Hello Families,
A few families have asked me to create a book list for second graders. By no means does this include ALL chapter books for second graders. This list does offer a wide variety of interests. As with all books, students should do the five finger test as they choose a book to read independently.
Five Finger Test
Step 1. Choose a random page in the middle of the book
Step 2. Read that page. If a student misses:
1 word: Good choice book- Read Independently
2 words: Chunk sounds- Read Independently
3 words: Challenging book -partner read EEKK
4 words: Challenging book- read with an adult EEKK
5 words: Very challenging book- Adult reads book to you EEKK
EEKK: elbow to elbow and knee to knee,
Book series: Introduction to chapter books:
- Series books are great because students become familiar with characters, and the author’s writing style. Most second graders can read these books by themselves. However, these books may need to start off as shared books.
- Young Cam Jansen: David A. Adler: Independent
- Nate the Great: Marjorie Weinman Sharmat: Independent
- Henry and Mudge series Cynthia Rylant: Independent
Shared Books: Shared books are meant for an adult reader sitting partner style EEKK. This is to help with decoding and chunking challenging words into familiar sound patterns. This will help build confidence for young readers. If they miss a word, try saying, “try again partner” while helping kiddos chunk words into sound patterns.
