CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Shakespeare, Dickens, Austen and Hawthorne! Huckleberry Finn, Pilgrim’s Progress, Jane Eyre and Christmas Carol! Frederick Douglass, Jonathan Edwards, Jekyll & Hyde and “Modest Proposal”!
All that and more is covered in this survey of British and American lit. from 1600-1900. Readings will begin with one of Shakespeare’s finest, Twelfth Night (1601), and run right up to H.G. Wells’s War of the Worlds in 1898; we’ll also include documents from some of America’s Founding Fathers.
The previous syllabus is available on request, though Smith and Roe may change it a bit over the summer.
This class is designed to run in conjunction with Mrs. Roe’s high school history course.
HOMEWORK:
Regular readings, with 1-2 weeks to finish each work depending on length. Worksheet/discussion questions on the writings. Several essays.

Combination of all the above, plus class participation. Extra credit generally available.
Different assignments receive different weights depending on difficulty, length, etc.

All reading books as laid out in the syllabus, which will be available late summer. Shorter works like founding documents, some poems & stories (and “Modest Proposal”) provided by teacher. Teacher very strongly urges the Cliff’s Complete version of Twelfth Night.
