2. Technology-Digital Citizenship/SCC responsibilities:
Digital Citizenship Administration Responsibilities – Report to School Community Councils The LEA report may include:
• What filters are being used and how do they work? The student iPads are filtered by iBoss Cloud in school or at home. The staff devices and student computer / chrome labs use Fortinet Filtering. BYOD devices on our network are filtering using FortiNet. Both utilize a categorical based filtering system with additional whitelisting and blacklisting. This allows us to blacklist an entire category based on iBoss or FortiNets classification of content, while maintaining the ability to override where required.
• Are there different settings used for different grades and school levels? There are different filter rules for elementary schools, junior high, high school and staff.
• What is the district filtering policy on frequently used sites such as YouTube, Google Images, Weebly, etc.? The district forces YouTube and Google / Google Images to use Safe Search Restriction. Teachers have the ability to approve a YouTube video that has yet to go through the Google process for Safe Search identification.
• Are there management systems available (MDM, Chrome management, LanSchool, etc.) that can add additional supervision and appropriately limit access? We use JAMF MDM for iPads and Chrome Management for Chromebooks. Faculty have the ability to use Apple Classroom on the iPads in their classrooms.
• What resources does the district provide concerning educating students on safe internet use and digital citizenship? Each school should be providing training on safe internet use and digital citizenship. CUES has also been involved in the digital citizenship training and curriculum.
• What is the protocol for students, employees and parents in district schools when inappropriate content is accessed? District or school administration will be involved. Students could lose internet privileges, lose device privileges, or suspension.
• District capabilities to change filtering, settings and management tools based on best practices, technological limitations, and funding. Where applicable, districts could include what is provided in connection with e-rate funding. Our district uses the latest filtering tools.
• What devices are being used and how are students using them? Students are using iPads, Chromebooks, PCs and MacOS computers. Each student in the district has an iPad assigned to them. In Elementary Schools their iPad is limited to classroom use only with limited exceptions. Chromebooks, PCs and MacOS Devices are all used in a lab environment. Chromebooks may be deployed within mobile labs.
• What are the main applications, programs, and sites used in different classes, grade levels, and subject areas? • What supervision practices are in place when students are online? Each school and grade level are using different apps. Schools use teachers and computer lab assistants in the supervision of students when they are online.
• Are there management tools used that allow teachers to digitally monitor student use or limit access to some applications or sites? Some teachers use Apple Classroom. Other teachers do not utilize tools beyond the filtering put in place. In most cases they use standard classroom management practices.
• What are the school rules when inappropriate information appears for students, staff and parents? The rule is to get out of the inappropriate site and report it.
• Are there safe reporting procedures for students, staff, and parents? How does the school balance access and safety that is grade level appropriate? The tech staff looks at filtering logs for safety. The school district makes decisions on allowing grade level appropriate sites. District staff allows or blocks sites as needed.
• What does the administration see as important opportunities for students related to constructive, proactive technology use? Students learning digital citizenship and best internet practices. Also, learning that you can never delete something that is posting on social media.
• What does the administration see as the greatest internet threats for students? Inappropriate sites, cyber bullying, and loss of data.
• What are the policies in place for tablets, cell phones, etc. brought from home? Students can bring devices from home with permission to get on the district's wifi. Student cell phones should be put away during classes.
• Explain training currently provided: To students about digital citizenship and safe use of technology ○ To parents and guardians about how to discuss and support digital citizenship and safe technology use with their children and how to report inappropriate content. Each school is providing training on digital citizenship and safe technology.
