17th Annual Young Writers Juried Exposition: Call for Young Writers!

Once again, Crooked Tree Arts Center is hosting the Young Writers Juried Exposition as part of the annual Youth Arts Festival. In conjunction with the Petoskey News-Review, the Bob Schulze Fund for Creative Writing at the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, McLean & Eakin Booksellers, and Walloon Writers Review, CTAC is putting out the call for young writers. Elementary, middle, and high school students who attend schools served by the Char-Em ISD (or home school students in Charlevoix or Emmet counties) are invited to submit one work of poetry, prose, or one of each to the 17th Annual Young Writers Juried Exposition.

Winning writers of all three age groups receive a medal, journal, and McLean & Eakin Booksellers gift card, while also having their work published in the Petoskey News-Review. Middle and high school winning writers receive monetary prizes as well: 1st place - $100; 2nd place - $75; and 3rd place - $50. All first place winning writers get their work printed in the upcoming edition of the Walloon Writers Review.

“I started Walloon Writers Review to create a vehicle for sharing memories, stories and reflections of the natural beauty of this area in writing and photography in a way that everyone could have access to and enjoy,” said Jennifer Huder, Editor in Chief of the Walloon Writers Review. “By design, both new and published writers are included to reflect a sense of community and to encourage new writers to contribute. Including the winning entries from CTAC’s Young Writers Juried Exposition is exciting on two levels: readers can experience the creativity, voices, and fresh perspective of these young, talented students and inspire other young people to write and share their writing.”

All work for the Young Writers Juried Exposition must be submitted online by a parent or teacher beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2 through 5 p.m. on Friday, April 12. The submission page is located under Teacher Resources on the Petoskey portion of Crooked Tree’s website.

The Young Writers Juried Exposition Awards Reception takes place on Saturday, May 11 at Crooked Tree Arts Center from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., during which all winning writers will have an opportunity to read their work on stage. From Noon – 2 p.m., guests can enjoy the Youth Arts Festival’s Culinary Arts Showcase with students from the Petoskey High School Culinary Arts Program serving refreshments.

The Young Writers Juried Exposition is generously supported in part by the Bob Schulze Fund for Creative Writing at the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation. The Culinary Arts Showcase is supported in part by Lynn Dinning and Good Hart Glass Works.
