Interactive computer program that develops reading skills through personalized learning activities.
Aligned to rigorous English Language Arts standards, including the New Jersey Learning Standards.
On initial log-in, students complete placement activities in Core5 to determine their appropriate, individualized starting level.
After two months on Lexia each student has a Performance Predictor which indicates the student’s percent chance of reaching the end-of-year benchmark for his or her grade level.
Lexia provides an individualized “Prescription of Intensity” (or a weekly targeted usage for each child to reach the end-of-year benchmark for his or her grade level) which updates weekly. Students work independently and at their own pace on activities in Core5 several days a week (at home and/or in school).
Focuses on six areas of reading instruction: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Students receive scaffolding, corrective feedback, and direct instruction in Core5 when needed.
Key Features of Program:
Initial Diagnostic Placement Test
Lexia Lessons are scripted lessons for teachers that target specific skills associated with Core5 online activities. There are over 160 Lexia Lessons available for grade levels Pre-K through 5. They are designed for individual, small group, or whole-class targeted instruction and are automatically recommended for struggling students based on performance in online activities. Many include materials such as activity pages, graphic organizers, and word lists to support instruction.
Lexia Skill Builders are paper-based practice materials that reinforce and extend online learning. They are recommended for students after the completion of an online activity and provide opportunities to extend learning to speaking and writing tasks, and allow for generalization and expansion of skills. There are Skill Builders available for each of the 89 online activities, plus answer keys. Skill Builders are designed to be used independently, with a teacher, or with a peer partner. They can be used in a variety of ways—in classroom centers, for homework, or in after-school programs.
Lexia Connections are strategies and routines to structure individual, small group, or whole-class activities that target essential components of reading skill instruction. Activity ideas allow for integration of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and provide guidance on linking reading activities to content-area instruction. Reference tables, word lists, and graphic organizers are provided as part of this resource, in addition to the activity ideas.
Progress Monitoring: comprehensive reports are available on student usage, growth in units, skills, and levels. Areas of focus, recommended supplemental lessons and ongoing performance predictors are available.
School to Home Connections:
Parent Information Letters (available in seven languages) explain how students can log in directly to Core5 at home. A teacher email address and student login information can be included with the letter in the space provided.
At Home Activity Sheet provides families with activities they can do at home to support building reading skills.
Summer Home Use Letter gives families information about how their students should use Lexia over the summer.
