Enrollment (University)

  • College Bound students are advised to take a rigorous college prep course load.
  • Colleges suggest 4 years of English,

Math, Science, Social Studies and 4 years of other academic electives, such a foreign language, computer science, fine arts, etc., for the best chance of success.

  • Be aware of what is on your transcript.
  • Be aware of your scholarship opportunities.
  • Review information from the specific colleges you have an interest in.
  • When in doubt, review your academic plans with your counselor.

Enrollment (Technical College)

  • Technical schools have an entrance exam.
  • A third year of math and science is recommended for success on entrance exams.
  • Certain programs require you to take certain high school courses and sometimes maintain a “C” or better.
  • Deadlines for some programs fill early, be prepared to apply in early fall of your senior year or spring of your junior year.

Enlistment

Art

The art curriculum has been developed for and is offered to the student who has shown evidence of a special talent, interest, and creative potential in art.  

There are four means for experiencing art: ART MAKING, ART CRITICISM, ART HISTORY AND AESTHETICS.  The student will create art through the application of skills, techniques and processes appropriate to art media.

ART CONTENT: Drawing, Painting, Pottery, Printmaking, Sculpture, Crafts and Fibers.

The art classes will include sketchbook assignments, lecture, discussion, demonstration, critiques, studio experience, independent study, research and small group activity.

DESCRIPTION: ART I is a foundation course and involves basic art experiences.  It is a balance between art activities that center on acquisition of knowledge and skills and those that center on creativity.

DESCRIPTION: This course will introduce students to art elements and principles of design. A variety of art forms will be explored including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, and sculpture.


Business and Marketing Education

 DESCRIPTION: Within this course, students will learn about the four managerial functions (planning, organizing, controlling, and leading) in contemporary organizations. A series of self-assessment questionnaires provide insights into personal behaviors and help students turn managerial theories into potential personal managerial practices.

DESCRIPTION:  The essential concepts covered in a High School Financial Planning program include:  goal setting, needs and wants, gross income and net income, managing income and spending, credit and managing debt along with tools for saving.  This course can be counted towards 1.0 of math.

DESCRIPTION: The following topics will be covered in this course:  The functions of marketing which include, selling, promotion, pricing, distribution, risk management, and financing.   In addition to the marketing functions video advertising will be incorporated into the class in order for students to apply target marketing concepts.    Field trips, video presentations and guest speakers will also be an integral part of this course.

DESCRIPTION: Consumer Law focuses on a variety of legal issues.  Students learn how our nation’s laws were formed and how criminal and civil laws differ.  Binding Agreements, laws for special groups like consumers, property laws, and insurance issues will be discussed.  Special features such as “How to deal with an attorney” and “ What to do in Small Claims Court” will also be discussed.

Computer Science

COURSE NAME: Computer 9 (Information Technology)

DESCRIPTION:  Microsoft Office 365 will be completely explored in this class.  Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Databases and Powerpoint presentations will be covered.  This class will provide a sound knowledge of the Office 365

COURSE NAME: Graphic Design, Illustration and Beginning Web Design

OPEN TO: 9-12

PREREQUISITE: None

DESCRIPTION: Learn Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop – two programs used widely throughout the art, business, scientific, design and multimedia industries. Build artwork in Illustrator and Photoshop. Find out what your digital camera is capable of and how to improve and artistically alter your pictures using Photoshop. Learn the basics of web design using Dreamweaver.  Don’t pay big bucks for this knowledge years from now! Learn it now while you’re still young, and while it’s free!

COURSE NAME: Digital Photography

DESCRIPTION: Digital photography will focus on taking and making great digital photographs.  Students will learn advanced camera features and how to shoot the perfect picture.  Students will also learn skills that will enhance their creativity.   


School Counseling

COURSE NAME: Careers 11

DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to help students learn more about themselves as well as explore a variety of career pathways. In addition to future career planning, students will learn skills that will be helpful in adulthood. Some of the activities will include a mock interview, income tax preparation simulation, budgeting, investing for retirement, and buying a car/home.

COURSE NAME: Teacher Assistant

CREDIT: .5 - 1.0

OPEN TO: 12

PREREQUISITE:  Students who are in good standing and have demonstrated dependability, responsibility and the ability to work without supervision.

DESCRIPTION: Students will be assisting teachers or office personnel with a variety of activities.  Attendance is vital and is considered heavily in grading.  Grading is on a pass/fail and is not included in GPA.

COURSE NAME:  Work-Study

CREDIT: .5 - 1.0

OPEN TO: 12

PREREQUISITE: Students must be on track for graduation and have an excellent attendance record. In addition, a student should be participating in the Youth Apprenticeship program (if possible).

DESCRIPTION:  If interested in participating in Work-Study, a student should meet with the counselor to pick up a Work Study application as well as determine whether Youth Apprenticeship enrollment is possible. Attendance is vital and is considered heavily in grading.  Grading is on a pass/fail and is not included in GPA.


Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS)

COURSE NAME: Foods & Nutritional Science (Foods I & II)

DESCRIPTION:  This class is designed to introduce basic cooking skills to incorporate healthy choices and lifestyles through understanding the nutritional science behind foods and cooking methods.  Students will learn about nutritional content, sanitary food preparations, family meal planning, and opportunities to make a wide variety of healthy quick meals and snacks.  Students will safely use:  Brazing torch, ovens, knives, food processor attachments, shredders, and other sharps and kitchen equipment. 

 

COURSE NAME: Child Development

CREDIT: .5 (3 credits from CVTC)

DESCRIPTION:  This course will be transcribed with Chippewa Valley Technical College.  We will examine the different styles and theories of parenting.  Students will study the different developmental stages of children and learn how to handle the conflict that sometimes arises from these differences.  Students will also look at the importance of good parenting, and understand the skills needed to be a good parent. 


Language Arts

COURSE NAME: 9th Grade English

DESCRIPTION: Ninth Grade English will focus on literature, writing, vocabulary, and oral presentation components.  Students will study various aspects of literature through short stories, poetry, drama, and novels.  Students will also continue working through the writing process by completing several writing assignments and improving computer skills.  Vocabulary and grammar study continue to be  components of the class as they were in junior high grades.

DESCRIPTION: Tenth Grade English continues to focus on literature including mythology, short stories, novels, and drama.  Students also continue honing their writing and computer skills through the writing process, and developing their speaking skills through a formal speech unit.  Several types of writing projects are completed this year, including persuasion and compare/contrast.  This class will write a 3 page, MLA style, research paper, as well.  Grammar and vocabulary work will be studied, practiced and reinforced throughout the class.

DESCRIPTION: Eleventh Grade English is a block class.  Therefore, the work of an entire year is consolidated into 1 semester. This class contains an overview of American Literature through the combination of nonfiction and fiction selections.  Attention will be drawn to common themes and genres that are rooted in the American experience.  The class includes multiple writing components, including a 3 page,  MLA style, research paper. The class also continues the reinforcement of computer skills, vocabulary, and grammar usage. Formal speaking opportunities remain a component of the class by way of various oral presentations.


COURSE NAME: English 12: College Prep

DESCRIPTION:  College Prep English is designed for students planning to continue their formal education after high school.  This class will contain an overview of British Literature through the combination of fiction/nonfiction, short stories, drama and novel selections.  The class emphasizes advanced writing, research, and grammar skills, as well as, the expert use of computer technology for all written assignments. The class requires a 3 page, MLA style, research paper.  Students also write an autobiography in College Prep English.  The class will  continue to practice and reinforce vocabulary and grammar skills, along with components of formal speaking.

 

COURSE NAME: Practical English 12

DESCRIPTION:  Practical 12 English is a block class.  Therefore, the work of an entire year is consolidated into 1 semester.  Practical 12 English is designed to present senior level academic assignments that meet the needs of every level of senior in the class.  Along with the routine components of the English language, the class also emphasizes the improvement of organizational and decision making skills. Most assignments of the class are project based and fellow student dependent which means that assignments are completed in the classroom during the class time provided. This class continues an emphasis on functional English skills including the reinforcement of strong writing skills, proper grammar usage, vocabulary study, and usable communication skills. Practical 12 English uses all of the elements of English that students have learned in previous years.  The class includes various types of literature and opportunities for writing including a direction unit, a written communication unit, a speaking unit, short writing assignments, and an autobiography.  


Math

COURSE NAME: General Math I

DESCRIPTION:  The following topics will be covered in this course: Interpreting Data, Geometry, Applications of Decimals, Introduction to Algebra, Measurement, Patterns and Functions, Number Theory, Fraction Applications, Reasoning with Proportions, Probability and Graphing in the Coordinate Plane.

COURSE NAME:  General Math II

DESCRIPTION:  This course will continue with some of the basic themes taught in General Math I.  

COURSE NAME: Algebra I

CREDIT: 2 credits – 1 considered math and 1 elective

DESCRIPTION: The following topics will be covered in this course: Working with Real Numbers, Solving Equations and Problems, Polynomials, Factoring Polynomials, Fractions, Applying Fractions, Introduction to Functions, Systems of Linear Equations, Inequalities, Rational and Irrational Numbers and Quadratic Functions.  The course will also give an introduction to such topics as Probability, Statistics, Geometry and Trigonometry.

COURSE NAME: Algebra II

CREDIT: 1

OPEN TO: 10, 11, 12 and 9th graders who have completed Algebra 1 for credit.

PREREQUISITE: Algebra 1

DESCRIPTION: Algebra II is a more in depth study of Algebra focusing on the following topics: Inequalities, Polynomials, Rational Expressions, Irrational and Complex Numbers, Quadratic Equations and Functions and Variation of Polynomial Equations.


COURSE NAME: Geometry/Trigonometry

CREDIT: 1

PREREQUISITE: Algebra 2

DESCRIPTION: Geometry will study fundamental geometry concepts: points, lines, planes, and angles through logical thinking.  This will enable students to master complex topics such as area, volume of solids and inequalities.  Formal and informal reasoning skills will be used which provide students with a good foundation in theory and application.  Right triangle Trigonometry topics will also be introduced.

COURSE NAME: Advanced Math 1

PREREQUISITE: Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry/Trigonometry

DESCRIPTION: Advanced Math 1 will provide a strong foundation in pre-calculus concepts, techniques and applications.  Concentrations will be in Linear, Quadratic and Polynomial Functions, Inequalities, Exponents and Logarithms and a thorough coverage of Trigonometric concepts.


Music

COURSE NAME: Symphonic Band

CREDIT: 1

PREREQUISITE: Junior High Band Participation

DESCRIPTION: The Symphonic Band provides the opportunity for students to experience many different styles of music, including classical, jazz, and rock styles.  Students will study the style, compositional techniques, history, and culture of the works they are performing.  Students will also develop team-building skills.  The Symphonic Band performs 3 concerts a year, participates in a Large Group Festival/Clinic, marches at the Laura Days Parade, and performs as a Pep Band at all home conference sporting events.   Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the Solo and Ensemble Festival held in April and a combined jazz band with Alma.  Students are required to have a set amount of lessons each quarter with the instructor.

COURSE NAME: Senior High Choir

DESCRIPTION:  Senior High Chorus is a performance class. Music for study is selected from vocal literature of the different historical periods of music, including contemporary styles.  Students will review, expand, and apply concepts of (but not limited to): music theory, history, and style.  The Chorus performs 3 to 4 scheduled concerts per year, plus at various civic events and clinics around the state, including Large Group Contest.  Additional opportunities for solo and small group study are encouraged, including Honors Choirs, vocal jazz and solo & ensemble.  Attendance for all concerts is required, and classroom attendance is vital to grading. Grading is based upon attitude, effort, lessons, and attendance.

Drama

COURSE NAME: Drama

DESCRIPTION: The class includes: Team work, relaxation, concentration, voice,acting, improvisation, character analysis, performance, scene work, monologues, audition skills, some basic theater vocabulary, and movie reviews.  If acting and group speaking are not your strong points, join us for working with sets and pre-performance marketing.  We will work towards a stage/production near the end of 1st semester.  

Physical Education

COURSE NAME: Fitness and Sport Management

DESCRIPTION: Hey all fitness fanatics. Or those maybe looking to get 10,000 steps a day and work on your overall strength. Do you have an interest in promoting our school athletic teams? This is the class for you.  Design your own workouts or follow a program prescribed by Mr. Ingli.  The workout part of the class will take place 3 days a week.  The other 2 days, our class will focus on specific sport management items.  Everything from taking pictures at athletic events, writing and researching sports articles, helping set up our athletic fields and courts, and even painting the Eagle mascot on the field.  This course will have something for the competitive athlete all the way down to a person who would like to remain behind the scenes.

DESCRIPTION:  This class will focus on lifetime sports such as Bowling, Archery, Angling, Golf, Hiking, and Orienteering, Ice Skating, Cross Country Skiing, Outdoor Survival, Downhill Skiing, Cycling, Lawn sports, Biomechanics, Wall Climbing and Repelling and Sports Officiating.

DESCRIPTION:  This class will focus on lifetime sports such as Bowling, Archery, Angling, Golf, Hiking, and Orienteering, Ice Skating, Cross Country Skiing, Outdoor Survival, Downhill Skiing, Cycling, Lawn sports, Biomechanics, Wall Climbing and Repelling and Sports Officiating.  Lifetime Sports II students will be expected to submit a required research paper to gain the one credit.

DESCRIPTION:  Health education is a basic ingredient in a prevention formula.  It can encourage the individual and the community to assume responsibility for the promotion of well-being and the prevention of disease and disability. The physical, emotional, social, and intellectual dimensions of each person are dynamically intertwined and are influenced by time, setting, situation, and other people. We identify ten major content areas as basic components of a comprehensive school health education program.  They are: Accident Prevention and Safety; Community Health; Consumer Health; Environmental Health; Family Life Education; Mental and Emotional Health; Nutrition; Personal Health; Prevention and Control of Disease; Substance Use and Abuse.

COURSE NAME: Speed and Strength (Formerly Weight Lifting)

CREDIT:  1

OPEN TO: 11-12

PREREQUISITE:  PE 9, PE 10

The course will consist of various daily activities designed to build students’ strength and speed levels. Students will go through a circuit of lifts each day, as well as plyometric (jumping exercises) and agility. Students are expected to participate to the best of their ability each day. This includes days when students may have a game or practice for the sport that they participate in. One day of the week, usually Friday, will be a “Game Day” where students will play a fitness game.


Science

COURSE NAME: Physical Science

DESCRIPTION:  This course introduces the general principles of physics and chemistry. Topics include measurement, Newton's laws of motion, momentum, energy, work, power, structure of atoms, the periodic table principles, and other chemistry principles. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the physical environment and be able to apply the scientific principles to observations experienced.

COURSE NAME: General Biology

DESCRIPTION: This course consists of three basic units. The first unit emphasizes biological communities and ecosystems, exploring the interactions between organisms and the living and nonliving components of their environments. The second unit provides the facts and concepts of cellular biology. Included in this unit is a brief overview of Biochemistry specific for cellular activity. The third unit lays the foundation for taxonomy and introduces the fundamental phylogenetic relationships among major groups of living organisms. DESCRIPTION: Physics is the study of the inter-relationship of matter and energy.  Topics in Physics proceed from simple observations, often-everyday phenomena, and move toward abstract generalizations along clear and logical paths of thought.  Students will develop a strong foundation in Kinematics.  Other topics that may be addressed include electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, and Modern Physics if time allows.  This course is highly desirable for college bound students.

DESCRIPTION:  This course will cover eight units, which are representative of basic themes often examined in U.S. History.  The eight units of the course include "Two Worlds and their Meeting in America", "Crisis Leading to the American Revolution", "Molding of a Nation-the U.S. Constitution", "Reform Movements in U.S. History", "The Civil War and Reconstruction", "Forces in the Development of Modern America", "The Cold War Years", (World War I and II are covered extensively during the World Civilization course), and "The Civil Rights Movement".  As with the World Civilization course, U.S. History will also focus on linking geography to history through the five basic themes of geography.  This course will also continue to address important history study skills as well as utilize the rhetorical modes of writing in essays that are required of the students.

Under s118.55 Stats: Any public school pupil enrolled who has completed the 10th grade, is in good academic standing, and who meets notification requirements under PI 40 may apply to attend a technical college or 4 year college for the purpose of taking one or more courses.
