NATURE OF WORK
This is manual to skilled work in the operation of a variety of heavy weight and specialized highway maintenance equipment and road construction equipment, and the performance of a variety of related maintenance tasks on highways and roadways.
Work involves the responsibility for the application of considerable skill and manipulative ability in the safe and efficient operation of various heavy equipment familiar to the highway maintenance and construction industry.
Work also involves the operation of light-to-medium weight and specialized highway maintenance equipment and performing a variety of manual labor tasks associated with highway repair and maintenance.
The work of this class is distinguished by the nature of the equipment operated and the nature of other responsibilities through special assignments. Work is generally performed independently according to oral or written assignments or established policies/practices under limited supervision with direction from the Maintenance Supervisor.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Operates a variety of heavy equipment especially motor graders, dozers, backhoe/loaders, loaders along with all related equipment necessary for highway repair and maintenance. Operates all types of highway maintenance and/or construction equipment when so assigned. Performs blading or road surface and shoulder smoothing. Performs bituminous blade patching. Performs snowplowing. Performs servicing and field maintenance or running repairs on equipment. Performs a variety of manual tasks related to highway maintenance such as crack sealing, patching, brushing, cleaning, and repairing culverts, cleaning, and painting bridges, restoring erosion, repairing potholes, repairing, and replacing signs, erecting safety barricades, etc. May perform and / or assist with the shop mechanical duties for major repairs of assigned equipment. May perform lead work duties, especially as related small crew leader and garage responsibilities. May perform Lead Maintenance Worker duties. May perform a variety of duties assisting with general building repairs. Performs related work as required.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
A combination substantially equivalents to considerable experience in the operation and servicing of a variety of heavy highway maintenance and/or construction equipment as well as experience in regular and routine highway maintenance activities.

Must have demonstrated ability in equipment operation and possess a valid upgraded driver license (CDL/A = Commercial driver license for combination vehicles, single unit vehicle over 26,000 pounds towing a unit of more than 10,000 pounds with air brake and tanker endorsements minimum, hazardous and passenger endorsements desirable).
KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the principles of operation and servicing of all types of highway maintenance and /or construction equipment including the adaptations and specialized uses to which equipment can be put in meeting not only routine but emergence conditions. Knowledge of standard and specialized general highway maintenance techniques and procedures. Knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations. Knowledge of the maintenance and servicing requirements of assigned equipment. Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in the operation of highway and/or construction equipment. Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations related to highway maintenance operations. Ability to make operating adjustments and field repairs on assigned equipment. Ability to perform strenuous work under varying labor conditions. Ability to perform a variety of maintenance repair, and construction related assignments. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, both in terms of work order and equipment operations and repairs. Skill in the operation of a variety of highway and/or construction related equipment, specifically the operation of a motor grader, dozer, loader, backhoe/loader, and dump truck.
