The Phil Lawler Summer Classic
For 28 years, Phil Lawler coached baseball at Naperville Central High School. As pitching coach with Hall of Fame head coach Bill Seiple, the duo taught the game of baseball and much more than that - the game of life - to Naperville’s youth. Phil is also a member of the Illinois Coaches Hall of Fame.
Phil was the summer tournament director since 1984. Along with Bill Seiple, they are responsible for making the tournament a success. Starting with 16 schools in 1976, the tournament had grown to 103 schools by the 2019 tournament.
In 1989, Naperville Central won the IHSBCA summer tournament, which now bears Phil’s name. Phil’s Redhawks, finished second on four occasions and Central has had 12 other Final Four finishes in the 41 years of the tournament.
Many had the pleasure and privilege to know Phil Lawler for a number of years. The always present smile and the desire to talk about the game of baseball were Lawler’s trademarks. Many baseball fans had great conversations about the game Phil loved.
Coach Lawler passed away in the spring of 2010 after a long battle with cancer. His love for family, friends and the game of baseball were evident throughout this battle. Only weeks after his death the Redhawks would be crowned 2010 4A State Champions. As the team held high the state trophy, a sign with the familiar number 29 was also held high.
The IHSBCA Summer State Tournament will be forever known as the Phil Lawler Summer Classic.

The Jack Kaiser MVP Award
Coach Jack Kaiser coached baseball, football and basketball at Oak Park-River Forest High School. He never had a sick day in his entire career. He coached generations of players and is considered a legend in high school baseball. In his 47 years and six decades of coaching varsity baseball, he holds the most wins in a career in Illinois, and second most in the nation with 892. He guided Oak Park-River Forest High School to the State Championship in 1981 and won more state tournament games than any other coach. His spring teams appeared in the state finals eight times.
In addition to his winning records Jack Kaiser was inducted into four Halls of Fame, and was honored as “Coach of the Year” seven times. In February of 2000, he was selected as “Coach of the Century” by the IHSBCA.
The most important award that Coach Kaiser ever received was the testimonial of those who knew him. Jack had a passion for life that few of us could ever expect to enjoy. He lived for over 12 years with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but he never let it show. His penchant for doing things “the right way” on and off the field and his love of competing against the best was infectious to those around him. His buoyant enthusiasm and total dedication to the game and its players always brought unforgettable spirit to the Illinois high school baseball season. Anyone who ever watched the Oak Park-River Forest Huskies play baseball under Coach Kaiser could see the hustle and determination in his players. When players asked longtime assistant Dick Trout what they could do for him, he replied “You can honor the man with the proper attitude not only on the field but in the locker room, classroom and home.”
He was a man of simple beliefs: Always leave a place better than you found it. You should always give 100% and never give up. You learn something every day of your life. Stand up for what you believe in. Do things the right way. He was always supportive, positive, and loving. He used hard work, discipline, enthusiasm, and humor to teach. He was a mentor to so many.
IHSBCA History
The first meeting of baseball coaches to organize the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association took place in 1965. Jay Sanders of Highland Park High School was the first President and Ron Klein of New Trier High School was the first Vice-President. The first Executive Board Members were Jack Kaiser of Oak Park-River Forest High School, Jim Phipps of Niles High School, and Claire Lossin of Riverside Brookfield High School. Other significant coaches involved in the formation of the IHSBCA included Ken McGonagle of Evanston High School and Jack Mallory of Waukegan High School.
The organization was originally formed to allow seniors that were left off of American Legion rosters an opportunity to play in the summer. This was sanctioned by the IHSA.
At the time, Les Miller, the Head Baseball Coach of the University of Illinois at Chicago was holding annual clinics for coaches. He agreed to share his clinic with the IHSBCA. Thus, the birth of our present day coaches’ clinic. The first clinic was held at Oak Park-River Forest High School. Since then, many high school and college coaches have contributed to the success and growth of our clinics.
One of the first actions of the IHSBCA was to petition the IHSA to have the 16-game limit for public schools increased. With the support of the Principals, Ron Klein and Marty Wiora of Benet Academy got the schedule expanded to 25 dates, of which ten of those dates could be doubleheaders. As it stands today, all member teams of the IHSA can play 35 total games, with no doubleheader stipulations.
The first Hall of Fame banquet was hosted in 1978. The initial inductees were Al Budde of Belleville High School, Guy Cartwright of North Chicago High School, George Fencl of Morton High School, Martin McCarty of North Shore County Day High School, Jim Phipps of Niles High School, Ed Papciak of Lane Tech High School, Ed Stonebock of Peoria Manual High School, and Jack Kaiser.
Today our organization boasts over 600 members, we select an All-Area team and an All-State team, our clinic continues to grow in attendance and quality speakers, and we try to be an integral influence on the IHSA in all matters related to Illinois High School Baseball. 2016 was the first year that the IHSBCA ran a separate 1A – 2A Summer Tournament.
