Storing or transporting compressed gas cylinders.

Explosion of compressed gas.

Store small compressed gas cylinders in flammable storage cabinet away from heat sources.

Ventilate confined areas.

Failure to ventilate work areas can result in the inhalation of fumes.

Use ventilating fans and exhaust hoods to carry all fumes and gases away from work area.

Make proper selection of filler metals.

Overheating filler metals containing cadmium will cause the metal to volatilize  and produce toxic fumes.

Consult Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for recommended brazing temperatures of a specific filler metal.

Carefully examine base metals.

Some base metals contain zinc or cadmium coatings which fume when heated.

Learn to recognize coatings.  Consult the SDS and warning labels on the filler metal.

Remove coatings before heating for brazing

Clean selected base metals thoroughly.

Surface contaminant of unknown composition on base metals may add to or cause fume hazards, overheating  of flux, weak solder or weld.

Clean base metals of rust, dirt, soot, or other forms of corrosion.

Use sand paper, thinner, rubbing alcohol, wire brushes to clean metal.

Soldering and brazing

Cylinder rupturing when torch is turned on.

Turn the regulator adjusting screw counterclockwise to disengage plunger before turning on cylinder.

Burning self.

Wear safety goggles, gloves, flammable resistant clothing.  Always burn away from yourself

Starting a fire.

Do not solder or braze near flammable materials.  Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby.

Flammable gas build up.

Check connections for leaks and damage before using.

Use in well ventilated area.
