Enduring Understandings: Heart, a vital part of the Circulatory and Cardiovascular systems

Essential Question: How is the Heart, a part of the Circulatory and Cardiovascular system, similar in function for animals as living creatures?

Key Concept: What is the heart and what does it do that is so important.  What is the structure of the heart?  Does it vary and if so why.

Essential Vocabulary: Apex / Aorta / Artery / Atrium / Coronary Artery / Interventricular Septum / Ventricle / Vein / Circulatory System / Cardiovascular System / Capillary

Brain Activator: Brainpop heart, brainpop cardiovascular system, united streaming video

Instructional Activities:

  1. will be Heart Introduction, using Brainpop and Discovery education
  2. we will begin vocabulary and drawings of the pigs’ heart
  3. All students will once complete regarding the heart will repair low grades and if we have time Wednesday and Thursday we will find out about our hearts, and how to keep it healthy, and how to monitor that process
  4. we will watch dissection of the pig heart videos and discuss the process
  5. Pig Heart Dissection upon return to physical classroom

               knowledge.  vocabulary building and art of the heart, drawn and labeled into journals

  9. What is and why is heart rate important?

How is blood pressure measured?  Diastolic and systolic or a normal reading, your blood pressure needs to show a top number that's between 90 and 120, and a bottom number that's between 60 and 80. 6,7 TL’sW learn about their heart rate and the importance of monitoring it throughout their life.  We will do the brainpop’s then finish the information packet on the heart which includes the vocabulary

8,9 TL’sW Dissection of Pig Hearts

Assessments: Informal will be done in individual and group discussions throughout the lab unit

Formal will be a written format and cover all specimens dissected to date.  There will be labeling of pictures, vocabulary matching and fill-in the blank, and true false questions on the test.  During the practicum of the heart there will be feedback from student experts and facilitator.

Materials: Packet as provided by Carolina Biological Company/ Pig Hearts / Scalpel / Mall Probe / Tweezers / newspaper matting /clock / fitness sheet to attach to journal
