What was the Titanic?

The Titanic was a ship that cost around £1.5 million to build. She was built in Belfast, Northern Ireland for the shipping line called White Star. It took three years to build her (between the year 1909 and 1912). She weighed more than 46, 000 tonnes which made her the largest passenger steamer at the time. The Titanic was around 269 metres long and 28.2 metres wide.

The Titanic was built alongside another ship - her sister ship called the Olympic. Both ships were designed by a man called Thomas Andrews.

The owners believed and boasted that the Titanic was “unsinkable” because of her sixteen watertight compartments that could be closed off in an emergency. They were also proud of the beautiful First Class accommodation. It included large state-rooms, a café, a swimming pool, a restaurant and four elevators. As like many other ships at the time, the Titanic had different compartments for people from different social class.

After the Titanic was built, she went on her first voyage, also known as a maiden voyage. Sadly, this was also her final voyage. The voyage began in Southampton, England, on Wednesday, April 10th, 1912. She stopped in France and Southern Ireland before she began to head across the Atlantic Ocean towards her destination of New York in America.

Parts of a ship

A ship is made up of a number of parts which have special names. The hull is the main body of the ship. If you stand on a ship facing the front, the right hand side of the ship is called starboard while the left hand side of the ship is called port. The front of the ship is called the bow while the back of the boat is called the stern.

 TiTanic is like a big boat that can take some passengers inside the large titanic.
