Here is what’s happening this week!

ELA

Sarah Reams

  • Book clubs - Students are in the fourth cycle of their books. They will be focusing on paraphrasing during this section of text.
  • Vocabulary and Spelling - Students are working on Wordly Wise list 3. Spelling rules this week focus on soft g and soft c, and the suffixes this week are -tion and -ous.
  • Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice - Classes have read and discussed chapter 5, and have read chapter 6.

Math

This week, we began with a quick review of what we have covered so far in our unit on Functions.  We also looked at identifying and writing linear equations from tables and explored how to use Standard Form and Point-Slope to write linear equations.  We are rapidly approaching the conclusion of this unit and will begin preparing for a quiz next week.  4/9

This week students took a unit assessment on European Colonization of America.

We are beginning our next unit on ‘Colonial America 1607-1754)’

  • This new unit will cover:
  • Dutch and French Colonization
  • Lost Colony of Roanoke
  • Jamestown
  • Massachusetts Bay Colony
  • The Great Awakening
  • The Navigation Acts
  • Bacon’s Rebellion
  • Slavery in British Colonies

Student are also responsible for finishing up their Remote Learning Day Assignments in Khan Academy

Spanish 1b students will continue Unit 14: Los niños prisioneros. Students will focus on listening, reading, and writing proficiency through various activities. They will have the opportunity to listen to music, read cultural passages, perform skits, and participate in daily class discussions.

In medical detectives we are learning about body systems. Students are analyzing medical information to diagnose potential patients.

This week, students prepared for a test on the fundamental concepts of coding.  They also continued work on their final project as well.  4/9

Financial Literacy

Diana Jones

We are learning about liabilities, assets and calculating net worth. Students are beginning a ‘Celebrity Net Worth Project’ which we will be working on through this week and next week. as students research and construct a one-pager on their chosen celebrity.

Beth Burroughs

Learning terms and definitions that will be important throughout our unit. Making predictions on career choices, living situations, types of vehicles, cost of living….

Sarah Reams

We have started Unit 2: Budgeting and Saving! Students will learn about fixed vs. variable expenses, creating a budget, banking basics, and how to save money. They will also complete a budget simulation.

Art

Nate Barton

We have begun practicing the techniques used to create photorealism. Students will then use these techniques to make a self portrait.

This project is annually a highlight and it is one that I do with all of my classes every year.

I will look forward to showing you some of their work in the near future.
