Definitions:
NIOSH - National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (US) - a United States federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness.
N95 mask - a particulate-filtering facepiece respirator that meets the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) N95 classification of air filtration, meaning that it filters at least 95% of airborne particles. It is required for health care workers to wear this when dealing with an airborne virus.
KN95 - a Chinese standard that is similar to the N95 requirements. Beware of counterfeits.
KF94 - A South Korean standard similar to N95. KF94 respirators are made by companies such as LG, Soomlab, Airqueen, Kleannara, Dr. Puri, Bluna and BOTN.
FFP2 - A European standard similar to N95. FFP3 is even more stringent.
P2 - Australian standard similar to N95 mask
ASTM - American Society of Testing and Materials. 3 grades of mask; not designed to filter respiratory particles, but mostly to prevent transmission from the wearer to others. Ratings mostly meant to protect wearer from fluid ‘splashes.’ For the moment, best to use ASTM level 2 or 3 masks. New guidelines for standardization are being made in the US as of Feb 7.
