Some say a picture is worth a thousand words. This one requires a little explanation.
This photo represents six "generations" of evangelism and discipleship at Waynesburg University and later at the University of Kentucky. The photo was taken at the CCO's annual Jubilee Conference for college students in Pittsburgh. Six years earlier, I (Chuck) began to mentor CCO staff member, Bryan, who was the Resident Director in Thayer Hall, a men's residence hall. (Bryan was photo-shopped in since he was then in in seminary.)
Bryan led Dan (second from the left) to Christ after he attended a small group that Bryan and I led with some football players in Bryan's dorm. After graduating, Dan volunteered with Intervarsity at the University of Kentucky where he discipled Matt (center). After Dan left UK to work for the CCO at Ohio State, Matt discipled John. Later, John led Nick (far right) to Christ and began to disciple him.
Obviously, this photo is not something that would normally occur. Instead, our relationships are going to be more like the "Stranger" video you just watched. If we are like Lisa, and we allow God to use us to reach a friend like Kim, we will maybe get to meet and reach out to a few of "Kim's" friends too. But that's probably going to be it.
Regardless, God is the one who initiates transformation in each of us. So, we can relax and just begin to reach out to some of the people that God places in our lives. God will take it from there. I often think our efforts to reach others are sometimes as simple as the little boy in John 6:9 who handed his loaves and fish to the disciples -- he just gave what he had. And in the end, whether Jesus uses what we give back to him to feed 5,000, 500, 50, or even just 5, well that's not something you and I have to worry about.
