Frequently Asked Questions

General

Q: How can I get involved with the Campbell Collaboration?

A: We are always looking for peer reviewers in our subject areas. We invite you to reach out to the Coordinating Group most aligned with your expertise for more information.

Q: Does Campbell offer sponsorships for events or initiatives?

A: Campbell does not have the capacity or funding to support external events or initiatives at this time.

For authors and prospective authors

Q: Does Campbell charge APCs to authors?

A: No. Campbell Systematic Reviews is an Open Access journal which is free to publish and free to read.

Q: How long does the editorial process take?

A: This is highly dependent on the availability of the editors and peer reviewers, as well as the number of revisions required. On average, it takes 8 months for a protocol and an additional 16 months for an EGM/review from submission to publication. We suggest recommending peer reviewers at the submission stage to shorten the length of the process.

Q: Can I run my searches while my paper is in peer review?

A: We do not recommend running your searches until peer review is complete and the information specialist has provided feedback. If the feedback is substantive, it may need to be reviewed by the information specialist again.

Q: Does Campbell publish scoping reviews/realist reviews/umbrella reviews/qualitative synthesis/methods papers?

A: Yes. Please reach out to the managing editor of the relevant Coordinating Group to discuss your submission if you would like more information.

Q: Does Campbell publish pre-prints?

This journal accepts articles previously published on preprint servers.

Campbell Systematic Reviews will consider review articles previously available as preprints. You may also post the submitted version of a manuscript to a preprint server at any time. You are requested to update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article. You may also post the final published version of the article immediately after publication.

Q: Can I publish my protocol with Campbell, and publish my review/EGM elsewhere?

A: We expect that protocols published in Campbell Systematic Reviews will result in a final review/EGM published with Campbell as well.

Q: Can I publish my protocol or review/EGM with Campbell if it has already been published elsewhere?

A: An editor would need to assess your manuscript to see if your protocol meets the Campbell standards, and you would need to be willing to make changes to your manuscript in accordance with our editorial standards.

Q: How does retrospective registration (Campbellization) work, and who is eligible?

A: Retrospective Registration (Campbellization) is a process to publish reviews/EGMs where the protocol is either already completed or in development. This process ultimately leads to the review being published with Campbell, while the protocol is published elsewhere.

Protocol in development, to be published elsewhere

If authors are in the process of developing the protocol which they aim to publish elsewhere (e.g. open access registration like OSF), authors may inquire about eligibility for the Campbellization process. To do this, authors submit the draft protocol (with the link to where the protocol is published) and a completed Campbell Standards to the relevant managing editor (via email). A Campbell editor will assess whether the topic is in scope for Campbell and the methods meet Campbell standards, based on the draft protocol. If the editor considers the protocol to meet Campbell standards, then the topic will be registered with Campbell as a title, and the protocol will be published elsewhere in an open-access repository. The editor will invite the author team to submit their full review through ScholarOne, and it will go through the usual editorial steps for a full review which is an internal check and editor feedback, followed by external referee and methods editor feedback. The review should not be a duplicate of a review published elsewhere. Eligibility for Campbellization does not guarantee publication with Campbell, as the review will still need to go through internal and external review processes.

Review completed, protocol published elsewhere

If authors have completed a review outside of Campbell, authors can submit the draft review (with the link to where the protocol is published) and a completed Campbell Standards to the relevant managing editor (via email). A Campbell editor will assess whether the topic is in scope for Campbell and the methods meet Campbell standards, based on the review and protocol.  If the editor considers the review to meet Campbell standards, then the review will go through the usual editorial steps for a full review which is an internal check and feedback, followed by external referee and methods editor feedback. The review should not be a duplicate of a review published elsewhere. Eligibility for Campbellization does not guarantee publication with Campbell, as the review will still need to go through internal and external review processes.
