ASBSU Resolution FY2022 - # 03
TITLE: Opposition to efforts to suppress the voting rights of students
DATE OF INTRODUCTION: Wednesday. February 23, 2022
INTRODUCED BY: David Lund, General Assembly; Madeline Gendreau, Student at Large; David Stolworthy, Senate
I. Purpose
To call upon the Idaho Legislature to retain the ability for higher education students to use their student IDs to register to vote
II. Rationale
WHEREAS, House Bill 549 seeks to remove the ability for students to use their university-issued identification cards as valid photo identification to register to vote in the State of Idaho.[1]
WHEREAS, students at all higher education universities which live on campus or in their respective campus communities qualify for residence according to the requirements to register to vote in the State of Idaho.[2]
WHEREAS, students attending Idaho colleges and universities from out of state should be allowed to register to vote and vote in Idaho, as in-person residents of Idaho if they qualify under state law.
WHEREAS, This bill attempts to prevent and dissuade students of Idaho colleges and universities from registering to vote and casting their ballot, which is the definition of voter suppression.[3]
WHEREAS, every citizen of the United States has a constitutional right to register to vote and cast their ballot in the precinct and/or district where they reside.[4]
WHEREAS, the Associated Students of the University of Idaho have already passed a similar Resolution, and the Associated Students of Idaho State University will attempt to pass a similar Resolution this week.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Associated Students of Boise State University call upon the Idaho Legislature to retain the rights of students to use their University-Issued photo identification cards to register to vote in this state, where they reside.
