Blizzard Bags @ Rochester Middle School

For the 2018 / 2019 school year, Rochester Middle School will be participating in a Rochester School Department Blizzard Bag Pilot. A full overview of the Blizzard Bag Pilot was included in the November 2nd issue of the Howler. You can read this overview at this link https://rebrand.ly/howler11218.

Blizzard Bag Guidelines

  1. The purpose of blizzard bag are to replace a day of school and not adding a school day in June. The teacher’s blizzard bag preparation, being available during the blizzard bag day, and collecting and correcting the assignments would equal a day during the school year. Students are expected to complete the required work and 80% of the students in the District need to complete  the work for the day to count as a blizzard bag day.

  1. Blizzard Bags will be used for up to three snow day replacements during the 2018-2019 school year.

  1. The Superintendent’s office will announce the blizzard bag as part of the school cancellation process.

  1. Blizzard Bags will normally be on alternating snow days (first day - no, second day - yes, up to three blizzard bag days per year) If power issues may be widespread, a blizzard bag may not be declared.

  1. Blizzard bags should include up to four hours of student activities.

  1. The students will have 2 school days after the blizzard bag day to turn in the work.

  1. All staff should be available to answer email questions from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. and 1:30 P.M. to 2:30 P.M.

  1. The students are expected to get their assignments on Google Classroom and follow the instructions for each class on the Google Classroom. If a student does not have internet

access, they can pick up a blizzard bag in the classroom prior to a potential snow day, or

immediately after the snow day.

  1. Students not completing blizzard bags will have the day will count as an absence.  This is a School Board policy, and a requirement of the Department of Education for having Blizzard Bag days.

Accessing RMS Blizzard Bags

As specified in the Blizzard Bag Guidelines, Blizzard Bags will be distributed via Google Classroom (http://classroom.google.com). Students will need to log in using their SAU 54 Google Account. Please note that Google Classroom cannot be accessed by GMail accounts, just SAU 54 Google Accounts. Blizzard Bags will be made up of content from three sources: Team Teachers, Unified Arts, and Guidance. For the day to count, students will have to complete the work from all three sources. Most students have already been oriented to the Google Classrooms they will need for their Blizzard Bags. In case they have not, the classroom codes for each Google Classroom is listed below. Student will be able to find their Blizzard Bag assignments on the Classwork stream in Google Classroom. Students without technology access will be provided paper copies of the assignments that they can pick up from their academic team.
