What is the International Baccalaureate Program?
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a rigorous pre-university course of studies, which meets the needs of highly motivated secondary school students. Designed as a comprehensive two-year curriculum that allows its graduates to fulfil requirements of various national education systems, the diploma model is based on the pattern of no single country but incorporates the best elements of many.
The IB diploma curriculum is about building well-roundedness with six academic areas studied concurrently exposing students to balance within the two great traditions of learning i.e. the humanities and the sciences, as well as asking students to develop themselves inside and outside of the classroom through the three core areas. Throughout grades 11 and 12, students normally take one subject from each of the six subject areas as well as the three core activities of Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).

Distribution requirements ensure that the science-oriented student is challenged to learn a foreign language and that the natural linguist becomes familiar with laboratory procedures. While overall balance is maintained, flexibility in choosing higher level concentrations allows the student to pursue areas of personal interest and to meet special requirements for university entrance.

Partial I.B. Students (Certificate)
In the Certificate Programme, students enroll in one or more IB courses based on their interests. They cover the Alberta curriculum and the IB curriculum which explores subjects with greater depth and breadth.
Sample Timetables for a Full IB Diploma Candidate:
- Most pre-IB and IB courses are 5 credit full year courses.
* If students choose, CALM and PE 10 can be taken in summer school prior to grade 10, or either course could also be taken as an option space in the grade 10 timetable.
* The above grade 11 and 12 Sample Timetables both show Chemistry and Biology as the chosen Sciences. Either Physics HL or SL may also be taken.
THE PATH INTO INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
Grade 10 students, interested in the IB Diploma Program, are encouraged to complete a full year of M.E. LaZerte pre-IB diploma courses (or an IB Middle Years Program) to be granted entrance into the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in Grade 11 and Grade 12. The M.E. LaZerte pre-IB diploma program covers regular Alberta curriculum and provides enrichment designed to develop the skill set required for the successful completion of the rigorous IB diploma program. This pre – IB year is not affiliated with International Baccalaureate, nor is it a construct of that organization.
Grade 11 students who choose the full IB program will be recognized with an IB Diploma when they complete their final IB exams in Grade 12. Alternatively, students may elect to take a partial IB program and be recognized with IB Certificates (Courses) in the specific subjects that they complete. Please note that Alberta Education courses are studied and credited in conjunction with the M.E. LaZerte pre-IB diploma program in Grade 10 and with the IB program curriculum in Grade 11 and 12.

COURSES IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS:
English 10-1 pre-IB

This course is for intellectually curious university bound students who demonstrate a love of literature and a desire to explore works in translation from around the world. It is designed to develop critical thinking and a more sophisticated appreciation of literature considering essential literary concepts, conventions and genres. Students are expected to explore ideas and develop strong writing, discussion, and individual as well as group presentation skills.
English 20-1 IB - Higher Level
5 Credits in English 20-1
Recommended: 65% in English 10 - 1 pre-IB
This course begins the two-year IB program which consists of works in translation (world literature), detailed study, groups of works and school-based choices. It is designed for students who enjoy literature, who desire challenge, and who commit to writing well. Students can expect their marks in this course to be comparable to their potential grade in regular English 20-1. The works of literature studied in IB at this level involve evaluation that will develop oral and written skills. It is a study of literature drawn from a variety of genres and periods. It provides extensive practice in the close reading and critical analysis of literature needed for IB assignments and examinations. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
English Literature 35 IB - Higher Level
3 Credits
This course accompanies and must be taken concurrently with English 20-1 IB. It includes a comparative study of selected World Literature in translation which students will use to write an internal assessment paper and to design an oral presentation to fulfill the requirements of the IB program. Completion of these assignments is a prerequisite for enrollment in English 30-1 IB. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.

English 30-1 IB - Higher Level

Recommended: 65% in English 20 - 1 IB
English 30IB completes the two–year IB program and can ONLY be taken by students who have completed English 20-1 IB and Works in Translation 35 IB. It continues the study of English Literature, World Literature in translation and may include an intensive study of poetry, a Shakespearean play and several novels. Students will fulfill IB criteria by completing a final IB oral examination in January and IB English exams in May. Students will also prepare for the Alberta Diploma Examination in June of the grade 12 year. Students will NOT be penalized for attempting a more rigorous curriculum and can expect their grades to be at least as high as their potential grade in regular English 30-1. This course is for intellectually curious university bound students who want to develop the skill to analyze, forecast, study, record, advise, and gain a better understanding of the world, its people, and the present that they live in. It explores multiple perspectives on the origins of globalization and its impacts on peoples. Attention is placed on both oral and written communication with a particular emphasis on historical inquiry. Students will attempt to understand and appreciate their own culture, personal history and values as well as develop the open-mindedness to analyze other perspectives, values, and the traditions of other individuals around the world.
Social Studies 20-1 IB
Higher Level History (History of the Americas)
5 Credits in Social Studies 20-1
Recommended: 65% in Social Studies 10 - 1 pre-IB
In this course students will study major trends in Europe in the period from the mid-18th century to the end of the 20th century. In particular, students will examine the origins of nationalism and the influence of nationalism on regional, international, and global relations. Areas of focus will include the French Revolution, the Napoleonic era, World War I, and World War II. Students will learn and practice the skill of writing both a position paper and a historical investigation. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
Recommended: 65% in Social Studies 20-1 IB
In this course students study 20th century European History from the Russian Revolution through World Wars I and II and the Cold War Period in preparation for the IB exam in May. The course emphasizes an in-depth study of history with an emphasis on analytical thinking and essay writing skills which prepare them for university level work. Students will also study economic and political systems of the 20th century which, along with a study of global interaction, will prepare them for the Alberta Diploma Examination in June. The Historical Investigation, a major research project, will be undertaken in the first semester of the senior year. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
3 Credits
This course accompanies and must be taken concurrently with History 30 IB. It endeavors to augment the student’s understanding of trends affecting the world in the past century. A particular emphasis is placed on the origin and development of the Cold War. Considerable attention is given to historical interpretation and the analysis of documents. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.

Common Mathematics 10 pre-IB

Recommended: 75% in Math 9
This course is for intellectually curious university bound students who have a love of learning and want to explore new ideas. The focus of this course is the development of skills related to algebra, measurement and relations and functions and their application to problem solving. Mathematics 10 pIB will also include study of measurement, trigonometry, polynomials, linear functions, function notation and systems of equations to provide the skills required to complete Math 20-1 pIB.
Mathematics 20-1 pre-IB
5 credits in Precalculus Math 20-1
Recommended: 65% in Mathematics 10 pre-IB
This course continues the study of functions with the introduction of quadratic and rational functions. Other topics include: trigonometry, radicals and rational expressions as well as sequences and series.
Mathematics 30-1 IB - Standard Level
5 credits in Precalculus Math 30-1
Recommended: 65% in Mathematics 20-1 IB
This course is for students who wish to enter post-secondary studies that require calculus like mathematics, engineering, business, pre-medical or pre-dentistry programs. The course continues the study of trigonometry, functions and relations as well as permutations, combinations, and binomial theorems. Students will complete a practice portfolio assignment. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
Pure Mathematics 31 IB - Standard Level
5 credits in Math 31
Recommended: 65% in Mathematics 30-1 IB
The Mathematics 31 IB course includes vectors and introduces the fundamental processes of calculus; the derivative, the integral, and their application to problem solving and graphing. Students will complete a portfolio assignment.
COURSES IN SCIENCE:
Science 10 pre-IB (5 credits)
Recommended: 75% in Science 9 and Math 9
This course is for intellectually curious university bound students who love to explore new ideas, design experiments and develop their scientific aptitude. Science 10 pIB is intended to provide an introduction to the study of biology, chemistry and physics while also looking at the issues that surround one of our globe’s most pressing problems that of climate change. Most concepts are studied in greater depth and breadth but students will earn marks parallel with regular curriculum classes. The course also focuses on the development of laboratory skills and scientific communication.
Biology 20 IB - Higher Level (5 Credits)
Recommended: 65% in Science 10 pre-IB
Biology 20 IB continues to build on biological concepts including: ecology, evolution, energy exchange in the biosphere, ecosystems, biochemistry, enzymes, cell respiration and photosynthesis. It also studies human systems including muscles, digestion, circulation, immunity, respiration and excretion. Laboratory skills continue to be practiced, leading students to the design of their own labs when presented with a biological problem. A lab portfolio will be generated. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
Biology 25 IB – Higher Level (3 credits)
This course accompanies and must be taken concurrently with Biology 20 IB. Curriculum involves IB extensions for the nature of scientific design, human systems, inorganic evolution, origin of life, cell biology, evolution, classification, phylogeny, plant science, plant evolution beyond the regular Alberta Curriculum. This course continues to build on laboratory skills in a biological setting. A lab portfolio will be generated. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed. All students will complete a Group IV project and a major IB internal assessment. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
*IB Students who take IB Biology are required to enroll in both Biology 20 IB and Biology 25 IB
Chemistry 20 IB - Standard Level (5 Credits)
Recommended: 65% in Science 10 pre-IB
Chemistry 20 IB students will study atomic bonding, stoichiometry, solutions and gas laws. Equilibrium and acid-base reactions are also introduced at this level. A variety of laboratory activities are done with the student keeping permanent records in a laboratory portfolio that will be generated until the end of Grade 12. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
Chemistry 25 IB – Standard Level (3 credits)
This course accompanies and must be taken concurrently with Chemistry 20 IB. Course curriculum includes the IB extensions to bonding, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. This course continues to build on skills in a chemical laboratory setting. A lab portfolio will be generated. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed. All students will complete a Group IV project and a major IB internal assessment. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.

Physics 20 IB - Standard Level OR Higher Level
(5 Credits)
Recommended: 65% in Science 10 pre-IB
Physics 20 IB continues to build on the understanding of energy and motion initiated in Science 10 pIB students will develop experimental and analytical skills while exploring the social and historical aspects of the amazing and exhilarating world of Physics. Topics include: Kinematics, Dynamics, Forces and Equilibrium, Simple Harmonic Motion, Uniform Circular Motion, Gravity and Waves. Laboratory investigations are an important part of this course and a lab portfolio will be generated. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
GRADE 12
Biology 30 IB - Higher Level
5 Credits in Biology 30
Recommended: 65% in Biology 20 IB
This final course in Biology will cover human nervous, endocrine, reproductive systems and fetal development. Cell division, molecular genetics, classical genetics, population genetics and population ecology topics will also be covered. Students will review previously studied IB related material prior to May examinations. A lab portfolio will be generated. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
Chemistry 30 IB - Standard Level
5 Credits in Chemistry 30
Recommended: 65% in Chemistry 20 IB
This final course in Chemistry examines Organic Chemistry, Thermochemistry, Oxidation and Reduction, Equilibrium, and Acid and Base Chemistry as well as exploring more complex chemical reactions. Chemistry knowledge will be used to create a variety of technologies such as synthetic organic molecules and batteries. Students will be required to create their own laboratory designs at this level, which are part of the IB internal assessment laboratory portfolio. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
Physics 30 IB - Standard Level OR Higher Level
5 Credits in Physics 30
Recommended: 65% in Physics 20IB
In Physics 30 IB, students will become aware of the free and rapid interplay that exists between the theoretical ideas, mathematical calculations and experimental results. Explore the worlds of Momentum, Electricity, Magnetism, Light, and Atomic Physics as you learn how theoretical ideas create the technologies you use every day. This course provides a firm foundation for those wishing to pursue further studies in areas such as, architecture, engineering, dentistry, or any other endeavor that relies on modern technology. Laboratory
investigations are an important part of this course and IB lab portfolios will be expanded. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
Physics 25 IB – Standard Level (or Higher Level)
3 credits
This course accompanies and must be taken concurrently with Physics 30 IB. Course curriculum includes IB extensions beyond the regular Alberta curriculum including thermal physics, gas laws, forces, fields, electric cells, internal resistance, electromotive force, circuit diagrams and laws, heating effect of current, Ohm’s law, resistivity, power dissipation, EMR, C-imaging, reflecting and refracting telescopes, fibre optics, Malus’ law, atomic physics, Feynman diagrams, and will focus on energy production addressing energy sources, and thermal energy transfer. A lab portfolio will be generated. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed. All students will complete a Group IV project and a major IB internal assessment. COURSES IN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES:
French 10-9Y pre-IB - 5 Credits in French 10 – 9Y
Recommended: 75% in French 9
This course is recommended for students with sufficient background (at least 6 years in previous FSL courses between Elementary and Junior High School). Students not meeting these requirements should not register in French 10-9Y. French 10-9Y pIB focuses on the development and use of basic grammar for everyday speech and sentence structures as used in description or in the sharing of information. In this course you will continue to develop your language, vocabulary skills and cultural knowledge as you study the themes of activities, shopping, vacations and fine arts.
Spanish 10-6Y pre-IB - 5 Credits in Spanish 10 - 6Y
Recommended: 75% in Spanish 9
This course is recommended for persons with sufficient background (at least 3 years in junior high Spanish courses). Students who do not meet these requirements must register in a beginner level. In this enriched course you will begin to use Spanish language skills confidently and hold meaningful conversations. Your cultural exploration will include authentic literary works, real-life scenarios, arts and entertainment.
Spanish 10-3Y pre-IB - 5 Credits in Spanish 10 – 3Y
Recommended: for beginners
In this Spanish course you will learn basic expressions and vocabulary related to introductions, descriptions of family and friends, preferences, sport and leisure activities, clothing, food, school, and celebrations. You will develop listening and speaking skills, gain an understanding of Spanish pronunciation and spelling, as well as basic sentence structure in order to read and write the Spanish language.
Arabic 15-3Y pre-IB - 5 Credits in Arabic 15 – 3Y
Recommended: previous speaking and writing experience at home and/or in a formal educational setting
This is an Arabic course where you will learn basic expressions and vocabulary related to introductions, descriptions of family and friends, preferences, sport and leisure activities, clothing, food, school, and select holidays and celebrations. This is a course that prepares students to write an IB Exam at the end of grade 11. Students are expected to have previous experience with the language at home or in a formal educational setting prior to enrolling in this course.
Chinese Language Arts 10 pre-IB

(Chinese Bilingual Program)
Recommended: at least 75% in grade 9
This course is designed for those students who have completed Chinese Language and Culture 30 and who wish to attain their IB certificate or diploma. This course will be fast-tracked and intensive. The focus will start to shift onto textual studies, language analysis and literature appreciation while students continue to enhance their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills with the help of practices in researching, problem solving, critical thinking, public speaking and using technologies. It is a progressive course that provides continuity of learning and lots of specific help to get students ready for their final goal with 15 credits earned over three years.
Chinese Language and Culture 10 - 6Y pre-IB

Recommended: 75% in grade 9 Chinese
This course is recommended for persons with sufficient background (at least 3 years in junior high Spanish courses). Students who do not meet these requirements must register in a beginner level. In this course you will become more comfortable and confident in using the language. You will have the chance to speak, write, read, create multimedia presentations and perform in Chinese. The different activities associated with Chinese culture will also keep your learning fun. In the future, your Chinese language skills will help you become highly competitive in our global job market.
Chinese Language and Culture 10 - 3Y pre-IB

Recommended: for beginners
Learning a second language has become an important and interesting part of being a global citizen. This introductory level course will offer you a good look at China’s unique ancient history and its eye-opening development of modern days. You will meet new friends, experience a new culture and, at the same time, acquire sufficient vocabulary and skills for short conversations with people who speak Chinese. In the IB preparation section of this course you will fast-track to a higher level of proficiency in all language skills.
French 20 - 9Y IB – French B - SL
5 Credits in French 20 – 9Y
Recommended: 65% in French 10-9Y pre-IB
Emphasis is placed on all four language skills—listening and reading comprehension and oral and written production. In this course you will study the themes of senses and feelings, close friends, fads and fashions, consumerism and outdoor life. You will also deepen your understanding of Francophone cultures. Spanish 20 - 3Y IB – Ab initio - SL

Recommended: 65% in Spanish 10 - 3Y pre-IB
The general goal of Spanish 20-3Y IB is to further students’ knowledge of Spanish, focusing on oral, written, comprehension and aural skills. Students will use Spanish effectively in a variety of situations and for a variety of purposes. Students will be effective global citizens through exploration of cultures of the Spanish-speaking world; students will also learn to use various strategies to maximize their learning and communication in Spanish. This course will prepare students for the written and oral examinations that will be required for successful completion of Spanish 30-3Y IB. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.

Recommended: 65% in Chinese Language Arts 10 pre-IB
This is a full year five-credit course designed for students who have successfully completed Chinese Language Arts 10 pIB. It aims to build on students’ success and help them to further enhance their listening, speaking, writing and viewing skills as well as their ability to understand and appreciate the Chinese language and use it confidently and competently. This course focuses on studies and analysis of texts that cover topics such as career options, consumerism, media, public institutions, and travel. Materials that reflect on Chinese literature and language are also looked at in depth, such as ancient Chinese poems and proverbs, classic and modern essays and articles, as well as more complicated sentence structures and vocabulary exercises. Lots of independent and group work is involved for students to develop skills in areas like critical thinking, information researching, problem solving, public speaking and using technologies. Recommended: 65% in Chinese 10 - 6Y pre-IB
This is a full year, five credit course designed for students who have successfully completed Chinese Language and Culture 10-6YIB. Students will acquire more vocabulary and grammatical knowledge to improve their speaking, reading, writing and listening comprehension skills. Students will be able to use words and expressions in a range of contexts such as health, safety, celebrations, relationships and communications. Students will also participate in Chinese cultural experiences which will help them to identify aspects of Chinese traditions and life styles. Practice oral and written internal assessments will be generated for IB. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
Chinese Language and Culture 20 - 3Y IB

This is a full year five credit course. It is a continuation of Chinese Language and Culture 10 and is designed for students who wish to build on what they have learned in the beginning level. The class is mainly focused on Chinese as spoken in day-to-day life in a variety of topics such as weather, clothing, hobbies, school life and school facilities. Speaking, reading, writing and listening skills are all integrated and emphasized. Students’ vocabulary will expand up to five hundred words with more sentence patterns and structures. Practice oral and written internal assessments will be generated for IB. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
Arabic 25-3Y IB
5 Credits in Arabic 25 – 3Y
Recommended: 65% in Arabic 15-3Y pre-IB
This is an intermediate Arabic course where you will expand your knowledge beyond basic expressions and vocabulary related to introductions, descriptions of family and friends, preferences, sport and leisure activities, clothing, food, school, and select holidays and celebrations. This is a course that has an IB Exam at the end of the course. This fulfills the second language requirement for IB Diploma students. Students need to have substantial previous experience with the language at home or in a formal educational setting prior to enrolling in this course.
**NOTE - There may be an IB Exam written in May at the end of Arabic 25-3Y IB.
All 30 IB language students must complete an Oral Internal Assessment (IA) and an Oral Examination plus a written assignment to fulfill the IB assessment criteria.
French 30-9Y IB – French B - SL

Recommended: 65% in French 20-9Y IB
In this senior level course, students will further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with a focus on communication. Students will review and expand vocabulary and grammatical knowledge and use it to produce oral and written projects, as well as develop an understanding of Francophone cultures. Familiar topics such as sports and health, housing, fads and fashion, the media, the world of work, travel and tourism will be addressed in preparation for the IB language exams. Students will complete oral and written internal assessments as well as write the May IB exams. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
Spanish 30 - 3Y IB – Ab Initio - SL

Recommended: 65% in Spanish 20 - 3Y IB
The goal of this enriched course is the development of communicative competence in Spanish. Writing skills with emphasis on conversational and functional skills will be a vital part of the course. Students will need to demonstrate independence and competency in applying previous grammatical structures. The course expands upon topics learned in 20-3Y IB and involves grammar study and skill development to reach or surpass the oral, reading and written requirements for IB. Students will complete oral and written internal assessments as well as write the May IB exams. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.

This is the final year of the Chinese (Bilingual Program) Language Arts course, one of the goals is to prepare students for their IB Exams in May. It also continues to build on students’ success and help them perfect their listening, speaking, writing, viewing skills and ability to understand and appreciate the Chinese language as well as use it confidently and competently. This course focuses on topics such as: personal finances, technology, peace and human rights, environment protection, health and fitness, crimes and justice, and any other topics that meet the needs and interests of
students. Materials that reflect on Chinese literature and language are also looked at in depth, such as ancient Chinese poems and proverbs, classic and modern essays and articles, as well as more complicated sentence structures and vocabulary exercises. Lots of independent and group work is involved for students to develop skills in areas like critical thinking, information researching, problem solving, public speaking and using technologies. Students will complete oral and written internal assessments as well as write the May IB exams. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.

This is a full year, five credit course designed for students who have successfully completed Chinese Language and Culture 20-6Y. Students will acquire more vocabulary and grammatical knowledge to improve their speaking, reading, writing and listening comprehension skills. Students will be able to use words and expressions in a range of contexts such as future plans, media, popular culture, science and technology. Students will also participate in Chinese cultural experiences which will help them to identify aspects of Chinese history, literature and education systems. Students will complete oral and written internal assessments as well as write the May IB exams. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
Chinese Language and Culture 30 - 3Y IB
Mandarin Ab initio SL
5 Credits in Chinese Language and Culture 30 - 3Y
Recommended: 65% in Chinese Language and Culture 20-3Y pIB
This course is designed for those students who have completed Chinese Language and Culture 20 (Introductory IB) and wish to attain their IB certificate or diploma. Because students in this course will take the IB Ab Initio exam at the end of their third year, this course will be fast-tracked and intensive. The focus will start to shift onto reading comprehension and writing skills during the second year while students continue to build on what they have learned in the beginning level and improve on their speaking and listening. It is a progressive course that provides continuity of learning and lots of specific help to get students ready for their final goal with 15 credits earned over three years. Students will complete oral and written internal assessments as well as write the May IB exams. TOK curriculum links will also be addressed.
** NOTE: There is no Arabic 30-3Y IB Course. Students may qualify to challenge the Arabic 30-3Y L&C Alberta Exam if they speak to an administrator.

Physical Education 10 + Career & Life Management (CALM 20) – Boys and Girls
5 + 3 credits = 8 credits

Note: Both PE 10 & CALM are required courses for an Alberta High School Diploma. These can be taken during summer school before grade 10 to create more space for options. Completing these courses during summer school does not guarantee that extra options will be able to be timetabled in grade 10.
As part of our involvement with Alberta Education’s High School Flexibility Enhancement Project, M.E. LaZerte may provide students with the opportunity to earn the 5 credits in Physical Education 10 and 3 credits in CALM 20 required for their high school diploma.
OTHER FULL IB DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS:
Grade 11 and 12:
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
Full IB Diploma candidates will be required to complete 150 hours of extra-curricular activities. Students will also have to choose activities that help them meet eight learner outcomes and create a reflective journal, have CAS interviews or scrapbook, to document their achievement of the eight outcomes. Although the emphasis will be on quality rather than quantity, approximately one-third of these hours will be done pursuing Creative endeavors, one-third in Action (physical activity) pursuits, and the final one-third in Service activities. The intent of this requirement is to help the students challenge themselves in new ways beyond the classroom.
Students who complete CAS will be enrolled in Leadership 15 and 25; or Leadership 25 and 35 (if 10 level was taken in grade 10)
Grade 11:
Theory of Knowledge 25 IB (3 Credits)
Mandatory for IB Diploma students but the course may be taken by partial IB students with a teacher recommendation.
TOK is a course which examines the origins and validity of various forms of knowledge and the various ways of knowing. Theory of Knowledge is for anyone with a keen, inquiring mind.
Grade 12:
Theory of Knowledge 35 IB (3 Credits)
Prerequisite: must have completed TOK 25IB
In Grade 12, TOK 35 IB is a mandatory course for full IB Diploma candidates, but may be chosen as an elective by IB Certificate candidates. TOK is meant to allow students to practice the skills and attitudes they have been developing throughout the program, to become more independent, reflective, open-minded, knowledgeable and principled thinkers who make connections and deepen understanding of the ways humans gain knowledge, while critically assessing the subject specific knowledge they have obtained, and developing self-awareness as knowers. TOK consists of three major units: The Nature of Knowledge, The Ways of Knowing, and The Areas of Knowledge. Theory of Knowledge encourages lateral thinking and is the "art of wondering" about the human place in an interdependent universe. Students are challenged to develop their critical thinking skills and express them in both verbal and written form. Students will complete an oral presentation and an essay on a prescribed title.
Extended Essay (EE) (3 Credits)
Full IB Diploma candidates will be required to complete an independent analysis driven research paper of up to 4000 words on a focused topic of their choice. Students must be enrolled in the IB subject area in which they choose to write the Extended Essay.
What does the International Baccalaureate Program offer?
It is a direct path to university and is the best possible preparation that one can receive to develop the skills necessary to achieve success there. International Baccalaureate (IB) is an enriched academic program that gives students more opportunities to develop critical thinking skills than any other honors program. M.E. LaZerte IB students say that they value the dynamic classroom environment, individual instruction, challenging curriculum, dedicated teachers and the opportunity to develop self-confidence.
What makes the M.E. LaZerte International Baccalaureate Program special?
M.E. LaZerte has been graduating IB students since 2000. Each year, approximately 450 - 550 students are enrolled in our Pre–IB diploma and IB diploma program. This substantial population provides the opportunity for a wider selection of IB courses and more flexible timetabling for our students.
At M.E. LaZerte we believe that most IB students are capable of pursuing a full IB Diploma program, and encourage them to do so in Grade 11. We help prepare all future IB students by encouraging all Grade 10 students to follow the M.E. LaZerte pre - IB diploma program which actively enhances the skill set required to be successful when students join IB in Grade 11. Although IB Diploma students are most highly pursued by universities, IB Certificate students can still gain advanced placement and transfer credit at most universities in individual disciplines. Our students can make an informed choice about what is the correct path for them to follow and can choose a full IB Diploma or partial IB Certificate programme.

We actively monitor student progress to ensure that students experience success and get help when they need it.
We annually organize IB field trips (note - consideration of COVID complexity) that help students gain a greater appreciation for the languages, culture, arts, architecture, history and perspectives of the international communities that we visit.
Evaluation:
Students are awarded Alberta Education marks for their achievement in IB courses during the program.
In Grade 12, students write their IB examinations in May and their Alberta Diploma examinations in June. Most universities will accept the higher of these two grades to meet admission requirements. Many universities will offer at least conditional admission on the basis of teacher generated IB predicted grades.
IB grades are based on teacher and student-generated internal assessment as well as externally assessed IB examinations. This gives a better reflection of a student’s abilities than an examination only approach to assessment.
Students in IB Math write the Mathematics 30 - 1 (IB Math SL) or 30 - 2, if offered, (IB Math Studies SL) Alberta Diploma exam in Grade 11.
Each IB course is marked on a 7-point scale (all full diploma students take 6 of these classes to earn up to 42 points). There are also 3 bonus points available for the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge course which produce a mark out of 45 points. To earn an IB Diploma, students must score at least 24 points out of a possible 45.
University Recognition
Most universities in Canada and the United States actively recruit IB graduates. Harvard, MIT, Yale, Stanford and U of T, to name a few, recognize the IB credentials for advanced placement or transfer credit. Each of the 3,500 universities and colleges in North America has its own admission policy, so recognition of IB courses should not be taken for granted. “The IB standards are highly aligned with the KSUS standards indicating that students who learn the IB curriculum in high school enter college with the type of knowledge and skills not only expected by college faculty but also with skills known to promote academic success in entry-level courses. Of the 73 KSUS standards in English only seven KSUS standards were not aligned with the IB standards across Language A1, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. Similarly in mathematical studies, for the 83 KSUS standards only 11 were not aligned to the IB standards. Of special note is the complete alignment found between the mathematical studies standards and the algebra, trigonometry and statistics standards of the college ready KSUS. A large section of the KSUS standards are devoted to the study and acquisition of algebra skills. This emphasis is intentional because college faculty members know that strong algebra skills are closely linked with success in college math and science courses. Students who take the IB mathematical studies course have the opportunity to learn every algebra standard expected by the college faculty who will teach them (as represented by the KSUS). In science there is complete alignment between the KSUS standards and the 47 IB chemistry standards, the 19 biology standards and the concepts of environmental science that are embedded across all three IB science courses. For IB physics (31 standards) only five KSUS standards could not be detected. In general those KSUS standards for which the faculty alignment experts could detect no alignment were simply of a grain-size more detailed than the IB standards.” (Conley, 2009)

“The results of this study clearly confirm the strong relationship between the IB Diploma Programme and standards for college readiness and success. The IB standards demonstrate a very high degree of alignment with the KSUS standards in all subject areas. In addition, many of the individual IB standards are at a level more advanced than entry-level college courses. Furthermore, the IB standards address key cognitive strategies that are critical to success in entry-level college courses. These key cognitive skill areas are rarely addressed in state content standards but are identified almost universally by college instructors as being central to success in entry-level college courses. In short, students who participate successfully in IB should be well prepared to succeed in entry-level college general education courses and in some cases to have already learned material covered in such courses.” (Conley, 2009)
