AWSP News for October 17, 2018

Hello and welcome to another episode of AWSP’s News You Can Use. I’m not Scott Seaman. I’m Scott Friedman, one of the newest Directors at AWSP who is assigned to the amazing 509 area code.

Thanks to all of you who continue to fill out our survey on principal pay. Taking the time to give us that information is helping us have data-based conversations with stakeholders throughout the educational world. Keep it up.

Remember, AWSP is structured and governed by K-12 principal and assistant principal representatives throughout the state. Our annual fall board meetings are only a week away, so if there are topics that you’d like to see discussed by those who represent you, then get in touch with them ASAP. Not sure who represents you? Give us a call.

Calling is important, but so is a personal face to face meeting and this is exactly what members of our Advocacy Committee have been doing.  They have been canvasing the state meeting with our elected leaders distributing PAC checks that will directly support their campaign efforts. This face time is important as we continue to share our story and keep the importance of supporting school leadership on the forefront. Now is a great time to reach out to your local representatives and invite them into your school.

In a short couple of months, the Legislature will kick off their session and we at AWSP are preparing for the session by developing our Advocacy Platform. At its heart, the focus will be on equitable funding, quality workforce, and student interventions. The platform is currently in its development and we welcome any and all thoughts you might have around these three topics.  Have ideas? Contact Roz.

Special thanks to Clear Risk Solutions and Seattle Pacific University for their AWSP sponsorships this school year! Companies like Clear Risk and SPU support our efforts to bring principals the latest news and education information. Learn more about our business sponsors and partners on the AWSP website.

It’s week 3 of National Principals Month, and we’re celebrating YOU! We’ve been giving away AWSP-branded Amazon gift cards to five principals each week who answer our Facebook prompts. Last week’s question was, “If a genie came along and granted you one professional wish, what would it be?”

We got several great responses. Here are a couple:

“The magical power to remember every student’s name, all 2000 of them!” - Eric Anderson, Principal at Wenatchee High

“My wish would be to have student housing for my students who are homeless and to have a community health center at school (including mental health services) for my students and their families.” - Heather Fowler, Principal, Legacy High, Evergreen PS

This week’s prompt is, “What made you decide to become a principal/AP?” Head to our facebook page and let us know.

We'll choose five of our favorite text, photo or video comments to win a $25 Amazon gift card for you to use back in your school. Don't forget to check out www.principalsmonth.org for some awesome resources, and use #thankaprincipal in your National Principals Month social media posts!

AWSL’s "Starting in the Middle" has just been rewritten and redesigned. What is it? Think of it as a resource book for teaching leadership concepts to middle level students. In addition to 84 brand-new and revamped lessons for both formal and informal classrooms, a section of “20 for 20” lessons contains twenty minute lessons designed for school-wide use in advisory or homeroom settings. You’ll also find resources for structuring a middle level student leadership program, aligning leadership instruction to standards, icebreakers, and organizational tools. Check it out at www.AWSLeaders.org.

You know what else is cool? Last week we christened our brand new Production Studio with an incredible interview with Dr. Caprice Hollins. This interview is powerful and will be coming soon to a monitor near you. In the meantime, get ready for even more powerful resources coming from the AWSP Studios.

Well, that’s it from all of us here at AWSP. I’ve gotta run back to the east side. As always, see you next time and keep up the great work for kids!
