Lesson 12 - Opening story

[Music plays in the background as Lucas picks up toys off the living room couch while he looks at his phone.]

Lucas’ Wife: [She calls to Lucas as she is standing at the kitchen counter.] Hey Lucas, whatcha you doing?

Lucas: Still looking for headphones for your brother. [Lucas picks up a toy and puts it in the basket while still looking at his phone.] Hey, these black ones are 4.1 stars and they’re 20 percent off.

Lucas' Wife: Craig likes black [She moves towards the room Lucas is in.]

Lucas: Yeah, but there are these white ones—they’re not on sale, but they’re higher rated.

Lucas' Wife: Hm, five stars?

Lucas: 4.4

[She sits next to Lucas on the couch.]

Lucas' Wife: So, they’re four stars?

Lucas: Hey, there is a difference!

Lucas' Wife: [Laughs]

Lucas: No wait! These red ones are 4.7 stars and 40 percent off—we have a winner.

[Lucas and his wife continue to scroll through the phone.]

Lucas' Wife: Well hey, there you go!

[The Front door opens and Craig enters the room wearing a suit and tie]

Craig: An old gypsy woman said that there’d be tacos!

Lucas' Wife: [To Craig.] You know we only do tacos on tuesday.

Craig: Can you make an exception in my case?

Lucas' Wife: [Calmly.] No.

[Craig looks disappointed by the answer.]

Lucas: So, how did the job interview go?

Craig: I think it went pretty well; there were six other people though, so I’ve got my fingers crossed. [He laughs nervously.]

[He enters the living room and sits down on the couch and then crosses his fingers.]

Lucas: So, when do you hear if you got the job?

Craig: Probably not for another four days at least. They said I’d hear back in about a week.

[Lucas’ wife pulls out her phone and checks a message.]

Lucas' Wife: Hm, do you guys ever get texts from local government? I’ve gotten like three texts from Brian Andrews.

Craig: [With a confused look.] Who?

Lucas: Oh, he’s this guy who’s running for governor. I actually think he may be in the lead; I saw an article about him earlier.

[Lucas pulls out his phone and begins typing on it.]

Yeah,  it says right here: 51 percent of voters are going for Andrews, and only 49 percent are for Garcia.

Lucas' Wife: What’s the margin of error?

Lucas: The article says it’s three percent.

[Lucas looks at his phone briefly.]

Does that make a difference?

Craig: Well, the margin of error—three percent—all that means is that anywhere between 48%–54% percent of voters will choose Andrews, while 46%–52% will choose Garcia: So really, it’s anybody’s game.

 [Lucas's Wife leaves the room.]

Lucas: I’ll think you’ll get the job.

Lucas' Wife: Hey guys, dinner’s ready!

Craig: Nice!

[The two get up from the living room and go into the kitchen as music begins playing.

Chips and plates of sandwiches are on the table.

Lucas sits down and kisses his daughter at the table.

They all speak and laugh inaudibly.]

[End of video.]
