GENERAL STRATEGIES FOR SAT |
- Use process of elimination to narrow down choices to find BEST answer
- Take time to understand your mistakes while practicing and preparing for exam
- Do not leave any questions blank on exam: GUESS if you are unsure!
- Skip difficult questions and move on, don’t waste time on your test day
- Bubble answers during the last 5 minutes of each section (circle answers in booklet)
- Pack what you need on the day of test in a bag the night before (admission ticket, ID, calculator, pencils, water bottle, snacks, watch to monitor your pacing)
- Eat a good dinner and get good sleep the night before your exam
- Eat a good breakfast the morning of your exam and stay calm as you head to site
- Talk positively to yourself and dismiss negative thoughts, you have prepared and will do the best you possibly can!
SAT READING STRATEGIES
- Pay attention to connotation (positive/negative) and context (contrast words)
- Use “Find the Evidence” questions to your advantage (to answer other questions)
- Use the reading strategy: skim (intro, conclusion, and 1rst/last of each paragraph) and then answer the “main idea” question first (go back and read as needed for other questions)
- Use the reading strategy: skip reading the passage completely, answer questions about small details of the passage first
- Use the reading strategy: read the entire passage if you are fast and thorough
- Don’t ignore the passage introductions (italicized blurb about passage and author)
- Force yourself to be interested in the material, you will remember more about it
- Look for direct evidence in the passage to support the answer you choose
SAT MATH STRATEGIES
*Identify your weaknesses and drill them so you become an expert!
*Know where you are in the test, each math section is arranged easy to hard
*Re work questions you missed before you read through the explanations
*Highlight or underline what you need to find in the question
*Memorize formulas so you don’t waste time looking them up
SAT WRITING STRATEGIES
- Memorize grammar rules
- Be careful with NO CHANGE answers, they are only used 25%
- Skim through the entire paragraph (not just the sentence) to answer rhetorical questions
- If both answers seem grammatically correct, choose the more concise one (fewer words)
GOOD LUCK!
