EXTERNAL SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED ANNUALLY

Many of the scholarships that students end up winning are connected to sports or cultural groups. They can be connected to parents’ places of work and religious groups. Students and families must do their own research. Most of those scholarships have deadlines that occur in the new year.

This list is by no means exhaustive but it is a list of more major awards that our students have won in the past. Be patient because some of the websites have not yet been updated for the current year but the links are active.

The following Four Scholarships are offered by the BC Ministry of Education. STMC students have won these in the past.

1. BC Achievement Scholarships BC Achievement Scholarships recognize the top 8000 graduates in the province. The Ministry will determine recipients based on achievement in Grades 10, 11, and 12 courses that satisfy 2004 Graduation Program requirements, including elective courses. A cumulative average percentage will be calculated and form the basis for determining winners, who receive a $1250 scholarship voucher to use towards their post-secondary tuition. Students do not apply for this scholarship.

2. Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship   The Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship is awarded to 20 outstanding high school graduates who have demonstrated a commitment and aptitude for a career path in K-12 teaching. Winners receive a $5000 scholarship voucher to redeem when they are registered and attending an approved K-12 teacher education program at one of BC’s nine Faculties of Education. 3.  District/Authority Scholarships There are 5500 District/Authority Scholarships distributed across school districts and independent school authorities that recognize graduating B.C. students for excellence in their chosen area of interest or strength. Winners will receive a $1250 scholarship voucher to use towards their post-secondary tuition.  Application details

These awards acknowledge academics but also recognize a student's accomplishments in a wide range of fields:

All students will be asked to give a presentation about themselves either virtually or in

person sometime in the spring. STMC has a history of enjoying great success winning these awards. At his time the application form is not yet available from the Ministry.

4. BC Excellence Scholarships are awarded by the BC Ministry of Education. There are 55 scholarships available province-wide but STMC can only nominate one student. Any STMC student interested in applying for this scholarship must complete and submit a STMC BC Excellence Scholarship Nomination Form by January of the new year..

Potential nominees must have demonstrated service and leadership, both at school and in their communities, and shown aptitude for and commitment to their chosen career paths. Once all applications have been received, a panel made up of STMC staff and administration will determine who will be the school’s nominee. The nominee will be notified and must submit the completed formal application to the Ministry of Education by February .

TD Community Leadership Scholarships Due November

TD is committed to opening doors for a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow, creating conditions so everyone has the chance to succeed in a changing world. Unique in Canada, the TD Scholarships for Community Leadership are offered to students who, like TD, help support change, nurture progress and contribute to making the world a better place. Have you shown exceptional initiative in making a meaningful and lasting difference in your community? Then they want to hear from you, as you may qualify for one of their Community Scholarships. It’s not just about marks in the classroom, but rather the marks you have made on your community.

Schulich Scholarships   These awards are hugely competitive. Interested applicants must be heading into a STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH) related program. Applicants must meet the following criteria

• Graduate high school in the 2022/2023 academic year

• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

• Plan to enroll in STEM at one of our partner universities

• Students must Not be planning a career as a medical practitioner

Meet at least two of the following criteria:  

             1. Academic Excellence

2. Leadership (community, business or entrepreneurial)

3. Financial Need

STMC can only nominate one individual, so interested candidates must first submit a STMC Schulich Nomination Application Form to the Academic Counsellor by January 10, 2023.  A nomination committee made up of department heads, teachers and administration team members will choose the one nominee! Beedie Luminaries Scholarship Deadline January The Beedie Luminaries Scholarship supports resilient students facing financial adversity who have the academic readiness and desire to create positive change in their lives. Scholarship recipients join a strong, diverse, well connected support network of Beedie Luminaries students and future program alumni, as well as community leaders and mentors.  

Uggla Family Scholarship - SFU

These scholarships are awarded to students who face significant financial barriers to participation in post-secondary education. This may include students who identify as Indigenous, Black, or a person of colour, students living with disabilities, LGBTQIA2S+ students, and students of all gender identities. The intent of the Uggla Family Scholarship is to promote equality and remove historical and existing discrimination, including barriers to full participation in social, cultural, economic and political life.

Other eligibility criteria include:

        Being admitted to SFU as a domestic applicant.

        Demonstrated academic excellence and outstanding potential to be a future leader through

        personal achievements or contributions to their school or community.

Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards Deadline: December  To be considered, applicants must meet be: Canadian citizens or landed immigrants in good academic standing and involved in voluntary humanitarian activities (for which they have not been compensated). Applicants must plan to study first university degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution in the upcoming academic year.

Re/Max Quest for Excellence Deadline: spring

Sixteen $1,000.00 bursaries are awarded. This award involves writing a 1250 word essay that describes the contributions they have made to their communities and students should demonstrate their leadership, motivation and communication skills.  Other attributes may include volunteering, participation in charitable events or fundraising, and contributions that enrich the lives of others and their communities.

South Burnaby Metro Bursary Deadline April 15, 2024 (must be received in the mail by deadline)

If a STMC student has participated in the South Burnaby Metro Athletic Program for three or more years, they might qualify for a bursary. These awards are available every spring. To get more information go to South Burnaby Metro Bursary.

The Engineers and Geoscientists BC Foundation Scholarship Deadline Not yet Updated (current website information indicates June 30 but verify the details) The Engineers and Geoscientists BC Foundation offers several entry scholarships to British Columbia high school graduates entering engineering or Earth science programs at the University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University, British Columbia Institute of Technology, and the University of Northern British Columbia. The entry scholarships are awarded based on a combination of factors, including academic standing, extracurricular activities, financial need, and a student statement. Not yet updated for 2021-22.

Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame Deadline:Spring

Students must be Burnaby residents and must have made significant accomplishments in athletics, These awards are available every spring; however, the 2022 applications are not available yet..

BC School Sports Scholarships BCSS is pleased to announce the renewal of the following scholarships: BCSS Zone Scholarships, Dave Gifford Memorial Scholarships, Bert & Quartermaine Badminton Scholarship and the BC Dairy scholarship.

Confratellanza Italo-Canadese Scholarship Application Application will be made available in the spring. Open to students of Italian origin i.e. having at least one parent or grandparent of direct Italian descent and have an academic standing sufficient to qualify for entry into the post secondary institution of their choice.

BCGEU Scholarship Awards (applications will be available in the spring) The BC Government and Service Employees' Union is offering $45,000 in scholarship awards, $3,000 for full- time students and $2,000 for part-time students who are BCGEU members or relatives of BCGEU members or staff. Applications will not be available until the new year.

Pacific Leaders Scholarship for Children of Public Servants Applicants must have at least one parent who is a full- or part-time regular employee of a BC Public Service employer. This includes all ministries and any organization that is enabled under the Public Service Act. Applicants must also have a solid academic standing (minimum B grade average or above for Grades 10 to 12) and plan to study a trade or do technical/vocational training or an undergraduate degree at a designated school or university located in B.C.

BC Hockey Scholarship   Awarded to current registered members of BC Hockey who demonstrate academic achievement,sportsmanship, high quality of participation and contribution in hockey, and school and community participation and service.(Applications open Jan. 7, 2022)

RBC Royal Bank Scholarship Awards for Undergraduates Various deadlines Scholarships for children of RBC employees is due early May)  A variety of scholarships of various amounts are available! .

BC Hydro Scholarships BC Hydro offers a wide variety of scholarships, endowments, and bursaries. Many are offered to specific institutions. Prospective applicants are encouraged to read the website for further details.

Cmolik Foundation Scholarship Deadline: February  The Cmolik Foundation offers a scholarship up to the amount of $35000 for students who: have met adversity during their life, demonstrated a good work ethic, tenacity, and other commendable attributes in achieving their academic and social goals; and without the scholarship's support may not have the means to attend a post-secondary institution.

Candidates must have lived in BC for eight years and must be nominated by the school (STMC can only nominate one student). Completed applications must be received by February 7, 2022; therefore, students interested in receiving a school nomination must contact the Academic Counseling office by mid-January.

Clean Energy BC Scholarship Clean Energy BC (CEBC) is pleased to be offering a student scholarship of $1,000. The scholarship is available for students who are interested in pursuing a future in clean energy at a post-secondary institution.
