After the pretest held on 2/19, One Dollar got better ideas to rearrange topics and class assignments.

--------------------

Before class reading:

Please Read chapter 1 and 2 of this book. I will have a brief introduction to these two chapters.

If you are not an English native speaker and want to save your time, you may use whole-article translation to your language (grab the concepts quickly is important, no matter the language). Then read those texts again in English.

Types of academic writing

*Academic posters or articles

Types of presentation

*Presentation in an academic meeting

*Business presentation

Writing practice and Presentation practice (group B)

Topic: introduce yourself

  1. Students can write the manuscript in the first class (or before class). Some people are familiar with the self-introduction, and this part is not necessary.
  2. In the second class, students can introduce themselves for 1 to 3 min.

Can be a real situation (of students).

Can be a simulation, for example, like a market manager in a company.

Tips:

If you do not have time, you may search for templates (and modify them to your situations)

If you still have no time, you may use AI with some key factors to generating a manuscript.

For instance (to get helps from AI)

Dear AI, please prepare a self introduction within 300 words for the following conditions. Thanks.

Name: One Dollar/xyz.

Job: An R&D staff in a bottled water company

Scenario: he/she will present in a proposal meeting to the general manager (what a nervous time). He/she needs to introduce him/herself in the beginning.

Writing practice & Presentation practice

1. Students can try to search for academic databases of your field: (1) just use search engine(s)   (2) use AI to help. Then write down your opinions and notes.

2. (Presentation) introduce the databases in your field, and tell us what academic article you find.

SDGs----4, 8

Academic writing differs from daily conversation, and it has its special format and usage. In the US, students learn writing from elementary to high school.  It is not only about writing and presentation but more training to think, organize, and learn logic. Thus, students have writing and presentation skills to enter university. In contrast, even students in Taiwan learn writing from elementary school, however it has yet to be considered an important skill, and thus, students enter college with insufficient ability in academic writing. Meanwhile, most students misunderstand that they are able to have academic writing as long as they use their native language.

For this course, the framework is based on preparing a research poster. Some issues will be covered, including how to use academic databases, how to read academic papers and to concentrate points, to understand paper format/style, read rules from “call for abstract”, prepare content,  write and submit abstract, edit poster (with content and diagrams/tables), to present or introduce the research. After finishing this course, students will learn the basic concepts of research and academic writing and presentation skills.
