Course Description

Students must successfully complete this physical science course in order to meet graduation requirements. All course material is aligned with the state mandated Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) for Physical Science. Students will investigate introductory physics and chemistry concepts through laboratories and classwork using science and engineering practices to identify cross-cutting concepts of science. For further information concerning the Chemistry Curriculum visit www.georgiastandards.org.

The following are the Chemistry GSE topics in the state of Georgia:

SPS1: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information from the Periodic Table to explain the relative properties of elements based on patterns of atomic structure.
SPS2: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain how atoms bond to form stable compounds.
SPS3: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to support the Law of Conservation of Matter.
SPS4: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the changes in nuclear structure as a result of fission, fusion and radioactive decay.
SPS5: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and contrast the phases of matter as they relate to atomic and molecular motion.
SPS6: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the properties of solutions.
SPS7: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain transformations and flow of energy within a system.
SPS8: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the relationships among force, mass, and motion.
SPS9: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the properties of waves.
SPS10: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the properties of and relationships between electricity and magnetism.

Grading Policy

The student’s course average will be determined as follows:

Eighteen Weeks Average – 80%
Final Exam – 20%

The eighteen week average will be determined using a variety of assignments. Percentages follow:

Homework/Classwork/Notebook assignments--30%

Labs/Projects--30%

Lab grades MAY consist of both participation and lab quiz. If a lab is missed, STUDENTS are responsible for making arrangements to make this up either before or after school. A Flinn Safety Contract MUST be signed by student/parent to participate in labs (page attached).

Tests/Quizzes--40%

If a test is missed, STUDENTS are responsible for making arrangements to make this up either before or after school.

The eighteen week average is cumulative. Progress reports will be sent out at the 4 ½ week intervals to help you monitor your student’s progress. Work is to be completed and turned in on the due date. The policy for late assignments is as follows:

1 week late ⇒ 15 points off • 2 weeks late ⇒ 30 points off • 3/more weeks late ⇒ ½ credit

Rules and Expectations

Students are expected to maintain appropriate behavior at all times. The classroom Discipline Plan must be signed by a parent/guardian and the student (see separate page). Students are expected to be attentive during class time. The discipline procedures are posted in the room and provided on the attached discipline plan. Extreme misbehavior will result in immediate dismissal from the class to see an administrator.

TARDIES: The school policy will be followed for tardiness.

HALL PASSES: Hall passes should be requested only in the event of an emergency. You will be given ten hall passes for the semester. After all of your hall passes have been used, you must serve 10 minutes detention if you must go somewhere. Use your hall passes wisely!
