Welcome!

Who We Are

We are your friends and neighbors.

We are proud Tillamook County Democrats.

We support and elect Democrats who promote values and policies that improve the lives of all Oregonians.

We support healthy communities, a clean environment, racial equity, economic opportunity, quality education, affordable healthcare.

We encourage truth and factual information in government.

From Our Chair:

Things went well for Tillamook County Democrats in this most recent primary election, and we are grateful to our candidates and volunteers for that. But a lot more went well with this election than is apparent from the vote totals. Here are some other things for which we are grateful:

  • The atmosphere between candidates and backers of various measures was generally civil, on both sides. Thank you. From what we could tell, this was true even on social media, where civility is often in terribly short supply. This article will help you understand why we are committed to improving that situation.

  • The strength of our electoral system, especially here in Oregon and Tillamook County, was proven yet again. Thank you to County Clerk Tassi O’Neil and all the county employees and volunteers who helped make that happen.
  • Good will and trust were apparent on all sides of the process. One of our election observers (who pair with Republican observers to watch votes being counted), told us at a gathering Tuesday night about a conversation she had with her Republican counterpart who happened to be the GOP county party chair, and who agreed that the system here works well. Thank you, Mike Sears.

  • We are grateful to the losing candidates, not because they lost but because they had enough faith in the electoral process to try. We also appreciate their willingness to accept that they lost, fair and square. Thank you.

And in case you are wondering, we do know that the reason we won this time had very little to do with strategy or skill on our part. We credit instead the connections that our volunteers made with voters, in all kinds of ways. Thank you.

If some other county did better, please let us know. We would like to learn how they did it!

Participation Makes Democracy Work !!

So many hands and hearts came together during the primary campaign and election to support Democratic values and goals. The Tillamook County Democrats would like to thank the following for their dedicated efforts in communicating these values and goals to our community and emphasizing the importance of voting:

Precinct Committeepersons (PCPs) for reaching out to and inspiring their constituents

Candidates for the courage and dedication to take on a huge responsibility

Tillamook County Clerk Tassi O’Neil and her staff and volunteer election watchers for overseeing and ensuring a fair election process

Volunteers working for the A Just Right Political Action Committee for bringing awareness to the importance of defeating ballot measure 29-161

Letter-to-the-Editor writers who voiced their opinions in support of TillCoDems endorsed candidates and positions on ballot measures

TillCoDems officers and committee members for their commitment to positive process and outcomes

And thank you VOTERS for your vital participation in our democracy!

Teamwork Keeps Our TillCoDems Machine Humming !

During this recent primary campaign, dozens of TillCoDems PCPs and volunteers worked with our various committees to support candidates and issue positions and to get out the vote. Membership recruited, organized, guided, and inspired our PCPs in communication with their precinct voters; Communications disseminated our values and goals via website, emails, newsletters, Facebook, media ads, slate card, and event signage; Elections provided support to candidates and measures through canvassing with our slate card and putting up campaign signage, and organized primary eve/day election watches; Legislative created formal TillCoDems’ approved resolutions that advanced our support of measures; Neighborhood Leaders personally contacted voters in their neighborhoods encouraging them to vote and support Dems-backed candidates and measure positions; Fundraising/Events presented the TillCoDems mission and message at the Home and Garden Show (see related article); Governance kept us all on our toes by monitoring adherence to bylaws and policies; Special Interest Groups kept us informed about efforts by outside organizations that matched our primary election goals; and, of course, Infrastructure … how could we get along without them? They did all the behind-the-scenes work on all things technological – the oil that keeps all the many gears moving and working together smoothly.  What an amazing machine!

TillCoDems Show Up

at

2022 Tillamook Home and Garden Show

Tillamook County Democrats, under the capable leadership of Events Chair Susan Pierce, helped to spread friendship and good community vibes at the Headlight Herald 2022 Home and Garden Show. A dozen Dems showed up to help with set-up on Friday, enjoying each other’s company (some of us had not met in-person before!) and getting the Dems’ booth looking beautiful with flowers, banners, raffle items, flower seed bag give-aways, and primary campaign information. During the two-day event, 16 TillCoDems in two-hour shifts engaged with show attendees, talking about candidates and issues and just generally showing TillCoDems’ true colors of neighborliness, kindness, caring, and listening (along with a few of Mark’s groaner jokes…ha!).  Candidates Logan Laity and Melissa Busch spent time in the booth greeting folks and spreading goodwill. Thanks to Susan for all her planning and coordination and to all who helped. It was time well-spent for all who participated and a great way to welcome Spring!

Tillamook County
Neighborhood Leader Program

For someone who cares about community building, serving as a Neighborhood Leader is the easiest and most rewarding way to be involved in the Democratic Party. We give you a list of the 35 households nearest your home address that contain at least one registered Democrat. Your list will have contact information (street and mailing addresses, phone numbers, email, etc.) as well as a map showing where they are in relation to you.

You start just by introducing yourself as the Democratic Party's Neighborhood Leader for your little area. Some of us do that by texting or calling, some of us send postcards, some of us leave cards on doorsteps or sticky notes on doors, and some of us even walk up and knock! Do what feels safe and comfortable for you.

From that point, we trust you to build relationships. You already know how to do this. Learn more about it in 4-minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZeD8AWIQPU

Deep Read of the Month for May 2022

On the third Thursday of every month we change our usual Short Read of the Week discussion format to allow for more in-depth discussion of one article or subject. This month we read Why The Last 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid, from last month’s issue of The Atlantic. It was written by Jonathan Haidt, who is arguably the country’s foremost researcher and thinker on the subject of political polarization and dysfunction. The article has important implications for how we function as a county political party. Please read it and share it with your friends.

 Short Reads of the Month

for May 2022

Our Communications Committee hosts an article discussion group on Zoom every Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. We talk about all the short articles suggested by Tillamook County Democrats during the week, and at the end of the meeting we choose one or two articles that will be recommended on our website and social media pages as essential reading for every Tillamook County Democrat. These are the articles we have chosen to recommend since the last issue of this newsletter:

The takeaway? Americans DO NOT blame Biden for inflation, nor should they.

Pay attention to what the article above says about who, at long last, is doing something about this problem.

“Many environmental advocates and academics believe mechanical thinning projects, unless surgically applied, are an ineffective, expensive, Sisyphean solution that damages forest soils, removes carbon and needs to be regularly revisited as smaller trees and vegetation grow back. They believe such treatments actually increase fire risks by opening up the canopy, drying out the soil and allowing wind driven fires to spread faster. They say federal funding would be best spent on helping make homes more fire safe and launching defensible space projects in at-risk communities“

Hold Up the TillCoDems by Becoming a Pillar!!

A very simple and effective way to help the TillCoDems is by becoming a Pillar of the Party.  Pillars are donors who make a monetary contribution each month for at least three months in a row.  It can be as little as $5 per month, which for a year adds up to $60!  That’s a generous gift and would go a long way to supporting the TillCoDems important work, like helping elect Democrats and communicating Democratic values and accomplishments (advertising, printing, postage, technology, insurance, etc).  And if it works for you to donate $10 each month … Wow!  $120 for the year! You can sign up for any monthly amount you are comfortable with on the TillCoDems website.  At the top of the website, click on the DONATE button in the upper right corner.  Under “Make it monthly!,” click on “Yes, count me in!” and then follow the prompts.  After three months, and with your permission, you’ll see your name listed on the “Our Supporters” page of the website under “Pillars of the Party.” https://tillcodems.org/supporters TillCoDems will be so grateful for your help!
