Significant of Toxic Series Collection to Toxic Masculinity

“Toxic Masculinity is a double edged sword”

The purpose of the “Toxic Series Design” is to criticize the influence of this culture on a boy and a man. The items in this collection are made to violate ergonomics when used. These items are difficult to use and even pose dangers to their users due to their awkward and ridiculous designs. The collection embodies the “standard configuration” of men in the eyes of toxic masculinity that dictates men and males have to be a certain way in order to uphold the rigid standards of “masculinity”. As a result, people who perpetuate toxic masculinity hurt those around them including themselves making the culture in itself a double edged sword.

Significance of materials used

Air dry clay

Air dry clay is a type of material that is soft and malleable in the beginning, responsive to change and moldable into any shape but dries down hard and rigid, no longer responsive to attempts of changing its shape. The clay symbolizes young boys who are impressionable and vulnerable, susceptible to change, being molded into adult men who are stoic and tough due to constant exposure to the culture of toxic masculinity.

Black paint

The color black used to paint the entirety of the items’ surfaces is used to symbolize “masculinity” as those who believe in the culture often stray away from colors that are bright and/or associated

with femininity such as pink and purple.

Green paint

The bright green color used to make marks on the items symbolize the “toxicity” that marrs the concept of masculinity with its intense demands and unattainable standards. The splashes of green acts as a taint of toxicity on masculinity due to the culture of Toxic Masculinity.

Display container

The display container takes on the shape of a house with its pointed top to symbolize the early exposure to toxic masculinity beginning from home. From young, many boys are told not to cry when they fall down, to stray away from “girly toys” and to pursue “masculine hobbies” like sports by the people in their home; parents and relatives. This is to show that in many instances, the culture of toxic masculinity begins at home.
