Dissenters is hiring a Field Organizer!

This is a full time, remote/in-person hybrid, salaried position. The starting salary range is $50,000 to $60,000/year with full benefits, and may be negotiated for highly experienced applicants.

Dissenters is a national anti-militarism youth organization, with youth members representing over 25 colleges and cities across the country. In our programs to date, we have prioritized the leadership of Black student leaders, and rigorously ensure that a supermajority of our identified student leaders are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), as we build this anti-militarist youth movement.  We are hiring a full-time Field Organizer to provide in-depth support to our new and emerging student leaders to launch and win local strategic direct action campaigns across the country. In addition to remote support, Field Organizers will be expected to travel for in-person chapter visits and trainings 6-7 times per year, as COVID safety protocols allow.

Core Responsibilities (70%)

• Coach and develop strong member leaders through weekly one-on-one check-ins and ad-hoc support (10-15 one-on-ones per week), with an emphasis on Black, Indigenous, and young people directly impacted by militarism
• Build new chapters: recruit new members through cold outreach, classroom visits, and networking. Work with new members to launch new local chapters and campaign from scratch
• Organize and coach student leaders to run effective anti-militarist campaigns on their campuses and advise on research, messaging, tactics, targets, escalation, and all components of a local campaign
• Organize coordinated direct actions and days of action across regions and campaign issues
• Host national calls and ensure in-depth member engagement
• As pandemic safety restrictions allow, travel to conduct in-person chapter visits to provide on the ground training and support for meetings, actions, and local strategy sessions

Additional responsibilities (30%)

• Support development and execution of trainings, fellowships, and other programs
• Coordinate national committees to provide political education, messaging guidance, and national network of support
• Integrate grassroots fundraising into campaign work and base-building
• Work with staff collective to ensure overall health of the organization

We’re looking for someone with:

• 2+ years experience with organizing campaigns, with an emphasis on youth and student organizing
• A proven track record of recruiting and developing strong leaders
• Experience working on strategic direct action campaigns, ideally from start to finish
• Strong facilitation and training skills
• Ability to work both independently and on teams
• Excellent time management skills
• Able to set and be accountable to own work plan
• Commitment to Dissenters principles, Black liberation, abolition, transformative justice
• Personal stake in the anti-militarism movement
• Passion for youth leadership development – this is what you wake up wanting to do everyday!

Other Pluses:

• Experience running organizing training programs
• Digital organizing experience
• Press and narrative strategy experience
• Holds relationships in anti-militarism and/or youth organizing ecosystem
• Expertise in issues of militarism
• Comfort with public speaking
• Strong writing skills
• Experience with grassroots fundraising
• Drivers license (for travel to regions without public transit)

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time, 40 hours/week position. Full benefits include 100% employer covered medical, dental and vision insurance, cell phone and home office reimbursement allowances, as well as generous vacation and sick days.

Work Environment

Field Organizers will report to the Organizing Director. This is a remote/in-person hybrid position. Team communications predominantly take place on Zoom, Slack, email, phone, text. Field Organizers will be expected to travel for trainings, conferences, and campus visits as COVID safety protocols allow.
