Classroom by Securly is a free classroom management tool to work in conjunction with Google Classroom. It allows teachers the ability to filter websites that are relevant to their class and block all others. Ultimately, this tool will help teachers keep students on track to maximize the benefits of educational technology. 

How to import classes from Google Classroom to Classroom by Securly

The first step to getting started with Classroom by Securly is to import your classes from Google Classroom to Securly and have them in sync. Every teacher with Classroom by Securly access will individually import his or her classes from their Google Classroom account to Classroom by Securly.

First Time Users:

  1. Go to https://useast2-www.securly.com/ 
  2. Click ‘Log In’, then ‘School’.
  3. Click ‘Sign in with Google’, and sign in with your school Google account.
  4. A welcome screen will appear, click the blue ‘Get Started’ button.
  5. Next, it will ask for you to import your Google Classroom. Click the blue ‘Import from Google Classroom’ button.
  6. Verify your Google account again, then click ‘Allow’.
  7. Now you should see all of your classes from Google Classroom under the ‘Classes’ tab.

Returning Users:

  1. Log into your Classroom by Securly.
  2. Click on the ‘Classes’ tab on the left hand side.
  3. Click ‘Sync with Google Classroom’ in the upper right hand corner.
  4. Verify your Google account again, then click ‘Allow’.

How to create a Permission Set and assign it to a Classroom

Teachers can control what their students access on their devices during a particular period of time. A Permission Set is a time-based filtering policy that is customized by the teacher for their classes.

Creating a Permission Set

  1. Log into your Classroom by Securly
  2. Click the ‘Permissions’ tab on the left hand side
  3. Click ‘Create Permission Set’ button
  4. Create a name for your Permission Set
  5. Select the mode for the Permission Set
  1. The Lock Down mode will block all sites for the duration of the Permission Set. You can add exceptions in the ‘Add exceptions’ field to all some sites.
  2. The Open Mode will allow all sites for the duration of the Permission Set. You can add sites to the ‘Add exceptions’ field to allow block specific sites during that period.
  1. Click ‘Create’ to save the Permission Set

Assigning a Permission to a Class

  1. Click on the ‘Classes’ tab
  2. Click ‘Add Duration and Permission Set’
  3. Select the duration from the drop-down in the ‘Set Duration’ field. While the maximum duration permitted is 8 hours it is recommended that your Permission Set duration is the same as your actual class duration in school.  
  4. Click the ‘Assign Permission Set’ field to select a Permission Set from the drop-down and assign it to your class.
  5. You can also create a new Permission Set by selecting ‘Create Permission Set’ and following the process described in the previous section.
