products such as “near” beer, non- alcoholic beer, and nonalcoholic wine coolers) and/or illegal drugs, narcotics, hallucinogens, amphetamines, barbiturates, marijuana, or any other substance listed under the Georgia Controlled Substances Act or any substance believed by the scholar to be alcohol or an illegal drug. Legal intoxication is not required for violation of this Code of Conduct.
  2. No scholar shall possess, transmit, store, buy, sell, distribute or possess with intent to sell any drug-related paraphernalia. (Level 2-3)
  3. No scholar shall falsely present or identify a substance to be alcohol or an illegal drug. (Level 2-3)
  4. No scholar shall buy, sell, or otherwise distribute or possess with intent to distribute or attempt to buy, sell, or otherwise distribute or possess with intent to distribute alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, narcotics, hallucinogens, amphetamines, barbiturates, or marijuana, or any other substance listed under the Georgia Controlled Substances Act, or any substance falsely identified as such, or is believed by the purchaser to be an alcoholic beverage or illegal drug, narcotics, hallucinogens, amphetamines, barbiturates, or marijuana, or any other substance listed under the Georgia Controlled Substances Act.
  5. No scholar shall sniff or be under the influence of inhalants and/or other substances. 6. No scholar shall be in possession or under the influence of synthetic Cannabinoids such as “K-2” (Also known as, Spice, Blayze II, RedBird, Mojo, VooDoo Magic, Spice Gold, Yucatan Fire, Demon and Serenity).

NOTE: Alcohol/Illegal Drug/Inhalant offenses are cumulative for grades K-8. 

Consequences for Possession or Personal Use:

  1. ATTENDANCE VIOLATIONS
  1. A scholar shall not be truant by failing to attend school in compliance with the Georgia Compulsory Attendance Laws. (Level 1)
  2. No scholar shall be tardy for a class or activity for which he/she is enrolled without a valid excuse. (Level 1)
  3. No scholar shall miss any class or activity for which he/she is enrolled without a valid excuse. (Level 2)
  4. scholars shall not leave school grounds during the course of the regularly scheduled school day without the permission of a parent/guardian and the Principal or designee. scholars must follow the established procedures for checking in or out of school. (Level 2)
  1. BOMB THREATS:

Consequences for Bomb Threats:

  1. BULLETS, BB’S, PAINT BALL PELLETS
  1. scholars may not possess ammunition, BB’s, paint pellets, or CO2 cartridges.  These items are disruptive to the function of the school and may pose a safety risk. (Level 1-3)

  1. BUS BEHAVIORS:

scholars shall follow all scholar behavior policies and regulations while at the bus stop and on school-provided transportation including, but not limited to, the prohibitions on physical violence, bullying, assault, battery, disrespectful conduct, or other unruly behavior. In addition:

  1. scholars must keep all body parts inside the bus at all times. (Level 1-3 and/or suspension from the bus for a specified time)
  2. Nothing may be thrown into, within, out of, or at the bus. (Level 1-3 and/or suspension from the bus for a specified time)
  3. Bus Disruptions: No scholar shall act in any manner so as to interfere with a driver’s ability to safely drive the bus or another scholar’s ability to ride the bus without harassing or loud distractions.  scholars must remain seated at all times unless directed by the driver.  scholars must remain quiet at all railroad crossings. (Level 1-3 and/or suspension from the bus for a specified time)
  4. Emergency doors and windows are to be used only at the direction of the driver. (Level 1-3 and/or suspension from the bus for a specified time)
  5. Scholars may not ride a bus or disembark a bus at a bus stop other than that assigned for their residence without submitting a written request from their parent/guardian to the Assistant Head of School or designee for approval. (Level 1-3 and/or suspension from the bus for a specified time)
  6. Scholars shall not use any electronic devices during the operation of a school bus, including but not limited to: cell phones; pagers; audible radios, tape players, and compact disc players without headphones; or any other electronic device, that may interfere with the bus’ communication equipment or the driver’s operation of the school bus.  scholars may not use any electronic device to video or audio record while on school provided transportation vehicles. (Level 1-3 and/or suspension from the bus for a specified time)
  7. Scholars shall not use mirrors, lasers, flashing lights, flash cameras, or any other lights or reflective surfaces in a manner, which might interfere with the operation of the school bus. (Level 1-3 and/or suspension from the bus for a specified time)
  8. Scholars who commit sexual offenses against scholars, or physical offenses against Centennial Academy employees (as defined elsewhere in the Code of Conduct) on the school bus will receive penalties for the offense(s) as specified in this Code of Conduct for these offenses and may also be suspended from the bus for a specified time.

If a scholar has been found to have engaged in battery, acts of physical violence, bullying or physical threats on the school bus, the scholar’s parent/guardian shall be required to meet with the Assistant Head of School or designee to execute a bus behavior contract.  

  1. PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS/ELECTRONIC DEVICES:
  1. Scholars shall not use, display, or turn on communication devices, cellular phones, video phones, or electronic devices during instructional time, class change time, breakfast or lunch.  (Level 1)
  2. Scholars shall not use personal technology resources to distribute or display inappropriate material.  Inappropriate material does not serve an instructional or educational purpose and includes but is not limited to the following:
  1. Scholars shall not use personal technology devices to access chat rooms/social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat during the regular school day for non-instructional purposes and without the express permission of the teacher (Level 1-2)
  2. Scholars shall not use audio or visual recording devices without the permission of a school administrator.  This includes, but is not limited to, using recording devices to video, photograph, or record misbehaviors or to violate the privacy of others. (Level 1-3)

  1. DISRESPECTFUL CONDUCT:
  1. No scholar shall use any type of profane, vulgar, obscene or ethnically offensive language (written or oral) or gestures. (K-4 - Level 2) (5-8 - Level 2-3)
  2. No scholar shall possess or distribute profane, vulgar, pornographic, obscene, or ethnically offensive materials. (Level 1-2)
  3. A scholar shall not use profane, obscene, or abusive language (written or oral) or gestures toward Centennial Academy personnel or other adults on school property or at school sponsored events (Level 2-3)
  4. Insubordination: All scholars shall comply with reasonable directions or commands of all authorized Centennial Academy personnel or designees. (Level 1-3)
  5. All scholars shall comply with the directions of a staff member to remove themselves from the location of a disruptive situation. (Level 1-3)
  6. No scholar shall refuse to identify oneself upon request of any Centennial Academy employee or designee. (Level 1-2)
  7. No scholar shall repeatedly violate the school dress code. (Level 1-2)
  8. No scholar shall fail to attend Saturday School, Detention, or In-School Suspension. (Level 1-2)

  1. DISRUPTION OF SCHOOL:
  1. Class Disruption: No scholars shall intentionally make noise or act in any other manner so as to interfere with a teacher’s ability to conduct a class or a scholar’s ability to learn. (Level 1-3)
  2. School Disruption: No scholar shall, in any manner, by the use of violence, force, noise, coercion, threat, intimidation, fear, passive resistance, or any other conduct, intentionally cause the disruption of any lawful mission, process or function of the school, or engage in any such conduct for the purpose of causing the disruption or obstruction of any such lawful mission, process, or function.
  3. Scholars may not enter the school building after hours without express permission. (Level 2-3)
  4. Scholars may not return to campus or attend any school function while on suspension. (K-4 - Level 1-2) (5-8 - Level 2-3)
  5. Scholars may not be present in an unauthorized area. (Level 1-2)
  6. Scholars shall not occupy nor block the entrance/exit of the school building, gymnasium, school grounds, properties, or part(s) thereof with the intent to deprive others of its use, or when the effect thereof is to deprive others of such use.
  7. Scholars shall not prevent or attempt to prevent the convening or continued function of any school, class, activity or lawful meeting or assembly on the school campus. (Level 1-3)
  8. Scholars shall not prevent scholars from attending a class or school activity. (Level 1-3)
  9. No scholar shall, except under the direct instruction of the Assistant Head of School, block normal pedestrian or vehicular traffic on a school campus or adjacent grounds. (Level 1-3)
  10. No scholar shall be involved in a serious verbal altercation that disrupts the school, class, or school activity. (Level 2-3)
  1. FALSE REPORTS:
  1. No scholar shall knowingly and willfully make false reports or statements whether orally or in writing; falsely accuse other scholars of wrong actions; falsely accuse Centennial Academy employees of wrong action or inappropriate conduct; falsify school records; or forge signatures.  (K-4 - Level 1-2) (5-8 - Level 1-3)
  2. No scholar shall make or cause false calls to emergency services including false fire alarms which create a potentially dangerous interruption to the normal school operation and to both the physical and emotional well-being of scholars and staff.

  1. GAMBLING:
  1. No scholar shall participate in any type of gambling activity as defined by state law or that involves the wagering or betting of services, money or other items. (Level 1-2)

  1. GANG RELATED ACTIVITY:
  1. No scholar shall engage in any activity while participating in a gang which interferes with the orderly conduct of school activities, with discipline in the schools, or with the rights of other scholars or faculty members. (K-4 - Level 1-3) (5-8 - Level 2-3)

  1. HARASSMENT, INTIMIDATION, THREATS (VERBAL, WRITTEN OR ELECTRONIC), AND BULLYING BEHAVIOR:
  1. No scholar shall engage in harassment, intimidation, or abuse of or toward any other scholar(s), Centennial Academy employees or other adults for any reason.  This prohibition includes but is not limited to, harassment, intimidation or abuse of scholars or others based on actual or perceived race, creed, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or a physical characteristic. (K-4 - Level 1-3) (5-8 - Level 2-3)
  2. No scholar shall threaten, either verbally, in writing, electronically, or by physical presence, expressed or implied, or conspire to cause bodily injury to any scholar, Centennial Academy employee or non-employee. (Level 2-3)
  3. No scholar shall participate in bullying/cyberbullying behavior as defined in the Code of Conduct.

Parents/guardians of scholars who are victims of bullying or are found to have committed bullying behaviors will be notified via conference or letter/referral.  Staff members should report instances of these behaviors to school administration immediately so that administrators may review them in a timely manner.

Employees, volunteers, scholars and parents/guardians/other persons that have control of scholars may report or otherwise provide information on bullying activity to a school administrator anonymously if they choose.  No person who reports bullying behaviors will be retaliated against by any school employee.  scholars who retaliate against others for reports of bullying behavior are subject to discipline which may include enhanced consequences.  scholars who knowingly file a false report of bullying will also be disciplined.

Scholars, parents/guardians and other stakeholders may report incidents of bullying to an administrator, teacher, counselor or other staff member in WRITING using the Centennial Academy Incident Form. Verbal reports will not be considered as official reports. Once a Centennial Academy Scholar Bullying Incident Form has been completed it may be given to any Centennial Academy staff member. Centennial staff members are required to submit this form to an administrator or designee within 24 hours of receipt. The Centennial Academy Scholar Bullying Incident Form can be found in the main office, on the school’s website, or in the back of the appendix of this handbook.

**When a scholar, parent, or staff member uses the word “bullying” to describe an incident involving a scholar, the flow chart, located in the Appendix will be used to assess if we are indeed dealing with a bullying incident versus a conflict.

Centennial Academy is committed to equitable and swift resolution of harassment issues. Any scholar experiencing harassment should follow any or all of these measures:

  1. Let the offender know you want the behavior to stop. Be clear and direct. Do not apologize.
  2. Make a record of when, where, and how you were mistreated; include witnesses (if any), direct quotations, and other evidence.
  3. If you are not comfortable confronting the offender alone, ask a friend or adult to accompany you, or write a letter to the offender, keeping a copy.
  4. Scholars should notify their teacher or another adult staff member.

  1. No scholar shall possess, light, and/or discharge smoke bombs, stink bombs, fireworks, cigarette lighters, matches, or similar devices. (Level 2)

Administrators or designees will continue to exercise professional discretion in determining incidents of horseplay, intentional spitting, physical altercation, fighting or physical bullying, or self-defense as defined by Georgia law in O.C.G.A. § 16-3-21. Administrators or designees will have the authority to assign consequences based on behavior related to specific incidents. This may include differentiated discipline assigned on a case by case basis. The minimum consequences for prohibited behaviors will apply as noted in this Code of Conduct.

NOTE:

  1. No scholar shall use any device, chemical, irritant, or substance in a manner inconsistent with its intended or prescribed use, or in a manner designed to cause harm, physical irritation, or allergic reaction.  Examples include, but are not limited to, directing a laser optical pointer or similar device at another person’s eyes, and applying “itching powder” or like substances to another person. (Level 1-2)
  2. Scholars may not possess or use any device designed to produce a mild electrical shock. (Level 1-2)
  3. Scholars shall not engage in rough or boisterous activities. (Level 1-2)
  4. No scholar shall participate in any kind of physical altercation. (Level 2-3)
  5. No scholar shall participate in any kind of physical harassment (This can include forms of hazing, intentionally spitting, shanking [i.e. intentionally exposing another scholar’s undergarments]). (Level 2-3)

If a scholar commits an act of physical threat (assault) upon a Centennial Academy employee, a mandatory disciplinary hearing must be held, regardless of the recommended discipline, unless the hearing is waived.  A disciplinary hearing regarding a recommendation for a short-term out of school (10 days OSS or less) may be waived by the employee.  A disciplinary hearing regarding a recommendation of long-term out-of-school suspension (11 days OSS or more) may be waived by both the employee and the parent/guardian.

  1. No scholar shall be in possession of prescription medication not prescribed for the scholar.  In addition, a scholar shall not sell, distribute, or possess with intent to distribute any prescribed medication on school property. (Level 2-3)

NOTE: If the prescription drug is a controlled substance under the Georgia Controlled Substances Act, the scholar shall be found to have violated scholar Offense 1, Alcohol/Illegal Drugs/Inhalants, and shall be disciplined according to that Section.

  1. PROPERTY RELATED OFFENSES

        NOTE: Parents/guardians and/or scholars will be held responsible for restitution of the full value of any damaged or stolen property.

  1. No scholar shall intentionally cause substantial damage to personal property belonging to a District employee or another scholar. (Level 2-3)
  2. No scholar shall set fire to any private property or school property either while one school grounds or off school grounds during a school activity, function, or event. (Level 2-3 and contact Public Safety).

  1. SEXUAL OFFENSES:

        Sexual offenses are prohibited against members of the same sex as well as members of the opposite sex.

  1. No scholar shall be engaged in amorous kissing, other inordinate displays of affection. (Level 1-2)
  2. No scholar shall consent to and participate in any form of sexual activity. (Level 2-3 and contact Public Safety)
  3. No scholar shall expose one’s intimate body parts or “moon” in public.  Intimate body parts include the primary genital area, anus, groin, inner thighs, or buttocks of a male or female and the breasts of a female. (Level 2-3)
  4. No scholar shall commit any act of verbal, written, gesture oriented, or physical sexual misconduct on school property, school buses, at school-sponsored events, or while using school technology resources. (Level 2-3)
  5. No scholar shall participate in verbal or visual conduct of a sexual nature (including, offensive slurs, sexually offensive drawings, photographs or posters directed towards another person) where there is a pattern of harassing behavior or a single significant incident. (Level 2-3)
  6. No scholar shall participate in physical conduct of a sexual nature (including, but not limited to, unwelcome sexual advances or gestures) where there is a pattern of harassing behavior or a single significant incident.  (Level 2-3 and contact Public Safety)
  7. No scholar shall commit any act of sexual battery as defined in the Centennial Academy Code of Conduct on school property, school buses, or at school-sponsored events.

  1. A scholar shall not consume, possess, sell, distribute, or possess with intent to distribute diet pills, caffeine pills, or other stimulant on school property. (Level 2-3)

        All scholars using school technology must have a signed Internet Use Form on file with the school.  Unauthorized access and prohibited behaviors are fully discussed and defined in the Technology Acceptable Use Policy.  School technology cannot be outside of school related purposes.

  1.  scholars will not purposefully look for security problems because such action may be considered an unauthorized attempt to gain access to school technology resources. (Level 2-3 and contact Public Safety)
  2. scholars will not attempt to or disrupt the school technology resources by destroying, altering, or otherwise modifying technology.  Hacking is strictly prohibited. (Level 3 and contact Public Safety)
  3. scholars will not use school technology resources to solicit business, advertise, or engage in any other selling activities in support of non-school related fund-raising or private business enterprises. (Level 1-3)
  4. scholars will not engage in any activity that monopolizes, wastes, or compromises school technology resources. (Level 2-3)
  5. scholars will not copy computer programs, software or other technology provided by Centennial Academy for personal use.  Downloading unauthorized files is strictly prohibited. (Level 1-3)
  6. No scholar shall attempt to, threaten to, or actually damage, destroy, vandalize, or steal private property or school property while using school technology resources on or off school grounds. (Level 2-3, restitution and contact Public Safety)
  7. scholars will not use school technology resources to distribute nor display inappropriate material.  Inappropriate material does not serve an instructional or educational purpose and includes but is not limited to the following:
  1. scholars shall not commit any other prohibited act discussed in the Internet Acceptable Use Policy.  This includes any modification of school records. (Level 1-3)
  2. scholars may not use school technology devices to access chat rooms/social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram without the express permission of the teacher.
  3. scholars may not use audio or visual recording devices without permission of a school administrator.  This includes, but is not limited to, using recording devices to video or record misbehaviors or to violate the privacy of others. (Level 1-3)
  4. scholars may not access the technology (software, online programs, email, etc.) accounts of any individuals in the school without their express consent. (Level 1-3)

  1. TOBACCO:
  1. scholar possession or use of tobacco or tobacco product substitutes (e.g., tobacco look-alikes, such as BaccOff), cigarette look-alikes (e.g., electronic cigarettes), hookahs and hookah look-alikes (e.g., electronic hookahs) on school property and at school-sponsored events is prohibited.

  1. WEAPONS:
  1. A scholar who wants to use a weapon or look-alike weapon in an exhibit, presentation, or activity in a classroom or at a school-sponsored event must meet the following requirements:
  1. Prohibition: A scholar shall not possess, handle, transmit, or cause to be transmitted; use or threaten to use; sell, attempt to sell, or conspire to sell a weapon, either concealed or open to view, on school property.  A weapon includes a dangerous weapon, firearm or hazardous object, as further defined below.  All weapons shall be confiscated and given to Public Safety or other law enforcement agencies as appropriate.  The disposition of confiscated weapons shall be determined by the superintendent or his/her designated school official, in conjunction with law enforcement.

NOTE: The definition of a “weapon” for the purposes of this Code of Conduct is one that includes, but is not limited, the following items:

Category I Weapon - Dangerous Weapon or Firearm (Loaded or Unloaded):

NOTE: Category I Weapon offenses are cumulative in grades K-4 and grades 5-8.

Dangerous weapon means any weapon which fires explosive or non-explosive rockets or weapon which is designed to explode to injure, kill, destroy armor, or similar weapon used for such purpose as defined in O.C.G.A. § 16-11-121.

Firearm means a handgun, rifle, shotgun, or other weapon which will or can be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or electrical charge.

Category II Weapon - Hazardous Object:

NOTE: Category II Weapon offenses are cumulative in grades K-4 and grades 5-8.

Hazardous object means any dirk, bowie knife, switchblade knife, ballistic knife, any other knife having a blade of two or more inches, straight-edge razor, razor blade, spring stick, knuckles, whether made from metal, thermoplastic, wood, or other similar material, blackjack, any bat, club, or other bludgeon-type weapon, or any flailing instrument consisting of two or more rigid parts connected in such a manner as to allow them to swing freely, which may be known as a nun chahka, nun chuck, nunchaku, shuriken, or fighting chain, or any disc, of whatever configuration, having at least two points or pointed blades which is designed to be thrown or propelled and which may be known as a throwing star or oriental dart, or any instrument of like kind, any nonlethal air gun, and any stun gun or taser as defined O.C.G.A. § 16-11-106 or any tool or instrument which the school administration could reasonably conclude as being used as a weapon or intended by the scholar to be used as a weapon and thus a violation of the intent of this Code of Conduct.

Scholar Questioning by Officials

Scholar Questioning by School Administrators: Administrators have the responsibility and authority to question scholars for the purpose of maintaining a safe and orderly school environment. Though it is important to inform parents about issues of concern, parental consent is not required prior to the questioning of scholars.

Scholar Interaction with Social Workers and Counselors: School Social Workers and Counselors must develop trusting relationships with the scholars they serve. Most interventions with scholars occur on an individual basis. There is a professional obligation to respect the privacy of their scholars. Parents and guardians should be aware that scholar conversations with social workers and counselors are confidential and are not disclosed to parents.

Department of Family and Child Services (DFCS): DFCS officials investigating suspected child abuse are permitted to conduct reasonable interviews and inspections of children. Notice to parents is neither required nor desirable when the subject of that investigation may be the parents. If the investigation involves suspected child abuse by individuals other than those residing in the child’s household, parents will be informed that such interviews are being requested. DFCS officials should contact the school to schedule an appropriate time to conduct reasonable interviews and inspections of children.

Law Enforcement: School Resource Officers (SROs) are permitted to question scholars at school without prior parental approval for non­criminal incidents. If SROs must question scholars for criminal incidents, they must follow criminal procedures as defined by their employing law enforcement agencies and state law. Law enforcement officers from other agencies investigating non­-school ­related matters may question scholars with the consent of the parent/guardian. Law enforcement officers who have a detention order or warrant for arrest, or states that the situation involves pursuit of a suspect linked to a felony crime may question scholars without parental consent.

Disciplinary Hearings

The Assistant Head of School may conduct informal due process hearings that may result in suspension. However, in any instance of a level three or level four infraction, the Assistant Head of School shall refer the scholar to the a Scholar Disciplinary Tribunal.

Scholar Disciplinary Tribunal

The Scholar Disciplinary Tribunal is presided over by an independent legal representative(s). This officer or group will hear evidence concerning charges of scholar misconduct, and if proven, may require consequences greater than a suspension from school.

The Disciplinary Tribunal may issue a short­-term suspension, long-­term suspension, or permanent expulsion of any scholar found to have violated the Code of Conduct. If a hearing is called, the scholar will be suspended from school until the hearing can be held. The hearing will be no later than ten (10) school days after the beginning of the suspension unless the parent and school mutually agree to an extension or the conduct of the scholar or parent causes a delay beyond the said ten (10) ­day period. Prior to the hearing, scholars and parents will receive a written notice of the meeting.

The scholar or parent is entitled to request the presence of a witness, present evidence, and have an attorney at the hearing. The Assistant Head of School should be notified forty-­eight (48) hours prior to the hearing of any witnesses or representatives that will be present. The decision of the Disciplinary Tribunal may be appealed by submitting a written notice of appeal to The Atlanta Public Schools’ Office of Discipline  within (10) calendar days from the date of the decision is made. The appeal should be sent to the attention of the The Atlanta Public Schools’ Office of Discipline within ten (10) days from the date the decision is made.

Teacher Protocols

Each teacher and/or grade level teams will develop, post, and implement a consistent discipline plan. Each teacher will use this plan to deal with minor classroom offenses. The plan will be based on the school­wide HERO expectations and tiered approach to discipline.

Each plan is expected to include but not limited to:

  1. Teaching, modeling, and role playing expectations
  2. Consistently Modeling appropriate behavior
  3. Posted Expectations (affirmative and developed with scholars)
  4. Incentives for good behavior
  5. Reminding scholar of class rule that has been violated
  6. Providing alternatives (Quiet space and/or time, etc.).
  7. Scholar­-teacher conference
  8. Time­out in the classroom

Parent Acknowledgment Quick Sheet

The Parent and Scholar Handbook (“Handbook”) contains important information about the policies, procedures, and programs of Centennial Academy. Scholars and parents should read the handbook at the start of the school year and keep the handbook for future reference. The full handbook is located at www.centennialacademycharter.org.


This abbreviated document details key aspects of the handbook. My initials and signature acknowledges that I have read the handbook, reviewed it with my scholar, and I agree to the terms outlined on this acknowledgment sheet. I understand that if I do not adhere to the terms my scholar’s placement at Centennial Academy may be jeopardized.

_______                All Centennial Academy families and potential families must comply with all admission and registration requirements

and deadlines set forth annually by the Enrollment Department. Failure to comply may result in the scholar’s

enrollment being rescinded.

_______                When a scholar is absent, he/she must bring a note to school signed by a parent/legal guardian or physician stating

the reason for the absence.  The note must be given to the Hero Desk Receptionist within 48 hours of returning to

school.

_______                Scholars can only be dropped off at the front door door between 7:15 am - 8:00 am. No scholars can be dropped off

at any other entrance or prior to 7:15 am.

_______                The instructional day begins promptly at 8:00 am. Any scholar arriving after 8:00 am will be marked tardy and must

                 be signed in by a parent/guardian.

_______                Elementary School Division dismissal begins at 3:00 pm daily. Middle School Division dismissal begins at 3:30 pm

daily. For the safety and security of all scholars, parents are not allowed to alter or interrupt the flow of the dismissal process. All parents must remain orderly, wait in line, and cooperate with all staff members. Parents are not allowed to enter the building during dismissal.

_______                For any scholar that is not picked up by 3:45 pm, the administrator on duty will attempt to contact a parent and/or

emergency contact. If contact is not made within 30 minutes, then the administrator will call the Atlanta Police Department who will make a determination if the situation warrants child abandonment and an appropriate call will be made to the Department of Family and Children Services.

_______                An accumulation of three late pick ups may result in enrollment revocation for out of zone scholars. In zone scholars

that have accumulated three late pick ups will be asked to show proof of enrollment in an approved after-school

program (Arthur Blank YMCA, MLK Center, or Boys & Girls Club).

_______                Parents wishing to change a scholar’s afternoon transportation route are required to complete a Change of

Transportation Form in Advance. Changes will only be honored if they are sent in writing. If the transportation change requires a person other than the parent/guardian to pick up, the designee may not sign a scholar out unless they are listed in Infinite Campus as an Emergency Contact and will be required to present a valid driver’s license or government issued ID.

_______                Early dismissals must be arranged in advance and will only be granted between the hours of 11:30 am and 2:15 pm.

An Early Dismissal Request form must be submitted. All parents/guardians or authorized designee must present a

valid driver’s license or government issued ID.

_______                The Centennial Academy Grievance Policy is established to address complaints or concerns associated

with the school, the school community, and its Board of Directors. Any individual bringing forth a complaint or concern must follow the procedures outlined in the Grievance Policy located in the full Parent and Scholar Handbook.

_______                Scholars are required to wear uniforms each day according the School Uniform Guidelines and Policy.        

_______                All visitors must report immediately to the Hero Welcome Desk to receive permission and instructions to visit in the

school. A visitors badge must be worn at all times.

_______                All visitors may request an appointment to meet with a member of the staff or to schedule a teacher conference by

emailing the individual directly and providing at least 24 - 48 hours advanced notice.

_______                No unscheduled meetings with any staff member, including teachers, will be permitted.

_______                No restaurant food may be delivered or brought to scholars or brought to the lunchroom. National School Lunch

Program regulations disallow “competitive food items.” Centennial Academy is a 100% nut-free school.

_______                All parents wishing to serve as chaperones must be cleared as a volunteer and have completed mandatory chaperon

training prior to the date of the trip.

_______                Centennial Academy will not assume the responsibility for any lost or stolen items.

_______                For inclement weather and emergency situations, please follow the decision and instructions shared directly by

Centennial Academy and not by APS.

_______                All scholars and parents must adhere to the Responsible Technology Use Policy to access technology for

educational purposes only.

_______                Centennial Academy scholars are not permitted to use personal electronic devices on campus. Cell phones should

not be on or visible on campus. Any cell phones brought to campus will be confiscated and the scholar will be assigned detention.

________        Infinite Campus is Centennial Academy’s official communication tool of attendance records and grades.

________        All scholars must adhere to the Centennial Academy Code of Conduct. Failure to do so may result in

suspension or expulsion.

________        No scholar shall engage in harassment, intimidation, or abuse of or toward any scholar(s), Centennial

Academy employees or other adults for any reason.

________        A scholar shall not possess, handle, transmit, or cause to be transmitted; use or threaten to use; sell,

attempt to sell, or conspire to sell a weapon, either concealed or open to view, on school property.

________        Acceptable attendance, behavior, and grades are required in order for scholars to remain eligible for

Enrollment. Failure to comply with the guidelines outline in the handbook may result in the start of the

revocation process for out of zone scholars (lottery admits).

Parent / Scholar Handbook Acknowledgement

Please complete and return within receipt of the Scholar and Parent Handbook.

The Parent and Scholar Handbook (“Handbook”) contains important information about the policies, procedures, and programs of Centennial Academy. Scholars and parents should read the handbook at the start of the school year and keep the handbook for future reference. Each of the undersigned hereby acknowledges having read and received the Handbook for the year set forth. Each parent/guardian named below has also received, read, and discussed the requirements of the Handbook with his/her scholar, including but not limited to the code of conduct, disciplinary procedures, dress code, and the requirements of and penalties for violation of Georgia’s compulsory attendance law, and each parent/guardian and scholar named below agree to fully abide by the same.

My signature acknowledges that I have read the handbook and reviewed it with my scholar, and I agree to the terms in this handbook and understand that if I do not adhere to the terms my scholar’s placement at Centennial Academy may be jeopardized.
