Course: 10th Grade

English II/ World Literature

Goals: By the end of the year, students will feel comfortable analyzing literature on a deeper level, participating in and leading class discussions, and communicating effectively through writing.

What a typical day looks like:  -Read independently for ten minutes

 -M.U.G. (mechanics, usage, and grammar): mini-lesson

-Study novel together

 -Essays/Projects: I will teach skills/lessons needed for essays or  a project, and then students will have class time to apply them.

Major Grades: Class Participation 20%

                    Essays 25%

Major works we’ll cover/Units:

Fall Semester:

The Power of Words/Language

Anthem (Identity)-Anthem Research Project

Research Unit (research skills and research paper)

The Merchant of Venice (Justice/Injustice)-writing project /argumentative letter

Film Unit- project

Spring Semester:

To Kill a Mockingbird (Culture affects how we think/feel/act in/about the world)-

Argumentative Essay

Social Commentary (Sci-Fi works)

Antigone?

**If time allows, we’ll possibly complete a poetry unit

Mature Content:

Some materials we cover in class will contain mature content and deal with real world issues. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions!

During our film unit, we will watch Psycho (1960) and Inception (Pg-13/ 2010). Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about these films.

Contracts:

Taking advanced courses will require the teacher and the student to follow the guidelines in the student contracts. Students are responsible for homework, learning, and asking for help when necessary.

I use the Remind app a lot! It allows students to ask me questions about their work and vise versa. I also upload documents for easy access. If you haven’t already, feel free to sign up on Remind!
