And if we are, what kind of work we can or can't do. I'd like to also, if I can find a very modern poskim, discuss whether we should be making every effort to take vacation days so as not to work on Hol haMoed.

רב עובדיה יוסף ז"ל - Rav Ovadia Yosef z”l

A Story - of Tea

An 18th-century Japanese nobleman had a tea maker, and one day he asked him to accompany him to the great city of Edo (later Tokyo). He wanted to show off to his friends in his professional tea-maker. The tea maker knew all about the tea ceremony, but nothing more. As the tea making ritual rules required, a tea-maker should dress as a samurai, a Japanese warrior.

One day, when the tea-maker was walking down the street, he ran into a real samurai who invited him to a duel. The tea-maker was not a warrior, and knew nothing about sword art, and he even explained it to the samurai, but he would not listen. If you are dressed as a samurai, you must fight as a man!

Rejecting an invitation for a fight means in Japan to disgrace your family and your master, so the tea-maker had to accept the invitation, although that means certain death. He only asked that the battle be held the next day, and his request was accepted.

The tea-maker was close to panic, and he ran to a fighting school. If he was about to die, at least he would do it with dignity! The schoolmaster would never have accepted a man without recommendations, but the tea-maker's desperation touched him. He agreed to teach the tea-maker the art of death, but first he asked for tea. Our man performed the ceremony as required, quietly, with concentration and peace. When the school principal saw this, he shouted, "You do not have to learn the art of death, your mental state is now enough to deal with any samurai, and when you see your enemy, feel as if you are serving tea." The ceremony was over, and the tea-maker felt that he was ready to die.

The next day the samurai was astonished to discover how peacefully the man stood before him, slowly taking off his coat and slowly holding the sword. “Perhaps,” the samurai asked himself, “this tea-maker is actually a skilled sword holder, a great master, who can easily kill me?!” He bowed to the tea-maker, apologized for his behavior the day before, and hurried away.

Community Matters

Ahavat Yisrael and Ahavat Haberiyot, love for the Jewish people and love for all humanity, are values central to the Bayit’s mission to be a warm, welcoming, and inclusive community.

We encourage all dwellers of the Bayit - individuals, tefilot, and communities - to read the full policy on the CPC page of the Bayit website in order to learn about the practices and protocols that are designed to help prevent abuse of children from occurring in the Bayit.

Appropriate boundaries are tools for fostering the healthy warmth, welcome and inclusivity we seek to create. Appropriate boundaries protect children as well as adults and help to create a safe environment for all.

Cleaning after Kiddush. We ask all adults and kids alike to help in keeping the bet-keneset organized, and to help with clean-up after kiddush. TODA RABA :)

Reading Aliya laTorah: It has been our practice that the Olim laTorah may read their portion. Please practice your Aliya well, including the Teamim. Errors of pronunciation and intonation distort the Torah text and its sanctified meaning. If you need help in learning how to read, email us.

In the Good News

That’s Incredible!
In early 2022, a biblical research team discovered a lead tablet on Mt. Ebal at Joshua’s Altar that they claim contains the oldest extant Hebrew inscription. The finding has been confirmed as accurate over the past year. According to the team, the inscription, which dates to the Late Bronze Age II period (c. 1400–1200 BCE), is a legal text and curse that invokes the name of Hash-em. It echoes the ritual Joshua conducted at the Mountain following the crossing of the Jordan River, as described in Deuteronomy 27 and the Book of Joshua 8:30-35. The team believes the tablet is one of the most important inscriptions ever found in Israel, predating the previously earliest known Hebrew inscription by several hundred years, and one that could drastically alter our reconstruction of ancient Israel’s earliest history.

For us, the believers, it is a “Shabbat Shalom” from Yehoshua bin Nun.

In the Beginning

“One of the most startling phenomena I ever witnessed occured in the South after the Arab- israelei Six-day war. I doubt if the world has ever seen such a rapid ceasefire in anti-semetism. I heard one Southern man after another say in tones that i can only describe as gleeful: 'by dern, those Jew boys sure can fight!' One man seriously recommended that Congress pass a special act making Moshe Dayan an American citizen so that he could become Secretary of Defense. He had obviously found a new hero;'as he put it 'That one-eyed b**tid would wipe out anybody offin the map whut gave us any trouble.”

Cyril Zooms In

“Kid, you'll move mountains.” ― Dr. Seuss (Oh, the Places You'll Go!)

This week's double parasha, Behar ("At the mountain") and Bechukotai ("in accordance with My rules"), is contradictory by nature. The first parasha is providing rules about the land’s rest, real estate ownership, charging interests in loans and slavery that do not seem to make much sense. The first question that comes to mind when reading it is: Is G-d a socialist? Perhaps some early Jewish socialists saw in this parasha the premises of Marxism. But they were flatly wrong. A mountain symbolizes by its impressive height a certain pride and self-assertion. On the other end, obeying to G-d’s rules and will, especially when it seems irrational, is a mark of abnegation and humble submission. This is exactly what the second parasha is teaching us: G-d’s rules are irrational but this is why we must follow them or else! Our natural attraction to rationality can lead to many excesses, including arrogance and cruelty. However, pushing the reset button every 7 and 50 years is a symbolic release from such excesses. Also, it is a way to acknowledge that everything we possess does not come from our own merit but out of G-d’s mercy. Our fortunes are fragile and depend on an suprarational factor we cannot control. This is the best remedy against greed and materialism. Above all, it makes perfect sense when we understand that following G-d’s rules make us move mountains. Yes, we have the power to better ourselves, as we are mountains of pride. Wishing you and your family a high, restful, and joyful Shabbat. Shabbat Shalom! C.B.

Rav Question - שאלת רב

One can close his/her mind from seeing misdoings;

One can also close his/her ears from hearing mistruths;

But can one shut his/her heart from feeling it?

Weekly Moment

Sometimes a man should speak quietly to see who really listens to him.
Sometimes a man should run to see who will follow him.

Jewish World - The Codex Goes Back Home

The world's oldest and most complete Hebrew Bible sold for $38.1 million on Wednesday, Sotheby’s said, one of the highest prices ever for a book or document sold at auction.

The Codex Sassoon, written around the year 900, is named after a previous owner, David Solomon Sassoon, who acquired the Bible in 1929 and assembled one of the most significant private collections of Judaica and Hebraica manuscripts of the 20th century.

The buyer of  the Codex Sassoon was revealed to be the philanthrop Alfred Moses, a former US ambassador to Romania, and his family. The purchase was made for ANU - Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv.  The purchase officially returned to the Jewish Homeland what was hers since 900 CE.

Ktav Parasha - Bəmidbar

Parashat Bamidbar - "And the L-d spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai..."

The voice of Torah rises from the desert. If the voice of the Torah would have risen from the place of human habitation, it would have become the sole domain of one tribe or one nation. But in the desert, among the sands, in the no-man's land that belongs to no one and not to the public, a divine moral doctrine has been created, which must be an asset of all humanity.

Let us merit true unity and truly acceptance of the Torah by all ‘Am Yisrael and by all Zera’ Yisrael and by all the world’s nations.

Shabbat shel Shalom and Ḣodesh Sivan Tov! tbs

A HiStory – of war

This coming Sunday, June 5, will mark the day in which the Six Day War started. The War began on Iyar 26, 5727, June 5 1967.

- Yerushalayim was freed on the third day, June 7, or Iyar 28, which became the Yom Yerushalayim celebration.

- By the end of the third day also the entire Yehuda v'Shomron and 'Aza were liberated by Israeli soldiers.

- On the fourth day, Iyar 29 or June 8, the IDF reached the Suez Canal, and completed the control over the Sinai Peninsula.

- Day six, which was Sivan 2,  then June 10, marks the end of the War, with full liberation of Ramat haGolan.

- Secret: The last move of the War was on Sivan 4, June 12, with the IDF taking over Har haHermon, yet with no battle.

- Shall we call it The Eight Day War?

Riddle Solved

When G-d gave Moses the two tablets on Mount Sinai
