The first transferable skill I learned was communication. In the design and planning phase of the music magazine project I had to communicate what I would be doing when I was a model so where I was going, what I would be wearing and what time. I also had to communicate with my models beforehand to tell them what I was planning, what they should be wearing and doing etc. This skill is very useful for not only more school work but for everyday life and work in the future and it is something that can be transferred to many different things.

The next transferable skill I learned was team working skills. This does link with communication skills but I think it deserves its own mention as it will be very useful in the future. I learned this skill through working as different people model and talking to my own models, and working together to try and get the best images. Not only did I work on this skill in the moment of the photoshoot but also through the planning and editing stages as you need to plan with everyone before hand but also after the shoots we could help each other out in the editing stage.

This final transferable skill is organisation. I learned this skill through the planning and editing stages. Firstly when planning I needed to try and find all the things I needed as well as being organised enough to give the models time to find things before the shoot. During the editing stage I had to be organised to create all the different pages in time and to keep myself on track. This skill will be useful in many different occasions and will help me in lots of things in my life that I need to organise and be prepared for.

My first technical skill I learned was when I was working with a camera. I needed to know how to focus the camera and to get the right amount of light that I wanted. I needed to use the camera in a way so that I could get the right angles and shots. This type of skill will be very useful in a number of jobs in the media world and possible outside the media world.

The second technical skill I learned was with the photo editing stage of the project. I am not claiming I know all the features of photoshop because there are too many, but I have learned to use photoshop to a standard where I can turn my vision into something on the screen. I was given a good amount of time to play around and learn as I went and I ended up with a group of images that I was happy with and were ready to go into my magazine. Being able to use photoshop to a good standard I think is very useful because of many jobs now days that are based in the media world.

My final technical skill was the skill using indesign. Again I’m not saying I know every feature of indesign and I can fix any problem, but I think I have a good idea of all the basic features of indesign and can use it competently. I developed my skills in the editing stage of the project and after I had got an image ready for the particular page I needed I would go to work creating the page for my magazine. One particular tool I used quite often was the gradient feather tool, it allowed me to create more exciting backgrounds instead of just a solid colour background. Being able to use indesign in the future will be very useful because lots of media based jobs could require knowledge on this type of software.

My first creative production skill was using mise en scene. It’s about trying to show meaning and tell a clear story through the images. Probably my biggest aim throughout my photo shoot was trying to make my images fit my genre and I think I did manage to achieve that. I learned these skills right from the start at the planning stages, I needed to think what I would need in terms of costume and props to make sure they fit the genre and showed some story or meaning. I also had to plan out where I should take my photos, I was allowed to go pretty much anywhere as long as it a was at the location of our shoot so I needed to choose the right places. The skills of using mise en scene I think will be very useful in many media based jobs.

My next creative production skill is based around the branding and layout of my music magazine pages. When it came to putting my magazine together in the editing phase of the project I had to think about the overall look, appeal and audience for my magazine. I needed to think who it was for and why would these people buy it. The layout was also a creative part of the magazine that I spent a lot of time on. I played around with the layout of my front cover for a long time and it took me a long time to get something I was happy with but eventually I found on that I liked and it fit the conventions of a rock magazine. At the start I was new to indesign and through playing around and with some help I developed my skill and ideas so now I can create something I am very happy with.

So in media you get to learn and develop loads of skill while having lots of fun.
