Lab Code of Conduct
Be professional and responsible.
Respect and support each other in a collegial manner. We are a TEAM.
Respect all work spaces, equipment, and communal lab and office areas.
Keep work spaces and communal areas in the lab and office clean.
Respect the time of others. Be punctual for one-on-one weekly meetings, lab meetings, seminars, and scheduled training and equipment reservations (e.g. cell sorting).
If working in the lab alone late after regular work hours, let UM security know. Use safe walk or ride which is offered by UM security (see contact numbers below).
Lab members are here to learn. Listen to and help one another when help is sought.
Keep an open mind to suggestions from trainees at all levels.
Engage in mutual collaborations within and outside of the lab.
Ask questions! All questions are welcome.
Read the scientific literature related to your research project and interests.
Don’t be afraid to be creative in science and willing to share your scientific ideas with the lab.
Be open to trying new techniques or alternative methods.
Be motivated to learn and develop scientific skills (logical and critical thinking, research design, troubleshooting, scientific writing, data analysis and interpretation, etc.)
Be open to develop key transferable skills (leadership, communication through writing and oral presentation, how to be a good team member, etc.)
Be open to receiving constructive criticism.
Be cognizant of cultural sensitivity. There can be many differences and similarities between cultures – we are to educate ourselves on this to respect and value one another. This will allow us to effectively function as a TEAM.
Be mindful of preferred pronouns and be considerate of your language towards and around others in and outside of the lab setting.
Encourage and include one another during lab and department events.
Respect each other’s privacy.
Offensive behavior and discrimination are not welcome in this lab.
Racism or any form of harassment is not tolerated in this lab.
This lab embraces equity and diversity and is committed to an inclusive training and learning environment. Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and to be given the opportunity to learn and succeed in this lab.
It is expected that all lab members keep in mind this Lab Code of Conduct.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns; or if you observe or are concerned about an inappropriate occurrence in the lab, please don’t hesitate to approach and discuss with Janilyn or with human resources.
