Anointed to Serve

Opening:

Text:

1 Samuel 9:25 - 10:1 (KJV) And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house. 26 And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad. 27 And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.

1 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

  1. Appointed
  1. By God
  2. For A Purpose
  3. In Secret
  1. Example of Joseph
  2. Example of Moses
  1. Anointed— The purpose of Saul’s Anointing was to dedicate him to God for the special task for which he was called and to impart to him enabling grace and gifts.[1]
  1. Dedicated
  1. Sanctified/Set apart
  2. Set apart from others
  3. Set apart to God
  1. Empowered
  1. In the strictest sense we do not seek God’s anointing each time we minister.  One is anointed for the task to which he/she has been called.  While it is not something to split hairs over a preacher should not desire to be anointed to preach a sermon when he has already been anointed for the ministry to which he is fulfilling.  It is more properly said that he seeks the unction of the Spirit.
  2. God’s Spirit prepared Saul for kingship.[2]
  3. Saul desired to worship God but continually struggled with wanting to do things his own way.[3]
  1. Obedient
  1. Changed—God changed the inner disposition of Saul through his anointing by the Holy Spirit (v.6)
  2. Not without Condition—This change was not unconditional or permanent, but something that could be maintained only by holy fellowship with and loving obedience to God.[4]
  3. A Good Start: Saul had a changed heart, an empowering of the Holy Ghost, a humble attitude, the guidance and prayers of Samuel, and the gift of prophecy.  His yielding to the flesh brought him: pride of position, monarchial power, personal insecurities, and spiritual insensitivity.[5]
  4. Guidelines for Israel’s King—Rather than being an absolute monarch, Israel’s king was to be a theocratic king, subject to God as the ultimate Ruler of the people.[6]  Deuteronomy 17:14-20 (KJV) When thou art come unto the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me; 15 Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the Lord thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother. 16 But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the Lord hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way. 17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold. 18 And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites: 19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them: 20 That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.
  1. Chosen by God
  2. An Israelite
  3. Not to Multiply Horses
  4. Not to Return to Egypt—specifically for the purpose of horses but general to not rely upon them for help or return to bondage
  5. Not to Multiply Wives
  6. Not to Multiply Wealth
  7. Make a Written Copy of The Law (Scripture)
  8. Read Scripture Daily
  1. Affirmed
  1. Confirmed to Self
  2. Confirmed to Public
