Director

Characteristics: 

Authoritative, creative and decisive.

Skills needed to work as a director:

You will need to be able to:

  1. Have a clear visual of the intended idea.
  2. Develop some sort of style for the show.
  3. Pay attention towards the details & see the bigger picture.
  4. Learning to cope with environments with high amounts of stress.
  5. Acknowledging production processes, with initiative and problem solving skills.
  6. Excellent forms of communication, both verbal and written.
  7. Highly motivational towards actors and crew members.
  8. Knowledge towards health and safety procedures and legislations.

Job role and responsibilities: As a director, you should have an understanding of different scenes and how they all fit together. This is mainly as you should be able to visualise the entire movie, scene by scene, shot by shot. This is beneficial because directors could make some changes to create more stronger dramatic effects and greater audience tension.Another reason why this is so beneficial is the director has to be able to tell each actor/actress/crew member what to do so this practically means they are incharage of both the technical and creative aspects, managing the budget, keeping the production under control and overall making sure that the environment is safe for everyone. This means directors need to be able to absorb high amounts of information, keep track of schedules while also making sure everything is maintained with high quality.

Producer

Characteristics:

Mindful, patient and thoughtful.

Skills needed to work as a producer:

You will need to be able to:

  1. Clear understanding of storytelling elements.
  2. Excellent understanding of the creative processes, this includes filmmaking, screenwriting, editing, music and directing.
  3. Able to handle the planning of a production.
  4. High communication and interpersonal skills, especially while being under decisive and sensitive types of pressures for example during a budget plan.
  5. Following codes and regulations while monitoring  & supervising post-production.
  6. Preparing procedures related to health and safety in the workplace.
  7. Selecting the right crew and supplies while identifying artists and contributors.
  8. Controlling expenditures.

Job role and responsibilities:

As a producer, you should either be employed by a production company or work independently coordinating various aspects of film production. These type of aspects would be selecting the script; coordinating writing, directing, and editing; and arranging financing. They always have the final say on all the important arrangements such as the marketing and distribution areas of the show. This also includes the responsibility for creating and bringing together the production team. The overall main responsibility would be for them to ensure the team can work to their full protocols so that they can aim to improve the film.

Cinematographers

Characteristics:

Artistic, understanding and creative.

Skills needed to work as a cinematographer:

You will need to be able to:

  1. Have a clear artistic vision.
  2. Pay close attention towards all small creative details including lighting.
  3. Open mindset towards giving and receiving directions.
  4. Excellent forms of communication between all staff and crew members.
  5. High physical and strength coordination & knowledge of health and safety legislation procedures.
  6. Knowledge of technical photochemical,camera equipment & digital processes.
  7. Diplomacy and tact when working with crew and cast members.
  8. Photographic, paining and moving image knowledge.

Job role and responsibilities:

As a cinematographer, you should be able to manipulate lightwork, understand dynamic photographic methods and understand camerawork. What you should be also able to do is work with production designers, art directors, set dressers,wardrobe and hair stylists crew members in order to successfully establish the look of the film scenes so the film looks professional. Cinematographers should support the director's vision within the caption of a camera, they should be most prominent within elements of pre-production, storyboarding process and the production.

Scriptwriter

Characteristics:

Passionate, discipline and anti-pressure.

Skills needed to work as a scriptwriter:

  1. Understand audience members tastes, film narrative methods and current trends.
  2. Ability to understand screenplay development, format and layout with readers report.
  3. Organisation development skills & all rounded communication skills.
  4. Search for new talents, creative relationships and a passion for cinema and filmmaking.
  5. Art and cultural developments, with regard to new works in film, fiction & poetry.
  6. Troubleshoot creativity problems, great time management and flexibility.
  7. Production company requirement knowledge & film market trends.
  8. Insight into screenplay tone, genre, style structure, characters, plot, action and dialogue while understanding dramatic tension, various stage developments and how screenwork affects the audience.

Job role and responsibilities:

As a scriptwriter, you should be able to efficiently work next to the director in order to accurately present your story ideas through their mind. Before this, you must succeed in producing writing talent through either a narrative story or a well-thought-out scripts which will then be sent to the production company. All production companies run off the back of the script, a film cannot be created without a specific story which they would need to follow. There are a range of jobs available while writing for either television or film which is because they are expected to write for a wide range within the industry which could either be a novel or a book, a remake, reboot or new type of film but they also need to make sure to incorporate elements for the pre-production period, so they do not forget their part of the job.

Production Designer

Characteristics:

Observant, solutionist and problem-solver.

Skills needed to work as a production designer:

  1. High quality planning skills.
  2. Excellent organisational and administrative skills.
  3. All rounded insurance issues awareness.
  4. Communication and negotiation skills.
  5. Health and safety legislation and procedural awareness.
  6. Well rounded contact with suppliers for equipment and personnel recruitment.
  7. Familiar with accounting and budgeting programs.
  8. Knowledge with the films schedule and word processing software.

Job role and responsibilities:

As a production designer, you should be able to provide drawings of the visual style you imagine and find valid locations in order for the production to look aesthetically pleasing. This also requires you to understand concepts of art and design to a high level so that the production is effective to the aimed target audience. You will also work closely with photographic directors and storyboard designers so you share your creative thoughts on how the film should look. This means that your job will heavily rely on bonds and collaborations as well as being able to be patient whilst working with one another in order to aim for success.

Costume Designer

Characteristics:

Imaginative, creative and budget-awareness.

Skills needed to work as a costume designer:

  1. Strong passion towards costumes and clothing.
  2. Administrative and multi-tasking skills.
  3. Attention towards detail especially while using a sewing machine.
  4. Highly skilled in photography, airbrushing and digital photography.
  5. Set etiquette, tact and sensitivity.
  6. Dressing actors throughout different historical styles.
  7. Ability to measure cloth sizes at glace.
  8. Ability to design an outfit for different bodies and faces.

Job role and responsibilities:

As a costume designer, there are no specific qualifications needed however, most designers usually have either a qualification or degree within either fashion, costume design or performing arts and design. The key for gaining a job would be through all the practical experience and apprenticeship-style programmes in order to showcase your work and gain a job. If you would rather be a costume assistants, you would generally have experience previously working at large costumiers companies.

Financial Manager

Characteristics:

Skills needed to work as a financial manager:

  1. Analysing, providing and interpreting financial information and changes.
  2. Analysing competitors, marketing trends and supervising staff.
  3. Managing and arranging budget sources for the companies debt facilities.
  4. Conducting cost-reduction reviews along with research influencing performance.
  5. Creating financial reports for deadlines, strategies and long-term plans.
  6. External relationships with organizations and awareness of any financial changes.
  7. Monitoring cash flow, future trends and monitoring report systems.
  8. Minimising financial risks by developing financial management.

Job role and responsibilities:

As a financial manager, you should be able to  provide financial guidance along with support towards the company. You are also required to deal with complex types of analysis about the financial system. Pre-budgeting strategies are admired and quite frankly, essential in order for the company to arrange their plans both short term and long term. Lastly, you should also be able to make sure that all types of financial based practises follow accordingly with the statutory legislation and regulations previously put in place so the company does not do any illegal transactions.

Location Manager

Characteristics:

Organized, practical & responsible.

Skills needed to work as a location manager:

  1. Creatively analysing the scripts to understand required locational scouting.
  2. Meeting director and designer to collect ideas and research for their vision.
  3. Scheduled arrival for crew members while providing relevant support info.
  4. Collecting healthy safety and security information while testing risks.
  5. High understanding of travel arrangements such as nearby accommodations.
  6. Ensure no disruptive noises or events will happen nearby during the shoot.
  7. Making sure there's supervision for equipment and power sources on site.
  8. Dealing with the public and ensuring the final wrap runs smoothly.

Job role and responsibilities:

As a location manager you will need to make sure to arrange the practical aspects of the location for the film or television show which are held outside the studio. This means a lot of identifying through working with the director and designer, reading the script and analysing it in order to organise the appropriate sites would be necessary at all times. You would also need to have a general financial awareness as there are strict budgets and time limits you would have to follow.
