Local solutions to a global crisis
Presented by Elena Korbut,
Community Engagement Manager – Refugee Services
at Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston
United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) annual report shows that at the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide at the end of 2017 has grown to 68.5 million, including 25.4 million refugees.
With the ever-growing number of refugees worldwide, what is the United States’ response? How has Presidential Determination affected the number of refugees resettled in the US and Houston in FY2017 and FY2019? I will discuss the refugee resettlement process and the services Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston provides to refugees starting new lives in Houston. I will look at the impact of administration’s policies on our program and discuss ways that our agency continues to serve the needs of refugees, well beyond the initial resettlement services and how members of our community can support refugee families building new lives in Houston.
